Trip Report Shrouded In A Daft Disguise *COMPLETED*

Two weeks ago today, I returned home from the most surreal Disney vacation I have ever experienced.

During my last visit in February, I couldn’t have imagined having to wear a face mask and have my temperature taken before being allowed into a park. “Social distancing” wasn’t part of my vocabulary. Hand sanitizer was something I carried in a little bottle in my purse, not something in giant containers at the entrance/exit of every attraction.

No park hopping? No Fastpasses? No FIREWORKS :jawdrop: ?!! Not even on my radar screen.

Like a bolt out of the blue, the pandemic struck and life was dramatically altered. For everyone. And there is no Magic Mirror to tell us when it will be over. For me the pandemic has been a reminder to take nothing for granted ~ and that there can still be joy in the darkest days.

My name is Tuvalu and I have been a WDW annual passholder for nearly 25 years. I was raised on Disney and so were my children. The parks have always been my “escape” from real life. Could they still be an “escape” in the midst of a pandemic? After months of quarantine, I was ready to find out.

My daughter Em was my travel buddy. My husband Woody had reservations, but not for our safety. He was concerned we’d struggle with the restrictions and disappointment with all the changes. He wanted us to come back happy and wasn’t sure we would. Truthfully, I wasn’t sure we would either. After much research and due diligence, Em and I felt prepared to embark on a vacation with few expectations.

Full disclosure ~ I‘ve wrestled with writing a report of our trip. The pandemic and subsequent events have caused much division on this Disney fan forum. I’ve always considered the trip reports section to be a “safe space” and hope it stays that way. My goal is to provide entertainment to the reader, nothing more.

With that in mind.....

I'm not enticed by pumpkin but thanks for thinking of me!

You + me = Lodge lovers. Are you staying there on your next trip?
No, we'll be staying in a one bedroom at the Boardwalk Villas. We figured we'll be spending more time at Epcot and DHS which are so easy to access from the Boardwalk Resort. WL Villas are a tough resort to get into with DVC unless it's your home resort. I've been lucky twice since we bought into DVC to stay there and hope to in the near future!

I decided to piggyback my visit with Woody in this TR since y'all have seen a couple "previews" already. ;)

Not until Woody received a full debriefing of my vacation with Em (once I got home) did he agree to keep our August dates. He wanted confirmation that I truly did enjoy WDW with limited offerings, restrictions and wearing a mask in summer humidity. With my assurance....and his need to be someplace other than inside our house....he began to look forward to our getaway.

Background ~ Woody and I travel to WDW every May for the Flower and Garden Festival. This year we were booked for one night at Gran Destino Tower followed by six nights at the Grand Floridian. When the shutdown happened I moved our trip from May to the end of August. Easy, right?

Enter the NBA. Team accommodations now affected both our reservations. I waited for a call from Disney to learn where we'd be moved. After a few weeks of radio silence I began to get nervous as I read reports of others receiving calls (and nice upgrades!) So I called and was on hold for three hours before speaking with a CM.

Our Gran Destino reservation would be a "lateral move" to Caribbean Beach Resort. (Hey now.... @fractal was moved from Gran Destino to Contemporary! @coachwnh was moved to a one bedroom villa at Riviera!) Sorry CBR lovers, but after my first stay there I vowed never again. Still it was only one night, and I thought, okay we'll give it another try.

Our Grand Floridian (lagoon view) reservation would be a standard view one bedroom villa at Riviera. I wasn't happy about this either. But I tried to be positive and I learned all about the Riviera thanks to YouTube videos. Yes, it looked very nice but I was hoping for something more familiar and comfortable (remember this was still during shelter-at-home.) I wasn't sure the Riviera would give me the "Disney bubble feel" I longed for. (Do you understand now why I asked all those questions, @coachwnh? ;))

Then something exciting happened. AP room discounts dropped. I could book a studio villa at the Polynesian for less money than what we had pay for Riviera. Yes the room would be smaller but IT'S THE POLY. Home of TUVALU. Nostalgic, familiar, comfortable. Could it get any better?

Yes, my friends, it did. Exactly one week before departure I saw an ad on this site for last-minute DVC rentals through dvcrentalstore.com. I found a Poly studio for our dates (plus an additional night!) for half the price of our AP reservation. I immediately booked it and canceled our AP reservation.

How happy were we??!!!

I would take Poly too, and I haven’t even stayed there!🤣 I was looking for a great upgrade too! But they gave us CBR. Some people get all the luck. 😉
