Did you purchase your room and air on the same credit card? Check with your credit card company as they may include trip insurance. Ours does (Citi). We used a third party for a past trip and it was good piece of mind. It was fairly inexpensive, but then we learned that our credit card company included trip insurance as a card perk if it was purchased on that card.

Thanks. Just called Citi and they stopped carrying trip insurance last September.

My rule of thumb is if the trip is expensive enough that I could not afford to pay for it a second time (if it got canceled), then I get the insurance (from a third party - not Disney, air line or cruise line, etc.). After that, I consider the weather season (hurricanes, winter with flight connections in snowy cities, etc.) and the risk of that type of change. Lastly, I take into consideration change fees that might be available. If those are less than the trip insurance, I might risk it.

Also, I like to book trips with a cancellation policy that is very flexible (e.g. Room only bookings at Disney).

Weve always added it in with our trip budgets. We thankfully have never had to use it but its worth the minor amount of money to do it. I have had customers who have been fortunate to have had it in place when they needed it. In this life there are so many unplanned things that can all of a sudden affect your plans at the last minute. I am an optimist but it pays to be prepared.
