Last week while discussing his upcoming trip to Taiwan, Mayor Han Zheng discussed the on going project to build a new Disneyland in Shanghai. He said; "The planned first-phase space for Disneyland in Shanghai could be 3.9 square kilometers including the 1.16 square kilometers of core area. It won't be the smallest Disneyland in the world."

This is the first time that anyone from the government has talk offically about the park being larger than the 1.16 square kilemeters so far approved by the Centeral Government.

I tried to pay attention to my teachers in the 1970's who insisted we were all Going Metric! by 1980. But I forgot. How much is 1.16 square Kilometers?

Is that a Tokyo Disneyland sized park? A Hong Kong Disneyland sized park? A Paris Disneyland sized park? Is it big or small?

I got roughly 287 acres. By comparison, DLP is the largest DL-style park at 140 acres. (HK DL is the smallest, at 55 acres.)

So is this park really going to be twice the size of the one in Paris? Seems very unlikely, to say the least. I'm assuming there's some deliberate ambiguity as to exactly how much acreage the theme park itself will take up. But it sounds like they have plenty of room to work with.

If that's the case, that might be the size of the whole resort.

The mayor's quote says "The planned first-phase space for Disneyland in Shanghai could be 3.9 square kilometers including the 1.16 square kilometers of core area. It won't be the smallest Disneyland in the world."

It sounds like the whole resort could be 3.9 square km, which works out to about 964 acres. (I believe DL Resort in Anaheim is around 300-500 acres, and WDW is around 25,000.)

But it's not clear what the mayor means by a "core area." Is that the theme park, or all of the developments surrounding it? Maybe the larger figure will include undeveloped land? The quote just isn't that clear.

At any rate, his statement that "It won't be the smallest Disneyland in the world" looks like a bit of an understatement based on this.

Yeah, we are going to need a bit more information to make any sense here.

My understanding is that the City of Shanghai wants to build a very large park with the start being the Magic Kingdom and some hotel space. It wants to add more parks once the first phase is up and running. The Center Government must approve everything and so far has approved only the Magic Kingdom and the hotels, but has limited development to 1.16 SK that is listed as the "Core Area". Shanghai is still developing the full site in the way of Roads, drainage, utilities, etc. in hope to get the Centeral Government to allow the additional area to be developed.

Just got another press release from the Mayor of Shanghai office:

BEIJING, Mar 09, 2010 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) --

It may take five to six years for U.S. entertainment giant Walt Disney Co. to complete its Shanghai Disneyland theme park, pushing the opening to 2015 at the earliest, Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng said at the National People's Congress here.

The first phase of the park itself will be located on a 1.16-sq. -kilometer tract. The entire site is 3.9 sq. kilometers, with the remaining 2 .74 sq. kilometers slated for commercial facilities and parking.

The resort will be smaller than Hong Kong Disneyland, which at 1.26 sq. kilometers is currently the smallest Disneyland park.

China's National Development and Reform Commission has already formally approved the resort, and city officials are negotiating with Disney over how it will be operated. There is some concern that once Shanghai Disney land http://www.tradingmarkets.com/news/...to-take-5-6-years-to-build-mayor-831855.html#opens, those on the Chinese mainland will go there, reducing patronage at the Hong Kong park. However, Han said, "The two cities are brothers and will work together."

One square kilometer is 247 acres. WDW MK is 107 acres, I believe. The writer is confusing the difference between the park itself and the resort as a whole.
