Wait times—what’s happening?

I’m 13 days out from my trip. Needless to say, I’m a bit obsessed with checking wait times.
It’s 4:47 Sunday, January 6 and most of the major rides are in triple digits. 2 hours for RnRC? 155 min

Thoughts?

Wasn't last January just as busy and it didn't let up for awhile? Seem to remember a few podcasts about it. Reduced staffing part of the reason?

Could be busy, so wait times are high. Or it’s slow, so they are reducing staff, entrances, number of ride vehicles, etc., so wait times are high.

We usually go to WDW during the slower weeks, and even when there has been a relatively empty park, wait times are high. For example, Big Thunder was a 55 minute wait on a cold rainy morning in February 2018 bc only 1 of the 2 tracks we’re operating. This occurred on several other attractions. But it was still nice to walk around in an “empty” park.

Here are a couple of pics to show how slow it was while they still had wait times pushing an hour

In 13 days it will have died down considerably. This weekend was slammed because kids are still out of school and people are still on vacation. It was a zoo Saturday night at MK. Just plan accordingly and be smart with your FP's and you will be fine.

Just as an aside, don't use last January/February as a gauge for this year. If you'll recall, a LOT of folks vacations were derailed by the big hurricanes in 2016, so they were moved to January and February 2017 and the crowds were unreal due to the extra folks showing up. Crowds are usually fairly light in January and February....

I would also submit that schools didn't return to session until today and thus people were still taking vacations. I would expect that the lines would return to normal today or tomorrow. I think that the WDW marathon is this coming weekend and that will also bump up the wait times. Check out Touring Plans and they have fairly accurate predictions for your dates.

Yep marathon this weekend. So it might stay higher than one might think until after. Disney is doing a good job of having no low times now...

We were there at Xmas time and we were fine. Just make sure you hit rope drop for the least crowded times and use your FP+s in the afternoons when the crowds are heavier. You'll be fine.

Staffing is still at peek through the marathon weekend. Its pure demand. Because of the way the holidays fell this year, most schools didn't return until today. The largest impact on the crowds comes from the locals - who didn't return to school until today - hence massive crowds. And the marathon crowds roll in this week - many of them for the entire week. Expect it to die down after the 13th.
