The Disney Channel

In 1983, a new type of TV channel went on the air. This new type of channel was called a "family channel." The name of the channel was The Disney Channel. It targeted families with such programming as Good Morning Mickey, Dumbo's Circus, and Welcome to Pooh Corner. In 2002, the channel took an unexpected turn with the debut of Lizzie McGuire. Since then, the channel has been targeted to preteen girls with such programming as Hannah Montana, JONAS, and Sonny With a Chance. This is not the type of programming that was envisioned for the channel in 1983. It is certainly NOT the type of programming that would have been approved by Walt Disney: the man who started the magic. My main point here is that The Disney Channel should go back to being the family channel that it once was. As Roy Disney said, "...a magic kingdom where the young at heart of all ages can laugh, play, and learn together," about Walt Disney World in Florida, The Disney Channel should be "a family channel where the young at heart of all ages can laugh, play, and learn together."

The trouble is, the way the American family uses television has changed dramatically since the early '80s. Nearly any family that can afford cable television is going to have multiple televisions in the house, so there's no real need to program in such a way that the whole family has to like what they're watching.
