Sandy's Heading My Way

What a loss. So sad for the missing crew members and the ship. It was sunk about 160 miles Southeast of Cape Hatteras. I do not understand it's location know that this storm has been talked about taking it's current path for at least a week.

Where was it's last dockage?

I was wondering that also. I wonder what the logic was of leaving the ship there, must have been some reason.
Chicago is receiving the fall out winds already from the storm with surges up to 60 mph on the lake and 25-35 foot waves, closing sections of lakefront. They have closed Navy Pier outside and moved the watercraft from Monroe Harbor farther in because of the huge waves. And Chicago is a far piece from the Atlantic. I'm very curious as to why the ship was left there like a sitting duck.

The ship wasn't left anywhere.. it was lost at sea. The question is why they tried to sail around a hurricane that was over 400miles across in a tall ship when they had plenty of notice the storm was coming.

Their propulsion system failed.. they were taking on water, and eventually could not keep up with it and had to abandon ship.

That was my point. As a former Marine Surveyor and investigating countless ships and yachts that have been lost and damaged, that ship should have had adequate time to get out of harms way days before the storm hit. There has to be more to this story. They had at least a week to get that ship to safer waters. I'd be curious to read the final investigation report. Such a sad situation.

She was in CT and heading to St. Pete. If that news report is accurate. Oy. Sailing towards Sandy verses away? Reports by family member of crew said trying to skirt the hurricane.

Several Cruise Ship Captains have underestimated the size of this storm as someone else said. IIRC the bilge pumps were electric and played a big part into the taking on water. IF it was a direct result of pumps failing to remove water then it would not matter if they were clear sailing in the storm but couldn't remove wave wash/rain. Time has a very detailed article out this morning that seems to mirror the local word of it near exact.

I understand the point you are trying to drive. Some Cruise Capt. did make it in and other Capt. decided an extra day at sea was safer for ship, crew and passengers. I know all the cargo and container ships along the affected areas along the east coast made a beeline East and kept themselves, cargo and crew safe lingering out in the ocean until Sandy burnt herself out. One, Container ship was arrogant and tried to make it to port even though the coast guard shut down the sea lanes.

I'm curbing my thoughts about this particular loss out of respect of loss of life. I admire the crew that had to risk their own lives to save the crew of the sunken ship. Normally in that area larger ships are around to respond to a mayday but those ships had the good sense to stay clear of that area. An experienced Capt. takes all risks into consideration when they linger anywhere near a storm like Sandy as conditions change quickly and courses of hurricanes change. They should equally consider the rescue crews when they are making the decision. Equipment failure and flooding is an obvious risk when this type of ship attempts what they did going up against a storm like Sandy. The Captains of these huge vessels demonstrated a great deal of common sense by staying out of harms way. Me<I have more respect for the cruise vessels that stayed an extra day out to sea over the ones that rode out the storm to keep those vessels on schedule. But that is just me. It makes me sad when I hear of stories like this, so much warning in these modern times, fortunate that the vast majority of Captains heeded the warnings and stayed clear.

Evacuated to a friend's house inland and just got power back. That picture I posted before of the little fishing hut on the pier getting slammed with a wave: here is it today:

Also after scouring Twitter, Facebook, and Patch I finally found a picture of the street I live on:

And this is a video taken a few blocks away:

These images are unreal. Sleazeside and Atlantic City's boardwalk are gone. My friend just found out the building she grew up in split in half. I'm still trying to hear about my mom's place.

I lost power from about 10:00 PM last night to around 2:30 PM. Man, it's great to have power again!

I just wanted to post that my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone dealing with the impact of Sandy. While I now live in Texas, I grew up in NJ and the majority of my friends and family are still up there. I still can't believe everything I'm seeing. Be safe.

It is amazing how wide of an area was impacted. My sister, who has a home near the lake in Cleveland has been without power for two days and schools closed. You just don't think Ohio when hurricanes approach.

Prayers and Pixie dust to all who are enduring.

Not so sure about some of this news coverage...

NBC just spent ten minutes dragging on about lower manhattan going person to person 'where is the government? Have you gotten any assistance??' Inferring they are being abandoned or something. They've been without power for three days... Boohoo. That's painful but not special and no one gets door to door assistance for blackouts! Goto a shelter if its unsustainable for you.

The big thunderstorm here a few months ago people were without power for almost two weeks. And no one was crying 'where is the gov?'. They were screaming at the power company :)

I can understand your frustration at the news media for casting it in a bad light, but...come on, have some compassion.

Three days without power isn't a platform to start witch hunt over 'failed government' which is exactly the picture NBC was trying to paint.

It's not that bad relatively. It's not freezing. It's not unhealthy heat. You aren't trapped. It sucks and hurts many who rely on week to week pay, but you can pick yourself up and go on.

It's a story because its NYC and not some Podunk place. But the sensationalism has got to go

Staten Island, New York there are power outages everywhere!!
NO POWER
COUNTLESS HOMES WASHED AWAY
COUNTLESS PEOPLE DEAD and unaccounted for!
Fema just showed up as did the RedCross

The NYC Marathon will go on...YES...they are pulling police and first responders and rescue workers to tend to the Marathon while people are still not accounted for and homes are still collapsing!! Generators being used to facilitate the main tent of the Marathon when the could be used at shelters, chuches that are collecting items for those in need. Churches are making lunches for rescue workers. To me this is FAILURE!!!

I am not sure where you live and I am glad you are safe BUT!!!.... Its is BAD, It is warzone.

I thank God my family is safe and yes we have electric. It's our time to help our neighbors and give what we can. I pray for folks in our area and other areas that have been affected by Sandy. I wish you all the strength to pull thru!

Given the scale of the damage in some places it's not realistic to expect the government (whether state, local or federal) or utility companies to magically fix everything within a few days. I agree the media tends to encourage scapegoating in these sorts of situations. Of course I feel sorry for people who can't go home, or who don't have homes to go back to, or who don't have power or transportation. But they're victims of a freakish natural disaster, not of government or the power company. It's way too early to cast judgment on the performance of the various governments and utility companies involved.

Now this is exaggeration

I am not sure where you live and I am glad you are safe BUT!!!.... Its is BAD, It is warzone.

Blackouts and basement floodings do not make a war zone  I feel for the people out on Island who did experience complete destruction due to the fires. That is area is full of working class people who will be hit hard by all of this. But as much as we all look at the impact on the Jersey Shore.. we must also accept these are our RESORT towns, full of vacation homes, and major damage is limited to the actual coastal boundary areas. Lower Manhattan and SI is more of a personal tragedy than the resort towns. And sans for the fire area on SI, the impacts are on daily life and finding normalcy - not utter destruction.

Losing internet, phone, and power are inconveniences and make things difficult. You want a war zone, goto areas that all infrastructure is wiped out (not just down), wide swaths are destroyed (not just basement flooded), large losses of life, etc.
