Seasoned Disney Vet Shocked to Learn New Things

Just because YOU didn't know it was there doesn't mean other people don't. I don't like how this forum is so quick to assume everyone in the world can't possibly get everything. It's kind of a bold accusation.
:dazzle: :brick:

I've got to agree here. I've had friends pick up on the studio transition during their first time at WDW. (That doesn't mean they knew about the old backlot tour.)

Don't doubt the public so much, Epcot Explorer. Disney did in CA, and look at the PR mess they went through with DCA.

True.

I'm just a little shocked and embarrassed that I didn't know it!:lol::o

Sunday at the Studios will be interesting. I shall be scouring the park.

I understood the gates as the transition to the studio, but I never knew that they actually were barriers at one point and served a purpose (albeit probably not staffed) instead of just scenery. This concept is what I was referring to as the vast public not understanding.

Brush up on your Movie history then.

:king:

My favorite Studios Detail has to be the crates at Min & Bill's. Read the names!

And better yet, do some sitting around and get a feel for the park.

Actually the security gates were added recently, they are new and serve as the transition pieces for the Backlot on the left side of the park...

I'm quite sure I recall them being there for many years.

I don't want to speak for Martin, but I've remembered them as long as I've been going to the parks.

Ditto.

(Seriously, Imagineering 101: You learn at the parks, not in the books.)

Now that is a bold statement.

I don't recall them ever being used as barriers.

It appears they were only barriers from early 1989 (park opening) to late 1989 at which point guests were allowed to walk back into NY Street. Soon after, Star Tours opened and guest flow was now completely past the gates and the gates remained as scenery.

I did like Disney-MGM Studios in the early days. I had a theme it was unique and worth the visit. Disney Hollywood Studios not so much there is more to do but it is not a "Studio" anymore.

Yeah, the entire front half of the park is fantastic and truly feels like old-school Imagineering. Check out the references to the Rocketeer and Who Framed Roger Rabbit, too.

Well Disney Parks LOVE the Rocketeer still.
Music from the movie is found in DHS bgm, Soarin queue, Epcot FoN, DL Astro Orbiter "transmitter" show, and probably a lot more places.
