Something FINALLY Happening with the 20K Leagues Lagoon at MK?

I was informed today that the Character Festival which currently occupies the old 20K Leagues queue area is now closed and will not be reopening. Could this be the start of something new?

Last I heard was they are expanding the Mermaid Lagoon into something Mermaid themed. Not exciting for me, exciting for 8 year old girls and Mermaid fans.

to be fair, though, from what ive seen of the TDS pictures of it, it is awfully nice to look at.

Nicer looking than an empty lagooon.

Mermaids lagoon

If they are truly opening Mermaids Lagoon as is in ToKoyo it will be absolutely beautiful. Even if adults can't really enjoy it as the kids will be able to, it doesn't matter to me. we are all adults in my family now and we were all mezmerized by the beauty of it. I would go in it just to look around. It will be so much better than the eyesore that is there right now!

Just as a side point: We were told that Fantasyland Character FEstival was closing due to low numbers and a need to "prioritize" our assets in the Entertainment dept. In other words, Entertainment is currently understaffed and some areas need us more than others (Toontown, Town Square, Castle Forecourt, etc.) so FCF was dropped.

Ahh, a voice of reason! Thanks for the info!

Personally, I don't see the mermaid lagoon thing happening, although I think they should do something with that wasted space.

I've seen pics from the 70's of the gorgeous underwater landscapes that were created in that lagoon, and I think it is a shame it is going to waste!!! I hope something good does come out of it all...hey btw, did 20k UTS lead back out of the lagoon into a show building or something??? just wondering:animwink:

There was a show building, yes. It's behind the waterfall the subs always travelled under.

Just a thought

I would hope that they do something to make use of all the great underwater capabilities they already have in the lagoon. A brief illustration: I took my family to Disneyland when my youngest son was 9 years old. Two years later, when he was 11, we visited WDW. After riding on 20K UTS, I asked him which he liked better, the one in DL or the one at WDW. His response was that he like the one at Disneyland better because it had real fish. This is something that adults don't think about very much, but to a child, something like 20K UTS can be a very magical experience. Disney has proven they can provide it in the past. I just hope they will do it in the future.

Someone already beat me to it. but i was also going to suggest that in these times when character cast members are needed that it would have to do more with cast allocation than a pending construction project.

The thing we have to remember is that this space has been vacant and used for temporary "attractions" such as a meet/greet for years now.

Given that HM and AE will be going through rehabs over the next year and all the huge projects such as Soarin, Beastly etc.. WDC may not want to put any funds towards refurbishing that area when they apparently haven't felt the need to as of yet.

The aspect that sets it aside from other long gone attractions is that its not ugly to look at. The newer generations of WDW visitors that never knew 20,000 leagues have no frame of reference and just see it as scenery these days.

They've rehabbed or totally redone almost all of the other Fantasyland attractions since 20,000 leagues closed so it looks like we shouldn't expect it to be done until they imagine an idea for that space/land that wouldn't work anywhere else.

Yep, and it's a pretty big one:

General rule of thumb:

If Tokyo does it first, don't hold your breath on us (WDW) doing it.

Tokyo spends tons of money that our people would die if they saw the cost.

Example: AK built for approx $800 million. TokyoDisneySea built for approx $4.5 Billion.

Tokyo believes in the theory that you must spend money to make money. Orlando believes that you must cut all cost to make money. Seeing how Tokyo Disney is the most profitable theme park in the world (per sq/ft.) I think they have the better idea. :veryconfu

Oh well, at least we can dream about getting DreamLights (never will happen though.)

DisneySeas

I went to DisneySeas last March(02) on a weekday. The park was at capacity. I've been talking on the Tokyo board with a guy who seems to know attendance statistics and he said its rare for the parks not to be at capacity.

We only could do Indiana Jones, the ride in Port Discovery, and see a live show. The lines dwarf most summer days at the busiest WDW attractions.

But we did manage to toss down a few drinks inside the steamship bar which was empty besides the 3 of us and another couple, who were from Australia. lol...

As far as the AK stat of 800 million, is that the hit that WDC took, or is that before the figure McDonalds paid them. Because i think they put down close to 400 million to build Countdown, general advertising, the inpark disguised mcdonalds and the two on property mcdonalds, right?

Not quite.
Tokyo has the deepest pockets, so the first part is true.
WDW builds relatively often, and with pretty good quality. Cuts are made fairly prudently.
Cutting all costs....that's TDA. Poor Disneyland could even wind up without it's monorail from budget cuts.
