Trip Report That time I bought a WDW AP even though I live 8091 miles from the parks (completed)!

Hi all, I’m a couple of weeks back from a trip where I spent a few days in Disneyland and Las Vegas followed by two weeks in WDW. I took good trip notes for the first few days but by the time I arrived at WDW I had stopped and so will have to rely on photos to remind me of what I did when, allowing for some discrepancies as my phone and camera seem to exist in different time zones.

Who – Renee from Auckland, New Zealand which Dr Google tells me is 8091 miles away from Orlando.

When – 21st of November until 11th of December.

Where – Park Vue Inn at Disneyland, The Venetian in Las Vegas and Pop Century, French Quarter and the Animal Kingdom Lodge at WDW.

Why – Because I wanted to, what other reason is needed!!

I was more stressed about this holiday than I normally am. I had surgery in July with 6 weeks off work, closely followed by an awful stomach bug and then a cold which hung around for two months and which I only recovered from a week before I left. All this meant that I hadn’t slept well in months, was very stressed and had been especially inactive so was worried about how I would cope with three weeks of solid walking. I was also worried I would get another cold which I often do when I travel. So, will this trip report consist of photos of me sitting in my hotel room nursing sore feet and coughing up phlegm or photos of fun theme park activities? You will have to come along for the ride to find out!!

Here is a photo of the Annual Pass from the title. I realise in this Instagram age that I should have taken a photo of this in front of some iconic structure like Cinderella Castle or Spaceship Earth and not in front of the curtains in the Pop Century value resort but I am still learning!

Travel
I had the day of my flight off work which was gave me a chance to sleep in and pack at a relaxed pace. I wanted to leave plenty of room for the new Starbucks mugs from each of the parks as well as some Christmas ornaments but I also didn’t want to do any washing while I was away. I hoped I had achieved the perfect balance of packing everything I own while leaving lots of room for souvenirs.

I spent as much of the day as I could playing with my lovely little dog Sookie who had known something was up ever since I dragged the suitcases out. This is a picture of my favourite dog on my favourite friend’s lap!
_DSC7354.JPG

As usual I would miss her a lot and was reminded of her every time I saw a “service dog” in the park.

The first Uber I ordered to take me to the airport arrived after only a couple of minutes but parked himself in the middle of the road outside my house and yelled out that he can’t take me to the airport as he’s been banned from there. Umm, maybe don’t accept my ride then and also don’t park in the middle of the street to yell at me so that cars have to swerve around you, honking their horns and giving me the evil eye out their car window as though it was my fault. The next driver got me to the airport OK but was kind of creepy and persistently asked questions like will your husband miss you, where is your husband, are you married, so your boyfriend will miss you then wont he, who are you travelling with etc etc. Thankfully the drive is not that long but thanks for the weird trip to the airport Uber drivers of Auckland.

I relaxed before the flight with some chips and rose, the start of three solid weeks of poor dietary choices!

My father is retired airline staff and I was flying on his staff benefits. I had applied and paid for an upgrade to business class but had to wait until I got to the gate to see if I was upgraded or not. I had all my legs and fingers crossed as there is nothing better than a lie-flat seat on a long-haul overnight flight. Sadly, business class was full but I did get a seat in an almost empty premium economy cabin. This is very comfortable relative to economy and which also meant I would get back most of the money I had paid. My row was empty but because the armrests were fixed I couldn’t utilise the space and lie down.
UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_30f5.jpg

My appetiser and dessert. The main course was delivered a little while later. (In NZ we call what you call appetizers entrees and what you call entrees are called mains and what you call desserts we call desserts!)
IMG_6424.JPG

It was a pretty good flight, lots of leg-room, comfortable seat, great service and food but as per usual I only got at most an hour or two of sleep.

Once at LAX I got through security and picked up my bags quickly and with no issues. I caught the Disneyland Express and headed to the Park Vue Inn. I really hoped they would have an early room for me as I wanted to shower and lay down for a while but they didn’t so I had to freshen up and change in the lobby bathroom and then headed to Disneyland.

It was beautiful, I was blessed with great weather for most of my trip, it was sunny and hot without being too hot. Then at the end there were a couple of days that were so cold I could hardly believe I was in the same place!

Your trip sounds great, Canada and WDW sounds like a great combo. Spoiler alert, I wasn't that impressed by AKL. I was conscious while I was there that my room was no bigger or better than my moderate room but I was paying US$200 more a night for it. I might have felt differently if I had a savannah view though, and most people seem to really like it. There were also a lot of activities in the resort like drum circles and crafts etc that little kids were enjoying. I booked my rooms through an American agency called magical vacations. They had good discounts and were easy to deal with.
Yes I agree
Going to WDW and going to Canada ( or living in Canada!) is an amazing combination;);););)

Our plan is for the savannah view and at the moment we are looking at renting DVC points for that part of our stay unless we can get a good deal but I doubt it since we are going to be there in July and it’s super busy then. We are really going just for the animals out the room window.

My plan was to do it all online through the Disney website because we did that last time and it worked out ok for us then (we got free dining last time so that helped but this time I’m expecting it to cost a lot more).

Seeing the animals from your own balcony would definitely be worth it!

Donald Duck was having a meet and greet. I regret not waiting for him as he looks so cute in his OG sailor suit.

I know its February and people are probably over Christmas decorations but the retro decorations at Hollywood Studios were my favourite from any of the parks.

This was so cute!

I love how the buildings have so much authentic detail. I’ve seen an Adam the Woo vlog where he walks though Hollywood finding the actual buildings that the studios buildings are modelled on, and they look just the same (but cleaner). This is my favourite as I love the blue tiles and the silver accents.

My first fastpass was for the Tower of Terror. Despite enjoying the Guardians overlay in DCA I’m glad this version was spared as it would have been a travesty to overlay this much more beautifully themed version. It seemed much tamer in comparison though!

While I waited for my next fastpass I had a drink and some nuts at the baseline taphouse. The nuts were so plentiful I had to get them packed up to take away with me. The beer was citrus flavoured and very refreshing

Next up was the Indiana Jones show which I enjoyed. I was pleased with myself for being able to pick who the stooge was from amongst the volunteers.

After this I headed into Mama Melrose for my highly anticipated steak and risotto. Sadly it had been removed from the menu and I had to settle for steak and fingerling potatoes. The potatoes were quite plain.

IMG_0243 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I can’t remember what these desserts were but they were just OK and didn’t blow me away at all. I spilt some sauce on my t-shirt and when the waitress saw me dabbing my top with some water and a tissue she went off and got me seltzer water and thick tissues to clean up with. She was lovely but overall I found Mama Melrose quite average and am not in a hurry to eat there again.

After lunch I skipped my Star Tours fastpass. I made a few fastpasses for this ride at Disneyland and here but never ended up riding. Whenever it is time to do it I always worry about getting nauseous and don’t end up riding. I headed out the park and after I hung out at the resort for a while I headed to Disney Springs. I was in a much better mood to deal with crowds and shopping and I bought a few t-shirts from Uniqlo and a bag from Kipling.

A random photo from the exit of Hollywood studios.

I agree with your GOG and TOT position
I am happy with the change at only one of the two US parks
GOG was fun and different and I am looking forward to returning to WDW to ride the worlds best tower ride again

After this I headed towards the buses to head to my new resort.

IMG_0153 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

The CM checking me in talked to me for a while about a holiday he took to NZ when he was younger. Turns out he had been to a park very close to my house. We also sorted out my no housekeeping certificate. I loved getting money for opting out of housekeeping, I prefer to do this anyway and getting paid for it was a double bonus.

The room seemed a bit dingy and old: the furniture was a bit beat up, the carpet was worn, there were no USB ports, the bed was uncomfortable and there was constant noise from the air conditioner unit on the roof of the building. It was a step down from the
pop century room so you might think that I would be disappointed in French Quarter, but you would be wrong. The resort was beautiful, charming and peaceful and I loved it. I can’t wait to stay there again.

IMG_0154 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

My favourite thing about the room was this picture.

IMG_0155 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I didn’t take any photos but I took a boat to Disney Springs, however as soon as I got there I realised I was too exhausted to deal with the crowds and walking around so I just got on another boat and headed back to the hotel. I did pick up a couple of treats at Amorettes though which I ate over the next couple of days.

What was the pastry pictured above the strawberries? It looks like a Key Lime tart, maybe? I keep meaning to try Amorette's and I never seem to get around to it.

I think it was a key lime tart though I'm not 100% sure. it was delicious though and much better than the strawberries which were a bit watery and flavourless (chocolate was good though).

You have a great eye for photography!

Sorry about your room at PORS, but I agree regarding the beauty of the resort.
The rooms are getting a renovation this year with hard floors, new mattresses, fresh paint etc so some of my issues are getting fixed.

Saturday 2nd of December
Today I headed to Animal Kingdom the highlight being my Flight of Passage fastpass. I started the day with Kilamanjaro Safaris.

IMG_0251 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

It was awesome to see the hippos out of the water and luxuriating in the sunshine. I love their pink skin.

IMG_0259 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I took a kajillion more safari photos but given that this is a 2 week trip I am trying to be discerning.

I walked around looking at the animals for a while after the safari. Apparently, these fish keep the hippo tank clean by eating dead skin and poop. There is your gross factoid of the day!.

I took some more photos of Pandora as I just can’t get enough.

Verdict on the ride: Fabulous, exciting and nausea inducing. The last third of the ride I felt myself feeling ever more off. I still feel as though I would do the ride again as I didn’t actually get sick and it was a stunning experience.

I looked around for a while longer and had lunch in Satuli Canteen. There is so much detail in Pandora, even in the small things such as this seed pod.

I love these creatures, I wish there was more animal life in the land as well as the awesome plant life.

For lunch I had the beef bowl with sweet potato and blueberry cheesecake. Both were amazing.

There were some lovely birds on the way to the exit.

This is a baribusa. It was asleep against the wall of its enclosure.

So do you think if is better than the Tokyo version then?

Before the Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout Changeover:

1) Florida - Original - with the 5th dimension - and multiple drop patterns
2) Tokyo - Ride is really tame - but the building and story line are top notch
3) California - Only one sequence but at least the old Hollywood theme from DCA2.0 matched the Hotel
4) Paris - Same ride as Cali just stuck in the middle of a Studios park that is sub par theme wise.

After GOG - I basically take Cali out of the equation because the ride is so different - It is no longer scary - it is a party atmosphere - great music and good visual effects and jokes

So the TOT rating for me is
1) Florida
2) Tokyo
3) Paris

As always I welcome both complimentary and opposing view points!!

Thank you for the great analysis. There aren't many people who have ridden all the options so good to have your opinion. For me, although I love the extra excitement of Guardians I will always prefer good theming over thrills so I prefer the TOT over Guardians.

After resting at the hotel for a while I headed to the Magic Kingdom.

IMG_0385 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I tried being artsy with the toy soldier.

IMG_0389 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I love the neon and energy of the Magic Kingdoms Tomorrowland at night. I enjoy hanging out there whereas at Disneyland I rarely ever go to Tomorrowland. (PS: look at all those people, if early December is a quiet time, I would hate to see a busy time!).

IMG_0400 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I rode the Carousel of Progress and the Peoplemover and then headed to dinner in Adventureland. This was my first meal in Skippers Canteen and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. I had the dumplings and the pork and both nice but not outstanding. I would have liked to try a dessert but I was absolutely stuffed. I lingered over dinner for as long as I could as I was hoping the park would empty out a bit after the fireworks (the place was winding down and there were plenty of tables so I wasn't taking anyones spot).

IMG_0426 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

The guy in this painting also looks like Joe Rohde (Is there a medical condition where everything you see looks like Joe Rohde?).

IMG_0427 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

The pathways were indeed much clearer when I exited the restaurant and it was nice and cool. I checked out the Tiki room.

IMG_0439 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

In Fantasyland I rode Peter Pan. The ride stopped for a while allowing me to attempt a photo.

I have never actually done this attraction, is it worth doing for an adult?

IMG_0446 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I rode the Little Mermaid.

IMG_0447 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I headed into the circus themed area which was almost deserted.

IMG_0451 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

This train is in very poor condition but looks nice from a distance.

IMG_0453 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

There was no wait for Dumbo so I took a spin. This kiddy ride is surprisingly scary as I always feel as though I am going to slide on out of my elephant.

IMG_0463 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I also rode the barnstormer with no wait (fun but short) and then headed to Tomorrowland again for another ride on the Peoplemover.

IMG_0470 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

Once the park closed I spent quite a lot of time in the hub and the Main Street shops. I have no idea why Mickey and Walt are such different colours in the photo?

IMG_0480 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I really enjoyed my night time visit this time. It seemed much quieter than the EMH evening and it was good to be able to make fastpasses which you can’t during EMH. When I headed for the buses I saw one waiting so had to run for it. When I hopped on the driver said my running was worth it as he was about to take off when he saw me.

This is a random shot of a backpack I bought at Disney Springs on one of my previous days along with a lot of post cards, a note book and some coasters. I was making good use of my AP discount! As well as being very cute it has a great velvety soft pocket for your phone as well as side pockets for drinks etc

Nah probably not. I think it’s cool just to see what it is if you have nothing else to do, but if I was there without kids it would be last on my list. Maybe only above tea cups and dumbo and that’s just because I would get sick on those for sure. It is also very time consuming.

Sunday the 3rd of December
I started my day with pumpkin spice beignets. They were delicious. You can see the fork marks from where I went to pick the thing up and put it in my mouth and then decided that I should take a photo of it first.

I was very fond of these bead lights in the food court.

KdZIZWzKQLi7mjP06ROl2Q_thumb_2cd6.jpg

I headed to the Magic Kingdom today but didn’t take many photos. I was feeling very disgruntled with the camera that I bought for my trip. I was tired of holding it and because it was small I kept bumping buttons, knobs and the screen and changing settings.

I was walking past the castle when the fireworks from the little show in front of the castle went off so it looks as though the spires are in the clouds.

I had lunch at BOG in the main ballroom.

IMG_6624.jpg

I had a ham and cheese sandwich and French onion soup. The soup was cheesy, flavourful and delicious but the sandwich and fries were cold. The room was loud and crowded and I didn’t enjoy my BOG experience at all, in fact I cancelled the dinner reservation I had for later in the week.

I rode Mine train for the first time this trip and I love this ride. I hear a lot of complaints here about it but I think it’s a wonderful ride I wish I could get on more often. I also rode Splash Mountain which was looking beautiful and is one of the rides that is so much better here than in Disneyland.

I watched the Festival of Fantasy parade from Fronteirland again. I got another good, seated position with little wait on what was a busy day.

This is a great show and to repeat my earlier complaints there is no merchandise to buy, I would buy CBJ plush or prints of the above images, key rings etc but there was nothing. Look at what has just been released in Tokyo. I would kill for that Sun Bonnet plush (photo from @guyselga on twitter).

Yes. Thank you. Everyone sings BOG praises but I have never been overwhelmed in there. Too long of a line just to order food (haven’t been there since pre-order started), crowded dining room, and mediocre food. I would try it again just because everyone seems to love it so much I must be missing something, but we’ll see how the reviews are with the upcoming menu changes.

In the evening I walked over to Riverside to check it out and have dinner in their food court. I thought the moon was looking beautiful. It was a charming, peaceful walk and not too long as I was in one of the outer buildings of French Quarter.

IMG_0490 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

The mansion buildings were lovely so I crossed over the bridge and looked around and then walked back across to the main buildings.

IMG_0503 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

There was a horse and carriage parked ready to go on a trip.

IMG_0500 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I thought Riverside was beautiful but much busier and larger in scale than French Quarter. I like the atmosphere of French Quarter much better and decreed to myself that I would stay there every time I visited WDW. However, for the still tentative trip I have booked I had to book at Riverside as there were no discounted rooms available at French Quarter.

Nah probably not. I think it’s cool just to see what it is if you have nothing else to do, but if I was there without kids it would be last on my list. Maybe only above tea cups and dumbo and that’s just because I would get sick on those for sure. It is also very time consuming.

Thanks, I think I'll do it at some stage so I can say that I've done everything but there are a few things I need to get around to first that I don't really have any interest in, such as the speedway!

Yes.

YES. Country bears are awesome.
Somehow the design of the room seems to amplify the cutlery sound and it is so clangy in there!!
