Teppan Edo-Is it all that or just hype?

I have always read rave reviews of this Japanese grill but there are several brands of Japanese grills around where I live and for the most part they are all pretty tasty, we have our favorite of course. My question is, are all these great reviews from people who don't usually or never eat in those types of places or is Teppan Edo really spectacular?

We are planning a fall 2016 and hoping for the tail end of Food & Wine Fest (dates for 2016 not released yet) and are cautious about too many reservations in EPCOT but as always wanting to add things we have not done yet. Thanks in advance :)

We ate Teppen Edo in February for our DD's 12th birthday. The food was excellent and the "show" experience was a lot of fun. We are not typical hibachi customers, but it was a blast. As an aside, they really went out of their way for her birthday. They had a signed (in Japanese) disney birthday card from the whole staff. It was exceptionally sweet.

We do TE every trip we are there. Our first time was Christmas Eve about 5 years ago. It is no different than your local hibachi in the sense that its a traditional hibachi experience. The chefs do a great job putting on a show and interacting with guests just like your local hibachi probably does. The food is exactly what you expect it to be, no worse or better than what your local hibachi probably offers. We have another ADR for Christmas Eve this year too. I won't rave saying its god's gift to the hibachi experience but it is fun and the food is decent which says a lot for what's becoming of Disney dining.

Honestly, I love Japanese Grills and Disney's ranks near the bottom for me. Don't get me wrong it is good, but nothing special. Vegas has three way better.... 4-5 around me are better as well....

I have never been that fond of it simply because there is noting all that unique about it. The show is fine and the food is fine, but there are better quality and lower price options for Teppanyaki just minutes off property.

I think it's definitely a 'safer' option of Japanese fare. That doesn't mean it's bad, cause it's not! It's very tasty and a unique atmosphere for those who don't go to hibachi at home. But we prefer Tokyo Dining for more a more authentic meal. I don't think I'd return to Teppan Edo in this day and age when I appreciate all the other food experiences in EPCOT.

We have always made it a "must do", but we were not as pleased with the experience this past February. The hibachi rice was not made at the table but rather came from the kitchen with only small bits of beef in it. The food was fine - but nothing better than that. And the hibachi table was showing a little wear - some warping in places at the edge of the grill. We were all a little less than impressed when we had always loved the experience. It was OK - but we decided to give some other restaurants a try on our next trip.

I have never had rice made at the table which is another huge huge drawback... Just better options

Thanks for your input everyone. We are more than a year out from this trip so I think we'll leave this one on the table (ha ha) for now as a choice but not a must do. Coincidental to the first reply, DD will be having her 15th birthday during the trip and has grown fond of teriyaki chicken in recent years. But with her picking everything on her b-day, I'm not sure EPCOT will make the top of her list. As a recent thrill-seeker and avid milk shake lover, the Studios might win out with Rock n Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror followed by a Sci-Fi shake. Still lots of planning to do on this trip but we'll keep the Teppan Edo in mind.

i can't speak on comparing it to other local orlando hibachi locations. but i enjoyed my dinner at teppan edo. the japan pavilion in general is very cool and fun to visit. food was good (hibachi is always good, kind of hard to mess that up). they prepare the food with a disney "twist" as they cook everything. i don't know. not much to complain about really.

I've always been a fan of the Japanese "cook on the tabletop in front of you" restaurant. In fact, we have one in town and it's my favorite restaurant. So, I was willing to give Teppan Edo in Epcot a try. The first try, I was very underwhelmed by the menu and by the food I ordered. It was just ok at best, and the cook didn't have much of a personality, so that experience ended up being similar to what we get at our local Japanese place.....except the food quality was less. We actually went again a few years later with others who had never been, and ended up having the same experience. For the price, I would certainly expect the food to be a lot higher than "just ok", and it really isn't. It's not the worst restaurant to eat in, but it's not up there among my favorites.

It's not "all that", but it is "all just OK".

I thought that it was better than Benihana. The one that we went to had poor service, a not so good chef and they even forgot to give us rice! We had to ask for it. Our experience at Epcot when perfectly and we had a great time.

People's enjoyment of Teppan Edo seems to depend on whether or not they have good Hibachi options back home.

Guests who rarely or never visit non-Disney Japanese steakhouses seem to love the place.

Personally, I'd much rather spend my Disney time and vacation money on something that's harder to get back home, like Biergarten, for example.
