We were there in DEC and it was closed. So were lots of other rides, Alladin, Voyage of little mermaid etc. But everyone talks about it. What is inside? Alot of different things to do or is it a ride? Hate to ask this question but we really don't have a clue. I know we hope that all is open this next Dec.

It's an omnimover attraction that takes you through the evolution of our human race (based on the communication aspect). The attraction just got back up from a long refurb. You can find lots of info on this site if you search!
Edit: you beat me!:)

SSE was open during December. It just had a "very soft opening." This is SSE:

go to youtube and type in spaceship earth and you will find some recent videos of what it looks like.

the attraction is within the sphere itself. the building you walk around is where the hands on exhibits are made by the sponsor of the ride, which is Seimens.

When we went on Dec 12th there was no one entering or coming out. Plywood blocked the doors I am guessing. We were there the same time as you Lori Mistress. I remember doing a day by day total with you on days till we left...

Disney doesn't announce when they will be having their soft opening. It's completely random. They usually allow only a few dozen to a hundred people to test the new version of SSE. We rode SSE twice, but we saw SSE opened a few times. One day it was open for fifteen minutes only!!!

We caught our soft opening preview on Saturday, Dec. 8th. It was really by luck. People were lined up at the construction wall and we waited around a few minutes. There was no telling when or if they would open it. We started walking off and didn't get far when we heard cheers from the line. We ran back and jumped in line. We were thrilled. They literally moved a section of the construction wall aside to let folks in. It was cool.

To the OP, sorry you missed it. SSE is a classic..all inside that big ol' ball. It's a cool journey thru the history of communication and mankind. Lots of scenes depicting history, neat AAs, great narration, and it's a nice, relaxing ride. We love it, revised version and all. :) Something big to look forward to for ya!

We were at Epcot numerous times on our trip. We were there on the 10th and we experienced the first soft opening for the attraction. Though, every time we were on it the ride was always breaking down. We waited an average 10-15 minutes.

The storyline isn't really so much about advancements in communication anymore as it is about advancements in technology and how even old advances impacted advances that we had today.

Basically you enter the large geosphere (many people call it the golfball) when you first enter the park. You board an omnimover style ride vehicle (think Haunted Mansion style vehicle) and begin an ascent into the top of the geosphere. Along the way you pass several AA scenes depicting important events in human history that deal with advances in technology. Cavement learning to do art, phoeneicans inventing the first alphabet, papyrus being invented, the Romans and their roads, the printing press, the adent of computers, etc... all along Judi Dench explains how each one of these advances in technology lead to another one. In the end we are reminded that we're only on part of the journey and that there are still advances to come that we can be a part of.

At that point a screen comes on in your vehicle which asks you several questions about yourself and then depending on your answers plays back a video showing you taking part in the future. Unfortunately to many of us, this part is a bit of a letdown as its more of a cartoony future than a real one, but many find it humorous. Either way it doesn't ruin the ride. Once you exit the ride you are deposited into the post show area which has tons of interactive attractions dealing with technologies that Siemens is involved with.
