I have heard a little about the story behind the ride but was wondering if someone can give me a more detailed description. I have also heard about rings in the sidewalk but haven't been able to locate them. a new tombstone has gone up outside of the ride that goes along with the story, and I'd like to know a little bit more about it. Thanks.

very simple story...it's a retirement home for ghosts! However, given the lack of much of a story, Cast Members have created a story for each of the 999 ghosts...very fun!

I remember the guides tell me the backstory for HM on both my Keys to the Kingdom tours. Of course, I can't remember now. :snore:

I believe that it has something to do with a haunted house with 999 ghosts and they're looking for one more. You're in the house for some reason wandering around. You get up to the attic and you see some ghostly bride. She scares you so much, you fall out of the window and fall (when the doombuggy turns around) down to the ground and die. Then you can see all the ghosts in their "normal" form.....

I'm sure I've got parts wrong (too tired), but I think that's the gist of it. Others who know better, please correct me.

I was told it was simply a retirement home for ghosts. It originally had a very convoluted story, but it kinda disappeared as they developed the ride...Phantom Manor, however, has a VERY developed story about the master of the house murdering his wife...

I'll see what I can piece together from my memory of my MK tour on my first official day as a Cast Member.

The story was something about Master Gracey being a ship captain. His bride locked herself in a trunk in the attic to play a game on him because she wanted to surprise him. He got home and Leota, who was secretly in love with him, told him his wife had died. He then hung himself, as you see in the stretch room. Well, his wife finally got out of the trunk and found his body. She freaked out and jumped out the attic window. This is why your car turns backwards here. You are supposed to falling out the window like her. When she landed she hit the ground so hard that her ring embedded in the walk way. Ever since then ghosts have taken over the Mansion and Leota has tried to calm all the uneasy spirits, but it isn't really working. All they want to do is have fun.

That is the basic story we were told at work. They don't really share it because it is kind of involved and would take too long to explain to the guests. I may have messed some parts up, but you get the general idea.

The ring thing is actually where a pole stood at one time. When it was removed it left a ring like impression on the ground. The mansion cast members just made up a story about it like they did for all the ghosts in the mansion. It is kind of hard to find, but if you walk around the front queue area you can find it.

Also, doombuggies.com does have awesome Haunted Mansion info and you can also find links to sites that tell the stories the cast members have made up for the ghosts inside.

Well, that's really all I can remember! Have fun!

That is the explaination which desribes it easiest. I've never heard it put like that before though. And doombuggies is good.

but the scream is...okay...I'll go with it...

Was that in response to me?
If so, I do distinctly remeber the narrator saying, when he is talking about no windows or doors, something about there being "my way" to get out, and then the room goes dark and he is hanging above you.

Well, maybe you guys are right. But I do remember reading on the Net and hearing on my first CM day that Master Grace had this mansion where he had many guests that included his family, his bride, her family, and travelers that asked for a place to spend the night (hence the 999 ghosts, or atleast the most prominent ones in the ride). Leota was a fortune teller that he took in, and she was in love with him. If memory serves me, she told the bride to hide in the trunk to surprise him, and she was in her wedding dress. Then Leota told him that she had died or ran away (don't remember). He does kill himself, and then she finds out and kills herself too. Now, I do remember somebody hanging him or herself, somebody falling from the window and there was something about the bride dying in the trunk. Anyways, the carriage outside the Manor is the one that was to take the bride's body, in the casket, to be buried. Leota spooked the horses (or something like that) and they ran off. The ring fell from the caske and the horses ran over it, that's how it got embedded in the ground. Later, they found the carriage, but no horses and no casket and body.

I'll check doombuggy.com, maybe they have this story I'm trying to tell.

The original idea behind the mansion was to have a walk-through attraction and not a ride. The story is losely based on the black and white animated Disney short "Lonesome Ghosts".

The storyline pretty much was overlooked by the imagineers working on the attraction. Walt Disney wanted them to create lots of special effects, and they did. They also abandoned the original concept of a "museum of the weired" at the end of the attraction.

The stretchrooms were created as a diversion to get the guests under the railroad tracks at Disneyland and into the show building. They repeated this effect at WDW but an elevator was not needed so the walls in the stretchrooms just go up.

One of the most overlooked features in the mansion is the Raven. (hence my user name!) It is from the original storyline and it's actually in several places but is hard to spot. The bride was also a staple feature, but the plot line for these characters have vanished with the progression of the ride.

As for the ring in the pavement, yes it is just a pole from a gate that was cut off and the CMs made a story about it. You can see it under the final brick archway just before you re-enter the courtyard where the hearse is. At the end of the canopy, the archway is split in 2 sections but it's in right under the right one. It's really small. More like a ring for a doll or a baby.

For an inside look at the WDW mansion and it's secrets, visit my HM page on my website!

the hanging corpse is indeed supposed to be master gracey. he supposedly committed suicide, for reasons explained thoroughly on www.doombuggies.com. he also is the narrator......just go to that site. it tells the real stories from guys who know, and from some of the creators of the ride....

I think it is cool that the story (or stories) about the house is not actually told to you but instead has to be heard and found out from others. Sort of like a real haunted house where different people tell you different legends about it.

Raven - Lonesome Ghosts is my favorite Mickey Mouse cartoon. It always makes me think of the Haunted Mansion. BTW, it is in color not black and white.

I guess he was talking about an older one, in B&W, that has ghosts dancing and stuff... If I'm thinking about the right one, it was featured in Look Who's Talking.

Now, cruising through Doombuggies.com, they mention at some point that the ride was originally supposed to be themed after The Adventures os Ichabod Crane. That would've been something, huh?

And I found out the site where I originally hear all the stories about the Mansion.
Here: http://members.aol.com/HtdMsn/gallery.html

It's full of CM stories about all 999 ghosts.
