I love the shot :12 in. It really gives you the first clear shot of what the area will look like. I'm sure they'll add trees to block TLM from the village, but what they have so far looks amazing.

It does look a lot farther off than what it looked like in the aerials. The late October/early November makes sense now. I can't wait!!!

(The statue still looks dopey with the barrels instead of the gun though. I can only imagine that some high-up suit saw the drawing and killed the gun without even thinking twice. It's really too bad.)

I think Disney and a lot of companies operate under constant fear of someone complaining and it becoming a big news item that they are promoting violence. No doubt Disney wanted the gun removed so that the next time there's gun violence in the news, the media will not have the ability to do a story about how Disney is glorifying gun violence with this statue.

They are proactively eliminating an avenue of criticism from the malcontents who want to take swipes at Disney no matter what the company does.

It's sad that this is something they have to do to proactively defend themselves, but there it is.

I honestly think the drawing was just a drawing and the barrels were the plan from a very early stage. I mean, it makes more sense to have water coming out of barrels vs a gun....
Its not like you see them taking all the guns out of Pirates.

If you watch the vid above, you can see that the gun was actually still part of the plan when they were doing water testing for the statue. He had the gun in one hand, a barrel in the other...

They also took the gun out of the painting of Gaston for inside the "Gaston's" restaurant too.

This was some interesting editing because it was the SECOND time that painting was changed.

In the original movie, the painting in the tavern in the village is of Gaston with his hunting rifle standing on top of a giant elk that he killed. Just look at the scene for "Oh What A Guy, Gaston" and the painting is above Gaston when he's sitting in his chair.

The FIRST version of this painting drawn for FLE had gaston with his rifle but he was standing on a tree stump or something, and not on an elk. This is the painting that's in the early concept sketches of Gaston's restaurant.

But the painting that is going into FLE has Gaston with no rifle, just looking burly and manly standing there flexing his muscles. You can see the new painting in the recent video that was posted that shows the inside of the Gaston's restaurant (no gun, no elk).

So, Disney first removed the elk carcass and then later on took away the gun.

I thought the painting still had the gun?

First time poster here, but have been following the new Fantasyland news on this site religiously for over a year now.

I think you're misinformed; unless the official Disney blog in the habit of outright lying, this post from July says (and shows) otherwise:

Best,

You're "misinformed" (to use your inelegant turn of phrase).

I saw a video of the inside of Gaston's online and the painting in there didn't have the gun or the elk. It was of Gaston making a macho-man, bodybuilding pose. I saw the picture of him with the gun but no elk in the past (I noted that in my original post). But then I saw a video of the interior of Gaston's that's under construction and it had a THIRD painting (different than the movie and also different than the painting I've seen with the gun but no elk).

Couldn't there be multiple pictures of Gaston in the Tavern? One like you are describing and one like the previously posted one of him with the gun?

Really? Would love a link to that video. Please share! Regardless, I'm just going by what was clearly stated and shown on that official Disney blog. They've kept their cards close at times, but I've yet to seen an example of them lying.

I thought I had seen a video with the painting also, but I wasn't able to find it. Also, as doctornick points out, there may be more then one painting, which would be in character for Gaston.

I thought I saw a video of the painting with the gun as well, I think it might have been in the one of the imagineering videos of the tour of the whole new fantasyland, I think this was before they put up the fountain.
