Thanks to the US gov't, who WON'T be going to Disney World?

The situations of this past week reminded me of this thread, where people were thrilled over the economic stimulus checks they were supposed to receive, and who was or wan't planning to use that money to go to WDW

http://forums.wdwmagic.com/showthread.php?t=270649

I was just wondering if anyone, sadly, had to change their plans now because of the economic situation looking, shall we say, a tad more bleak than even earlier this year?

I know you weren't singling me out, but I think it's best to point out that I don't think I'm in crisis-mode, nor do I think I was whining.

Oh I don't think you were whining. But a lot of people doing the same things as you (eating out less, etc) are whining about those very things and totally freaking out over it. I think it's a huge overreaction in most cases.

Sorta like "I might have to start drinking...TAP WATER!"

Or "I feel like our summer place is just being wasted!"

I tells ya, the crap you hear on the morning commute...

So true. There are a lot of people whining about the most trivial things but there are also quite a few of us that were not living above or means that were suddenly thrust into a situation where they were. A couple of years ago we made several hundred more than we spent per month. Even with all of our cuts we are basically breaking even now and it would not take much to launch us into a deficit.

Am I feeling the effects of this economy? You bet.
I am to the point of being homeless? Not yet.
Do I think about loosing my house? Every day.

I work in construction so it is understandable that my pay checks have been hit pretty hard. At first overtime dried up. This was no huge deal but it was a nice safety valve. It also paid for the majority of our Disney trips. The next thing that went were are Christmas bonuses. This was a bite as that bonus was my Christmas budget. Now I had to pull form other places for that money as well as drastically trim down what we did for Christmas. The next thing to get axed were annual cost of living raises. As of right now I have not had a raise in 3 years. The last bit bite was 10% pay reduction. Both of those hurt big time.

When I look at the big picture I am making less per year then I was 8 years ago while the cost of groceries, gas and electricity has skyrocketed. Pretty much every non essential has been cut (Disney, eating out, movies etc) We still have a few places we can make cuts but they would not amount to more than a few hundred bucks per month. Right now we are just holding are heads above water. All it is going to take is one more set back to put us in a position where defaulting on our mortgage is a real possibility.

That set back is a real possibility come mid December as my wife was just notified that she may be put into surplus (fancy word for laid off) in mid December. My job is also not guaranteed in any way. I work for a small company and quite honestly the owner can shut the doors whenever he wants.

Things do seem to be steady in my business right now and I am really hoping that the election, regardless of who wins, will result in a turnaround. Economics seem to be as much about psychology as it does money. When people feel good the economy is good. When all they hear is doom and gloom the economy goes into the crapper.
I feel your pain! Here hoping things get better for us all! We all tend to live up to our means when things are good, buy a newer car, or even upgrade our cable. Thing about that is when the economy tanks we still have the bills to pay. I am working OT these days, just to stay ahead of the game. We don't go out to eat, to movies or even order in and we are okay. But there are days when I am scared too so I know your pain.

I have yet to feel any effects of the so-called bad economy.

Anytime money's tight it's because of our own doing. I imagine that is the way it is with most everyone else, except they'd rather blame it on the government than their own materialism and lack of common sense with money.

(Not including anyone who's been laying off in there for the record)

Wow.. aren't you just so special!!!!

So everything is just the same for you today as a year ago. Your 401k didn't take some kind of hit??, cost for utilities, food and such hasn't gone up???? Not that this things will stop some from going to WDW. But it may be enough for some to not do/see all they planned to see/do at WDW. Unfortunately there are others that will not be able to go because this economic situation just will not allow it. It has nothing to do with someones materialism and or lack of common sense with money.

EDIT... well now that I have read the complete thread... I will admit I misunderstood exactly what you were saying Laura. I agree that some who have been living above their means should really not be complaining. But not all people live above their means and have ben living with budgets for some time... and these are the people who are being hit now and we do have the right to complain as the employers cutback and squeeze more from us while all the bills are going up like crazy. Try living in NJ ...... we are one of the highest in pretty much everything except gas.

I come to WDWMAGIC.com for enjoyment. The joy everyone gets from Disney, trip planning, sharing photos, etc.
I get enough "news" everywhere else.

Yes..I am talking about the people agonizing over the economy because they are not used to having to make sacrifices.

I do see what you're saying...but this thread was about people who can no longer go to Disney World because of the economy. ANYONE who goes to Disney World is living a pretty decent life. If they aren't - well then they shouldn't be going to Disney World and they should be straightening their priorities out.

Though I guess I don't have much right to weigh in on this situation. I really haven't been affected much by anything in the economy. We have a stable, protected military income and benefits. We get groceries on base where they remain very inexpensive. Gas at the gas station I use never hit the $4.00 mark. The only thing that has changed in my budget between last year and this year is I budget an extra $5 a week for gas. I guess it's all about what kind of job you have and where you live.

I humbly proffer the advice given to me & others when we get to carping on the topic at hand: Don't like the topic? Don't read the thread. Problem solved. :)
Thought this could use re-stating, since a few of us enjoy discussing the world and "the World" equally — and even simultaneously. Some folks take their pixie dust straight up, while some of us enjoy it mixed with a little news, sports and weather in the morning. I'm one of those people who prefers to keep the resort TV tuned to the news instead of the Top 7 on vacation.

I don't see what this thread is hurting. It seems like a pretty civil discussion that one can choose to join in or just ignore.

No, but I can see how this is a borderline topic and could easily get ugly.

I mean, I do have to admit I wonder about using a Disney trip as a gauge of economic health. I get the impression that there is some thought this is darn close to being considered something other than a privilege.

i agree with you 100%. why does everyone feel the need to blame the government when something goes wrong? i personally think there should be less government in my life, social security should go too, take responsibility for yourself, save your own money for retirement.

We planned are trip last aug (07) for oct 08. My dd, her dh and i are cutting back on the amount of money we're taking. If we hadn't planned so far in advance we would be cutting are days there from 10 to 7. We're lucky we got the dining plan so everything is paid for but spending $$$ for us and my 3dgk. They got alot of disney dollars and gift cards for bdays, christmas, and easter!

Yea, I still pay over $4 a gallon for gas. Because you know, the Jag takes premium grade.

And Slappy, you can start any thread you want. I like forums with some meat on them.
