TEAM SPACE PRESENTS...
(drumroll please)

View attachment 542740

Alright, alright, alright.

First off, I'd like to introduce myself, because there are quite a few faces on here whom I've never met.

My name is MANEATINGWREATH (MEW), and I've been an armchair Imagineer for thirteen years this April. I started with people like @TheOriginalTiki, @monkey92514, and @JokersWild back on a little purple website called Visions Fantastic. I consider myself responsible for creating the term "Open Brainstorming," and consider myself even more responsible for starting more than a handful of dream resort projects on WDWMagic that have never (and probably never will be) been finished. They're pretty cool though, so check 'em out if you'd like.

For over a decade, armchair Imagineering has been a wonderful escape for me and a great way to blow off creative steam. While I have since "retired" and relocated that energy into my Halloween village and LEGO sets, it's always nice to pop in from time to time and see how the current generation of armchair Imagineers are doing. I couldn't be happier to see contests such as SA and SYWTBAI doing better than ever. I was a SYWTBAI co-host for several of its earlier seasons, including Seasons Six, Seven, Eight, and beyond, and the memories from them will last a lifetime.

I took it upon myself to come into my critique of Team Space's project completely blind. I purposely didn't read the prompt (until tonight), and have not checked the work thread at all. I wanted the experience of reading their project to be as if I was experiencing this fictional EPCOT Pavilion as a guest for the first time. Since it seems there is no standard rubric or grading for this particular contest, I'm just going to leave a few italicized bullet points with my feedback. Enjoy!

- Wow! Project presentations have really come a long way since the early days of SYWTBAI. I'm really impressed with how well formatted and eye-pleasing the "website" is. And the fact that you used Spotify for your BGM was a nice touch. Call me an "Okay Boomer," but this would have received audible ooo's and ahhh's back in my day, with high marks for presentation.

- Love the name "The World Above." Very old school Future World.

- Opening Day: First off, great detail of squeezing "The World Above" into an actual EPCOT map of the time period. Felt like something you'd see on Widen Your World when doing some research. I think what I would have liked to have seen more of in this section was a dedicated history to the design and conception of the Pavilion. Not sure if any of you are familiar with MartinsVids on YouTube, but he does a great job creating video essays that capture the nostalgia of old school WDW, especially Future World pavilions, often providing background to the subject of the video. I think that could have benefited this particular section of the project. I would have loved to have known why the pavilion was created, why it was selected, how did it factor into Horizons with Horizons of course being a snapshot of all Future World's themes in one attraction. Details like that would have made the geek in me...geek out.

Whoever wrote the "Wonderful, Wonderful Weather" song is quite the talented person! Sounded very Sherman Bros.-esque and something I could listen to when walking through Epcot's turnstiles. Likewise, thank you for clarifying If You Had Wings was closed down in this timeline. I love alternate history projects like this, so this hits the right marks for me.

Nice touch having "The Mouse" inside the pavilion.

- 1990s: The 1990s seemed a bit incomplete IMO. There was a lot of thought put into Opening Day, but it seemed the updates from the '90s left more to be desired. And that's not to say what was incorporated in this section was bad, it was good content. I just wish there was more of it. Knowing this was the early era of Eisner and Wells, wouldn't we have seen a thrill ride shoehorned into the pavilion by the late 90s? Or, what if The World Above had plans for a "Disney Decade" expansion that never happened due to the failure of Euro Disney? The '90s were such an odd time for the Disney Parks, especially Epcot, and I think more could have been done here.

- 2000s: Ahhh, that's more like it. The Forecast Follies 2.0 backstory is exactly what I was looking for in the '90s section and in the Opening Day section in regard to "background." The updated Follies is so delightfully cringe that I couldn't imagine it lasting more than a year in operation. A true spiritual successor to Superstar Limo. Thank you for this. Eisner is easily to blame.

Soarin' makes much more sense in The World Above than in The Land, and THANK YOU for doing Soarin' Over America rather than a carbon clone of Soarin' Over California. I'm really not sure why this wasn't done IRL.

The Planes redo of The Mouse is again, so delightfully cringe, and so delightfully Iger. Very accurate and thoughtful work all around in this section.

- 2020s: Boy, that attraction poster is great. You have some really talented artists on this team. I love the design of the pavilion, and the pavilion being squeezed into existing park maps is, again, just great. And the pavilion logo. But hmm... I don't know if The Rocketeer would have been my choice for the 2020s expansion. Were it me, I would have gone with Iron-Man for my IP selection, or even Captain Nemo from the Jules Verne-verse. But I digress. I'm one of those people who has never seen The Rocketeer so I probably don't have much room to talk here. The attraction overall is very well done and I can tell the amount of work that was put into this, so congrats on that. I just don't know if I'm feeling that particular IP in Future World... Though the same could be said for GOTG, and look where we're at with that. Please know I'm just providing personal feedback here and not hate. I'm probably in the minority here anyway haha.

- Overall, you guys did a great job! This project was just the right length to be enjoyable and high quality all around. Were I to give this a grade with a classic SYWTBAI rubric, I would give it an 8.5 out of 10. Great work!

Everyone did an incredible job with these Stanza XII projects and as @Tegan pilots a chicken said - 12 Stanzas 36 projects, still going strong!

With Stanza XIII being the last of the regular season - I would like to reveal the schedule of events for the upcoming week so everyone is aware in advance.

On the evening of Wednesday March 31st EST - The 'Haunted' Boardroom thread will be launched, and will stay open until Sunday April 4th around noontime. This will give everyone more time over the Easter/Passover weekend to write the Boardroom response, but also in general an extra few days so people can fine tune their reply if they prefer. For a more detailed Q/A about the Boardroom process, I relinked my March 15th post here that explains how the process will work.

After the final Stanza reviews and results - we will have an awards ceremony on Saturday April 3rd, to commemorate all the hard work by everyone over the course of these dozen plus Stanzas. In addition there will be the launch of new games (a new One Sentence Competition and Jeopardy), plus some fun other events as well before the playoff roster is decided ultimately on Sunday April 4th.

This has become such a community event and something truly special. You all are to thank for that!

The sole reason we didnt use Marvel is because a lot if the properties that best fit flight are in use (at least minimally) at Universal thus leaving us not able to use them. If it wasn’t for that we likely wouldve seen the Falcon or Iron Man represented over the Rocketeer. Rocketeer was chosen due due to Disney revitalizing the franchise with the Disney Junior show currently airing and a sequel currently in the works making it a franchise that’s seeing a resurgence

Overall
I really like the concept here! A sort of reverse Land that starts on the bottom and moves up rather than starts at the top and moves down. It's a clever bit of design and it really shows faithfulness to that clever original Epcot Pavilion design. Team Space doing sky was a bit on the nose but I'm not holding it against you.

1980s
I come from a family of aviation nuts so there were some touches like the inclusion of The Mouse that will not go unnoticed and unappreciated. It's small but I think it's a great tone-setter for the original version. Similarly, The Sky Was the Limit would be something I would love to walk through and spend some time in just to look at all the artifacts. I like the presentation of the pure facts at first to give guests the foundation to fully enjoy the Pavilion proper. Take Flight is a cool little dark ride that rounds out the experience well and fits the idea of a Boeing-sponsored pavilion remarkably well. This leads me to what I would probably call both the strongest and weakest part of this section: Forecast Follies. With the rest of The World Above so focused on aviation, Forecast Follies, good as it is (and it is GOOD) doesn't really fit all that well with the rest of the material in the pavilion. It'd be like if The Land was totally focused on Geology except for Kitchen Cabaret. The Epcot Center Fanpeeps will harp on and on and on about the thematic throughlines of all the pavilions so this feels a bit glaring the more I think about it. To end this little critique sandwich, the Ludwig Von Drake addition in the 90s is great and I can see it really keeping the good professor relevant for fans.

2000s
This section fully goes for the meme and you know what? I'm not mad. Forecast Follies 2.0 is one of the most cursed things I have ever seen in a comp. Defacing The Mouse like that is disgusting. Soarin' was an obvious addition but I'm giving brownie points for developing an entirely new film with Soarin' Across America.

2020s
That poster is beautiful and I love the fact you were willing to go a bit further into the future for this segment. The Rocketeer is one of my favorite cult classics. It's a movie that knows what it is and as a result, is such a fun and enjoyable watch. I really think you got that across here. The Kuka Arm was a brilliant choice for a ride system and I think the story you developed really emphasized the pulpy fun that is The Rocketeer.

Overall, really good job team!

Of course I get saddled with the team who does almost twice as much brainstorming as far as page count is concerned as the other two :p In all seriousness though, this was my first time really actively following a brainstorming thread from beginning to end this season, and I must say the amount of team work and talent on display here is a force to be reckoned with. I really admired how the final theme you came up with was a mix of some of your best ideas blended together in a natural way. One of the biggest challenges with these games is knowing when and when not to hold on to pet concepts, and the balance was struck here very well.

The pavilion itself is definitely classic Epcot. While I was a bit concerned that geology would be similar to "The Land" since they're both about Earth at their core, but this definitely offered a unique perspective and as much as I like The Seas the scale of this would have been much more impactful and I think having a mirror image to some of the themes explored in The Land was an inspired choice. I absolutely loved the concept of The Rock Works and how it ties the layout together. Top to bottom this thing gave me vibes of one of my all time favorite dark rides, the Calico Mine Ride at Knott's. The Rock Works feels like walking into the Glory Hole set piece of that attraction, and Beneath Our Feet basically feels like the mine ride on steroids with a bit of Journey to the Center of the Earth thrown in for good measure. I'm also glad to see one of my favorite Sonic the Hedgehog knock-offs getting some time in the sun ;)

Seriously though, the educational film was really well done and felt very classic Epcot. Also had a True Life Adventures vibe to me. The different eras were handled very well. That Disney Adventures cover made me really crave a whole project in that style and got me super nostalgic. You did a great job keeping the same spirit of the original attractions while still maintaining some minor bits of corporate cynicism like the realistic detail of Sonic the Hedgehog overtaking the edu-tainment film. I also really enjoyed the new characters made for the pavilion. They genuinely felt like something straight out of the Dino Institute so once again fits that 90's era "dad trying to be hip and cool" energy to a T. Storm Rescue seems like a really solid coaster and definitely felt in the mold of the innovative thrill machines like the twin Sunset Boulevard E-Tickets Disney were designing at the time. My only minor nitpick is the theme feels very similar to Storm Chasers in Tokyo, but it's still really well executed and definitely feels like the same sort of shot in the arm to the pavilion that Soarin' was for The Land.

All in all I find very little to nitpick with this one. The team had a steady work ethic from top to bottom and it was really great to see each individual member getting so much support and all the ideas getting respect and consideration. Definitely a great start to the SYWTBAI phase of the season. I'll end on a silly sidenote: Has anyone actually read the comments on that Budweiser Zero video? All I can say is MY GOD does that product have some hardcore fans :hilarious: :hilarious: :hilarious:

It's just all of @PerGron's alts. He alone keeps the brand alive.

Reviews are coming, and ooh boy are they way too long because I am physically incapable of writing concisely.
