Walkway to nowhere from Magic Kingdom Towards Grand Floridian - Why?

Does anyone know why there is a walkway that leads to a dead end from the Magic Kingdom. It heads towards to the Grand Floridian and can be seen from the monorail. It bugs me every time I go past that I don't know why it's there and just suddenly ends once it gets to the waters edge.

I believe it's part of the jogging trail. I am assuming to due $$$ and other ridiculous reasons that the pathway was never completed. I'm not sure though.;)

There are numerous threads on this. Search and you'll find your answers.

But to summarize, that water is the channel where the Electrical Water Pageant enters the lagoon nightly. It is also used to bring the steamer out when it needs to go for repairs, and it is used to bring supplies and work vessels to backstage at MK.

A swing bridge is not possible because the passageway would then not be wide enough. A lift bridge is impractical because of the expanse (several times wider than the one at Epcot). The ROI just isn't there, it would be very expensive. So not done for several practical reasons and won't be done. Don't need to debate this yet again.

So what was the point in building the walkway in the first place if it was impossible to build a bridge?

I think the idea of them needing somewhere to put the bricks they sold is probably correct. As for the riverboat, I don't think it ever goes through that canal. It is guided by a rail system, and probably does not even have a rudder. I think the first building you see on the canal after the railroad swing bridge is the maintenance building for the Liberty Bell. It would be a tight fit getting it down the canal past the road bridge and through the two water level gates, and then where would it go once it got in Bay Lake?

I agree with you, but there are docks and dry dock facilities I believe in bay lake, NW corner

I wish I could buy a brick!

There ya go! Ten bucks and it's yours.

By the way, I'm very aware of what bricks everyone is referring to.

I have never understood why Disney has not put a bridge across this waterway. I am a construction and maintenance engineer with a degree in Civil Engineering and this would not be hard to do. I think it would add a lot to the Grand Floridian.

I can... who is really going to use it. It's right out in the open so walking along it in the middle of the day in the summer would be asking for heat exhaustion. Maybe in the morning to get to MK it would work, but, it would, at best be a limited number of people going on it. When the parks close... wandering along the lagoon at night through and area that has Alligators, (remember them), snakes coming out to keep warm on the still warm pavement stones, other assorted nocturnal Florida wild life, not to mention feet that are already sore from walking all day in the park's. It is a pretty expensive bridge for something that will be used by only a few people, don't your think. No one is arguing that it is possible, of course it is, it's just not practical or have sufficient usage to warrant the expense.

As a former watercraft cm I can confirm that the Liberty Bell does indeed use the canal and is towed over the water bridge and to the boat maintenance facilty in the back of Bay lake where all the ferry boats and MK resort boats park. Now this is only done every few years but I did witness it whe I worked there. The storage facility you are speaking of near MK should be the parade float building behind Splash and Pirates.

And yet people use the walkway between the Boardwalk and Disney's Hollywood Studios without being constantly harassed by vermin or keeling over due to the heat.

I have stay many times at the Boardwalk Villas and people walk every day to Hollywood Studios (it is also along a waterway) and Epcot. If you read reviews of people staying there one of the things they talk about is having this option is a big plus. I have used this way to get back to the resort many times at night when people are waiting for boats at Hollywood Studios. Also the walkway from the Contemporary is crowded with people every day. I can not believe that staying at one of the flagship hotels for Disney and you can not make this short walk.

I will assume that you mean Contemporary and not Commentary and that is the opposite direction from what this discussion is about. It also contains many, many people as you said and it is a very short distance. The GF is a long way from MK even if it looks close and it is in a very isolated area between the two. There really is no comparison with that or Boardwalk. I stand by what I said. There will always be a few hearty souls that would walk it, but, not enough to justify the hundreds of thousands of dollars it would take to span the canal. To me a flagship hotel is not very impressive if walking to it is some sort of vacation highlight.

People will do anything and the distance is less. Good god, isn't there enough walking to do without having to have an other avenue that needs to be highly illuminated and patrolled? Take a freaking boat or monorail and quit constantly whining about some insignificant minor thing that will be used by very few people anyway. Get over it! It isn't there, it isn't going to be there, it never has been there, it has no need to be there no matter what they may have thought they might do 50 years ago. Even if it were there it would be clogged by scooters and strollers and that would give everyone yet another thing to whine about. It isn't needed and it isn't going to happen.

I hope I am way more positive and happy when I get to become your age. Good Lord.

And for the record, the distance from MK Security to the GF Via the walkway is less than 3/4 of a mile or roughly the same distance from DHS to Boardwalk.
