All of the curves that they used in the building makes it look a lot bigger than it is.

You have now entered...the Optical Illusion Zone

I was just thinking last yesterday. We were on our way to Test Track from UoE and I looked at the building as I walked past. And, as I walked I thought... "hmm... Mission: Space... Man, I can't wait for this ride to open. And look at the building. It looks so cool... kinda small, though. I remember when Horizons was here, that building was huge... now, the space looks a lot more empty than it used to. But, at least the ride should be cool..."
All of that was in my head. So, I looked at mom and said, "Remember Horizons? I miss that ride." She chuckled and we moved on.

So... uh... yeah. The building is a lot smaller.
But, seeing as there isn't an actual "ride" in the building (just simulators) it doesn't need a lot of room.

Thanks FREAK for the pic.

What we have here is a Before and After shot, made by myself, using other person's copyrighted photos. Notice that overall, in length, MS isn't much smaller than Horizons, if smaller at all. However, MS is "vertically-challenged", a short, squat building. An optical illusion making it seem SOO much smaller than Horizons.....

No Problemo!

(Now do an aerial shot...I think you'll find that Horizons was a lot "deeper" than M:S too)

Yes...

A LOT deeper...

trouble is I haven't found any satellite websites with pictures of M:S new enought to actually show the building itself... But I've seen Horizons, and it extended WAY back into the back of the park. I think Mapquest reshoots its aerial photos every year, I'll have to look out for new ones early next year 2003...

Wow. those were great pics. I'm amazed that no one has posted pics with different angles like those before.
Also, what kind of view do you get of Space when on the monorail?? Is is possible to get decent pictures from there??

Here is a pic from 2001 from the monorail.

The Horizons attraction was MASSIVE itself. It even had 2 stories and a massive tunnel walkway in case of evacuation. I believe a whole lot of it was underground and went wwwaaaaayyy far back. Mission: Space is, yes, VERY small in attraction-size. But I will have to see how it goes. I'm not going to look for thrill when I ride it, either. That's not my personal focus... :D

All these pics have been amazing. I really like the one contrasting the space then(with Horizons) and now to notice the difference in size. I do remember the Horizons going way back also. It makes me sad that it's gone, but i welcome Mission Space. I think it's going to be a revolutionary ride along with tower of terror and indiana jones. But this brings up a question.

Will it be able to live up to the hype that's been given to it? Especially from Disney fans because we are so critical of the decisions that Disney makes. I think it will, but only time will tell.

As long as the system isn't toned down below what it is, I think we'll be seeing a very innovative and thrilling attraction. Hopefully they'll work all the bottlenecks and problems out with the whole system during soft opens and CM previews. Although I wasn't happy with the removal of Horizons, M:S looks like it'll definately be a worthy replacement. (although M:S would look so much better on the terrace between the Land and Living Seas and give that area some much needed traffic)

It won't open in March ,but Mid-May for the summer season. And yes it is small becuase everything that takes place in the attraction is done inside a four seat ( simular to the Horizons four seat capsul) that can rotate 360' - with a flat digital screen .So there is no need for a large building with sets and props .

It's actually not that small...the building is about 30 feet tall, and has room for the queue, large post-show area, the pre-show, and four large centrifuges--each of which has a diameter of at least...I would guess 75 feet. Room for four people (two rows), would mean the cars have to be at least 4 feet wide, and I'll assume four feet between cars. Assume maybe 12 pods per centrifuge (which, with a 5 minute ride, roughly comes out to the predicted 1800 pph capacity). If you look at it from the side, and in person, it goes back quite far. Horizons was simply not the right shape for all four centrifuges...that, and Disney wanted to start anew with this ride, not in a "used" building...and, of course, Compaq offered to pay for it all, so who can say no?

Question about the ride itself

Hi everyone! It's my first post, I'm happy to be part of this forum! :D

I have one question (for DosgRule!): do we know by now what the ride ITSELF will lokk like? Ok, I know: blast-off, weightlessness, different endings, things to do during the flight...

So, you're in a pod; it's no coaster at all? I mean, not like Space Mountain for example...
Is there a screen in front of us to make us feel like we're in space???

I'm going to WDW for the very first time this August, i REALLY REALLY hope M:S will be open!

Thanks by advance!

Its not quite like that, but close. Each pod has a single row of seats (4 across). So the pods are pretty wide. There are a total of 10 pods per centrifuge bay. :)
