staying on disney property vs off property

We will be staying at the poly for most of your stay, but we will arrive a day early. We will also have family from out of town joining us (last minute decision). If we stay off sites the places that we want to stay at will probably be around 250 for both our families (including resort and parking fees), but if we stay at POP we can get it for 280 for both families for that one night before we check in at the poly. In this case would it be worth it to spend the extra $30 and what are the benefits of staying on property vs off property if you're just staying for that one night? We plan on checking in at the poly around 7 am before heading to the parks.

We've stayed on property and been at 2 different hotels the same trip. If you stay on property the 1st night, all you have to do is drop your bags with the bellman and let them know that you're staying at the Poly--they'll transfer your bags over and you can be off to enjoy the parks without the hassle of loading the car up.

Thanks for the information NelleBelle. If our other family members really do join us there's going to be 8 of us. It might just be easier to spend the extra 30 so that we don't have to pack up the van to just unload it at the poly.

We had a trip where we spent our first night offsite. Mind you I did it for $ and a surprise factor, but we stayed at a well rated motel up on Irlo Bronson about 3 miles from the maingate. No, it was nothing fancy, but it was safe and cheap and allowed me to add a little more pixie dust to the Disney part. We checked into the Contemporary around 7am the next morning.

When you check in early like that is your room usually really sooner than their standard check in time?

Since I am local I would have never opted to stay on-site due to the higher costs then other resorts in the area (Westgate Lakes, Mystic Dunes, Orange Lake, ect..) We stayed at Westgate and Mystic dunes (for a car show) the wife and kids went to Disney using the shuttle bus. We started staying at WDW onsite resorts 4 years ago and have never looked back. Honestly the prices at Disney are not bad at all I would never stay at any other resorts except for WDW resorts. Thus the reason why we purchased DVC @ Grand Floridian as we stay at Disney 3-4 times a year we are also AP holders for the past 3 years.
-Convenience to access to the parks
-Excellent transportation options without having to you use your own vehicle during your stay.
-Food is prices well not expensive and not cheap “just right”
-Love the Magic bands IMHO it really makes our stay that much easier just about everything we need is on our wrist.
-Dining plan IMHO excellent and well worth the $$ we used it last month (quick service meal plan) and we ended up saving $$$$ over what we would have spent if we did NOT do the dining plan.
-The hospitality WDW offers IMHO is bar none the best for any resort in the area and anywhere where I stayed. The only other resort I have ever stayed at that offered the same if not better service is Wynn Las Vegas.
-Let’s face it the kids and wife love Disney and this make them happy and I do truly enjoy going with them.
Overall IMHO staying on the property is an excellent choice and as I stated above we purchased DVC @ the GFV last month so we are locked in for the next 50 years :)
