Wasted Space???

ok well, this topic is already slightly covered in an existing thread -but i felt this was just too broad of a topic for an already existing one.

so disney is huge right!?! about 47 sq miles! So heres the question; if i would have been in charge of the construction of WDW from day one, i would have started building in one of the very corners of my property and then as i grew, just continue working outwads from there. [so that everything would be very close; a UO type idea, except not as closely packed together.]

however, disney's theme parks, water parks, resorts, and downtown disney are currently spread out all over the property. everythings so spread out that theres even major highways having to cut straight through it all; which can get in the way of expansion like for example look at MGM, its seemingly closed in by roads.

so my question is simply why? -was/is there a purpose to this seemingly random layout of attractions, resorts etc.?? or does it all just add up to wasted space??? ...so, feel free to explain any reasoning you may have as to why WDW is layed out the way it is or maybe you just want to tell how you would have designed disney's layout and why... :lookaroun

The best that I can guess is they wanted to leave plenty of room in between the parks for expansion and / or future resorts. One example that I can think of is the Disney Boardwalk. They nestled the entire thing in between EPCOT and MGM and now you can walk to both parks from there. If the parks were closer togetherm they would not have had room.

Other than that, I don't really have an exlpanation. Just a complete stab in the dark. :brick:

Maybe it has to do with keeping some of the natural environment intact in a few areas here and there for Mother Nature's critters to have a place to live...

Well....

One reason might be that with everything scattered about, there is a far greater opportunity for expansion to occur around MANY parcels. Ifyou built into a corner, the expansion would always be forced outward in one direction, making multiple projects difficult to organize.

Another reason sort of goes along with what RANDEB already said above....Most of Florida IS a swamp! With the properties spread out as they are, there is plenty of room to "control" the rain and waste waters and maintain some "wild" green space to keep them both from encroaching on the parks and resorts.

Either that.......or they threw darts on a map.

This might give you some insight.

First Walt has said that at least half of the WDW property would be reserved for wildlife, so that would have left you with 50% of the property in natural state. also since the very beginning WDW has had a series of Five year plans that get revised and are base on a master land use plan . there are pictures of these on the home page of the site if you look at the left tool bar under other information ald click on Master plans. http://www.wdwmagic.com/master.htm On the master plan they had indicated what would be left natural what would be a park and what would be resort as well as future roadways. there are still a few unbuilt roads to acess future areas. so there is a plan , weather we think the layout is efficent especiasly in reguards to any future Monorail expansion, if it ever happens
