Updates from Around the World

Just got back from the World, and I have a buncha updates for you!

First, we stayed at Pop Century--loved it. A little smidgen of knowledge I learned is that the reason there are 3 50s buildings has to do with the pins. Each building has 3 bowling pin stairwells for a total of 9. Then we add the pin that forms the pool here, and we have 10, the number of pins in a standard set.

Since Pop Century has been so vastly popular, Disney has decided to move construction on Legendary Years into 2nd gear and hopes to have it operational by summer 2005!

At Animal Kingdom, Everest is looking absolutely gigantic, and Disney is currently very optimistically hoping to open it in October 2005.

At MGM, I noticed a new loading spiel on the Tower of Terror, taken directly from the Tower of Terror at DCA--right before you get into your elevator. Cast Members don't quite have the system down so that guests hear the entire spiel before getting into the elevators, though.

The Stunt Show's grandstand now towers of MGM, and can easily be seen from the road. It is going to be gigantic and, in fact, an upgraded version of the Paris show. Our show will have the addition of extensive boat use, in addition to the cars. The big jumbo-tron style television is now installed, as well.

Over at Epcot, the air conditioning is not working on Test Track, which makes for some very hot rides--it was at least in the mid 80s throughout the ride building! Also, most of the on-ride computer monitors are now broken. I only saw a display on those little tvs on one ride out of maybe 7.

Soarin' is almost entirely enclosed, and from what I saw, the side facing World Showcase is sky-blue along with the roof, and the side facing out (not visible inside the park) is painted Go-Away Green.

At the Magic Kingdom, I noticed several of the seats for PhilharMagic do not have working effects, but from the seats that did have working effects--incredible show.

Wishes was absolutely amazing, but I wish there were a way to control how the fireworks explode in the sky better...quite a few of the stars come out at odd angles so people don't know what they are supposed to be, and the frown face only came out right-side up once out of my three viewings. I know it would be really hard to control this, but I hate to not hear all of the deserved oohs and aaahs b/c guests don't know what the fireworks represent.

Stitch was being very loud from behind his construction wall!

I noticed that they turned down the jets of water on Splash Mountain that used to drench guests in logs waiting to head up the 2nd lift hill--you don't get sprayed very much by them any more...and poor hopping Brer Rabbit is broken again.

I was very pleased with the new (new to me, anyway...which is all relative) signage around Blizzard Beach to direct guests to the three slide complexes...Blizzard Beach used to be really confusing, and those new signs help. The water parks just need one more thing--CLOCKS. For anyone walking around the water park without a watch on (not water resistant or they don't want to scratch their watch on the rocks) that needs to get anywhere at a set time, it's hard to keep track of what time it is. A few clocks would be very nice. That goes for all of the Parks and Resorts, too--there is a severe shortage of clocks (I know I should just wear a watch or buy one of Disney's, but it seems like it wouldn't be very hard for them to add clocks for guests as a favor, especially when trying to attend various shows). Of course, the fact that all of the Fastpass attractions have Returns clocks helps, but I still found it difficult to keep track of the time.

Overall, a great trip...absolutely beautiful weather--sunny and 90º every day! Bus service was very efficient at Pop Century, although the stations were swamped at park close--I saw 5 busloads of people leave before I got on a bus after Wishes last night haha. Cheers!

Great update thanks.

I think the idea of no clocks is the same as at the theme park in the UK that i used to work at. There were no clocks so that people stayed in the park longer and buy more stuff. For example stay a little bit longer until hungry enough to buy something! It doesn't work perfectly though because of wristwatches and the fact that shows have times!

I think getting hit by the water as you head up the second lift is a luck of the draw thing, I was on it several times a few weeks ago and most times got through dry, but once I got hit big time :D

Same for the hopping rabbit - probably worked about 25% of the time.

The last time I rode test track I noticed the monitors were not working and they said that they always go out and were slowly fasing them out. Not sure if it's true, but it's what I was told. Anybody else heard that?

I think Wishes was designed this way...so that people from other parts of the park (not on Main Street) would be able to tell that they were stars. (Don't quote me on this though).

I was there last week and I got soaked once out of three times by those water jets...so, like barnum said, I think it's a hit or miss thing. I too noticed that the little hopper wasn't hopping :(

That is very optimistic...hope it happens (which is possible because they're moving rapidly...hope they haven't missed any screws or anything)....:lookaroun

Speaking of that...I think Steve needs to invest in Mission:Screwdriver....because a lot of people here have more that a few screws loose.

Which building did you stay in at PC? Also which buildings are close to the parking lots? I will be staying at PC in 2 weeks and would like to know.

I stayed in the 50's building...it's close to the parking, it's close to all the action...

The 90's buildings are kinda far from the bus stop and food court.

Thanks for the updates. I'm going down the end of August(my third trip there in 12 months after having not been for close to 10 years). I just love going down there and someday I want to move to Orlando. Gotta get a job with one of the radio or tv stations down there first though(since that's what my training is in).

You covered about everything I was going to put into my park update, so no need to repeat it :) Great Update...couldn't have done it better myself :)

The only things that might be of interest was that the arm rests on the seats in Philharmagic have been replaced with a very light oak. The old armrests were stained a very dark color, like the back of the seats, but as some even recognized here, shortly after opening the stain on the armrests was wearing off. The new armrests don't look as nice as the old ones when they were brand new....but they do look better than the "worn" armrests and should hold up better and ultimately will go unnoticed by most.

They are repainting portions of the Contemporary Tower and the roof of its Convention Center.

When I went by Stitch on the TTA...the doors were open and resting on the floor were at least 4 large cylinder-type props that I imagine could be attached to the walls...but that's just speculation as all I could see was what appeared to be 4 cylinder props. Also, at the old entrance of the queue to AE there was a mesh of tubes, that is now gone.

On Friday night (5/21), the Astro Orbitor had no lights on its center tower. After closing that night, the lights started to come back on one at a time (as I witnessed from my room at the Contemporary) and all were working perfectly the next night.....couldn't tell you why.

The two times I went on Test Track last weekend both cars had both monitors working. I've only once ridden when the monitors didn't work...just lucky I guess. They really aren't too crucial to the ride...but they are a nice touch that I hope they keep.

Splash Mountain looks fantastic now. I've read a lot about Splash's problems recently and besides a beak on one of the birds not moving and no hopping Brer Rabbit (which you wouldn't even know about if you weren't looking for him), everything appeared to be in tip-top shape. I didn't even really notice that the water smelled funny.

Out of all the times I've seen Wishes, only once did I see the face burst in the right direction (from a Main Street point of view). There is obviously no way, at this point, to control how it will explode once it gets into the air.....but its really neat when it works right (but I'm sure from some other angle, it might look like right). Usually some of the stars always explode right though.

As an aside, I went to Star Wars Weekends for the first time ever and had an absolute blast!! From all the characters that I had never seen at the parks before, to the "celebrity" autograph sessions, to the Star Wars Millionaire and "preview" of Episode III to even watching the kids in the Jedi training camp....we spent from 9am to 4pm doing nothing but Star Wars stuff. The only ride I went on all day was, appropriately enough, Star Tours.

I stayed in 1960s A (Building 4), on the 3rd floor--great location. I didn't get the impression that any of the buildings were especially far from parking--for as many rooms as there are at Pop Century, it doesn't involve THAT much walking--nothing like Coronado Springs, for example. I was also very impressed at the transportation and overall location of the Resort. We could easily see Spaceship Earth and the Tower of Terror from our room, which meant the bus ride to MGM was a short 5 minutes, 7 minutes to Epcot and Animal Kingdom, less than 5 minutes to Downtown Disney, and Magic Kingdom was, of course, the furthest, at 12-15 minutes. You could tell Disney was really working hard to get the large crowds of Pop Century guests where they want to go, with busses sent very frequently. After Wishes on Monday night, they sent 6 busses in about 25 minutes.

As for Wishes, I know it was designed to have some effects viewable throughout the Magic Kingdom, but when the frown face is upside-down, it's not going to look right to anyone in the park who isn't standing on his or her head:animwink: It's a great show, regardless, I just hate to see them not getting props for any of their awesome show effects.

One final update--I was very pleased to see the number of foreign guests in the parks. Despite the Brazilian tour groups screaming during firework shows and budging in line (which I've come to expect), it was nice to see guests from other countries finally making their return to Walt Disney Parks and Resorts--I noticed a lot of Europeans, especially British and Irish guests, who had been staying away from the Resort for the past couple years. Welcome back! (it must be nice to take a two week holiday to Disney! Wish I could do that :) )

That's also exactly why you'll never see any clocks in a casino. Without knowledge of time it's much easier to keep people spending money for longer than they originally anticipated.

re: how to find out which bldging you'll be in

I am staying at the Pop in September. I booked the trip thru AAA and requested to be in the 60's building. I have read on other websites as well as the Birnbaum's book that you can call the resort 4-5 days before you arrive to request to be in a specific area. I have also heard that you can do this on the day you check in. My boyfriend and I went last year and stayed at the All Star Movies. We wanted a kingsize bed but had forgot to call prior to leaving. when we arrived at check in, we asked then and they were more than happy to accomodate!

Enjoy your trip!!!

September won't come fast enough!! :sohappy: :sohappy:

the '60s buildings have all preferred rooms, so if you opted to pay the extra $10 per night for these rooms, you will be in the '60s. If you paid for a standard room, you will be in the '50s, '70s, '80s, or '90s.

You can fax a room request to Pop Century for a specific building and floor. You can do that about a week before arriving.
