Trading Pin Question

Okay, I finally gave in and got my first three pins this past weekend.
1. A Marathon pin - because I ran in it this year
2. A Behind the Magic Pin - which I received for going on the Behind the Magic Tour (and will never give up!)
3. A Piece of Disney History Pin - Because I used to love 20,000 LUTS.

Just wondering what these might be worth someday? They all have personal meaning to me and I will never part with them. Just wanted to know how the value of a pin will go up or down. I have been fighting the urge to buy pins up until this point, because I knew that once I got started, I wouldn't be able to stop. Any pointers or advise on pins would be appreciated.

I never wanted to start either, but I gave in last month and bought my first pin (20,000 leagues) and then bought 3 more on my trip. I don't plan to trade any either. I just like having collections of things. Now I need to figure out how to get the other 11 piece of history pins!

So true! I've gotten some beautiful retired pins there that were needed to finish a collection.

You never know what a pin will bring when being sold... it all depends on too many things. There are wonderful sites out there dedicated to pin trading. A quick Google search should get you on your way.

There is a good book out called Tomart's Disneyana guide to pin trading. it lists over 14000 pins all with photos and a grading system as to the value of a pin. I purchased mine at wdw. Cant remember the name of the store. but it was on mainstreet right across from the emporium. You could try wdw mail order to see if you could purchase a copy.

Tomarts guides is a good reference, but i find their catologing and numbering system to be confusing and it is time consuming to look for a pin based soley on picture. they need a cross reference of some sort.

for pin traiding websites, id suggest http://pinpics.com/ which aslo has pics of all the pins but has a search feature and you can trade pins there too.

http://dizpins.com/ is prolly the best for info about new pins, pin agtherings and stuff like that.

the official disney site at http://eventservices.disney.go.com/pintrading/index is getting better, but still needs work. it has some good infor, but the pin database and search feature are just terrible to use.

Sorry for bringing up on old thread, but its better that starting a new one!!! Does anyone know if the Test Track Piece of Magic pin was released today or not? Also are those pins available in the DTD area or just in the parks only? Thanks in advance.

I always say, never collect anything because you think it will go up in value. Collect what you love. :)

As for pins....boy those little things do tend to multiply! I don't even want to know what I have spent on them in the past year..... The kids really enjoy the trading aspect of the collecting, and I always pick up some bargain pins from Ebay for them to use as traders. I wish I could predict which ones would go up in value.... I'd stock up!

GoofyMom2 is absolutely correct. Do it because you love it or enjoy it. Don't do it because you think it might go up in value.

Another hint is to try to pick a certain theme and collect those. If not, you end up buying almost everything in sight and it will drive you nuts. Pick a theme, such as you collect Donald Pins, and stick with that. Or you like Magic Kingdom parks and collect all those. This will make it a lot more fun, especially if you're into pin trading.

The Disney Pin Trading website is best for scouting around what pins will be released, and especially on Surprise Pins, because they'll tell you exactly where to find those. Such pins are usually released only at one particular location at a particular park (such as a push cart right in front of the American pavillion at Epcot, for example), and they are not announced till the day they are released.

Also check out the Disney Pin Trading site for the etiquette in doing pin trading. This is an enjoyable experience, especially for the younger ones since some of them are more interested in the trading itself than the pins they get (I got some really rare pins that some kid wanted to trade away for some generic pins you can get anywhere - I did ask her parents if it was OK and they said she's having fun just trading). It's even more fun to keep an eye on the pins the cast members are wearing. You just never know if they're wearing cast member pins, or some rare pins someone else traded with them.

But most importantly, know your limits. It can be an addiction like any other. If you are aware of this, pin collection can be a lot of fun.

Zz.
