I heard earlier it was taking on water - did not realize it sank. These storm surges are terrifying. I hope they can find the others.

Stay safe everyone.

She is completely gone at this point and I have it on 100% word from a top Nautical Historian in the country. The Maritime Community I live in will mourn this loss of life and vessel extremely heavy. Sad event.

It is starting to pick-up outside. Rain is starting and the wind has been steadily increasing. I hope this does not end up as bad as Irene last year. A small town about 30 miles from us was pretty much completely wiped out last year, and our schools were closed for a full week while families got their lives together and cleaned up along with all of the roads that needed repair.

This looks like more of a wind event compared to the nearly 10" of rain from Irene. I have my fingers crossed!!

Good luck to all and stay safe!

Thanks for this news. I have not heard it anywhere else.

Were they out there because they were taking the ship out to sea, like Navy ships do, to avoid the storm and save the shipt, and just could not get to a safe place?

It is all over the news now. Local media is covering it heavily since it happened right here and the ship was in Norfolk a ton. It was en route to St Augustine from Connecticut and was trying to go around the storm. Not sure why it ended up so close to Hatteras' shore unless it was trying to pass on the western side of it. Once people I know that are close with the vessel get power I am going to get some more info.

The survivors have a hard row to hoe ahead of them, too, I would imagine. Not only losing their jobs, but maybe a friend or two as well. I hope the others are found. The whole crew is my prayers.

What a loss. So sad for the missing crew members and the ship. It was sunk about 160 miles Southeast of Cape Hatteras. I do not understand it's location know that this storm has been talked about taking it's current path for at least a week.

Where was it's last dockage?

They were prob'ly trying to skirt it to the west because typically the west side of a storm is the "good" side, if that makes any sense. I think Sandy is kicking seas that are much higher than what are normally seen around hurricanes similar in size. The Fantasy's captain understimated her seas a few nights ago and that's being splashed all over the news, too. This ship confirms that the seas are much worse than the captains are expecting.

Definitely praying for those still missing. Very sad story, indeed.

Y'all out there riding the hurricane, I'll be keepin' you in my thoughts. I've lived near the Gulf almost my entire life. Definitely no stranger to horrible-canes. Watch that storm surge. I think it's going to be a big one the way Ike was in '08.

One of the 2 missing crew has been found, but the news is reporting her (?) as unresponsive. The captain is still missing.

Saw footage a little bit ago of Chicago. The winds are so strong that Lake Michigan has 22-25ft waves. There are people SURFING in Chicago! Looks like it's getting bad on the east coast, too. Once again, good luck and stay safe everyone!

How's everyone doing? I've heard the worst part is over for some places. Also heard there's heavy snow in West Virginia. Heck, there hasn't even been any snow here in Wisconsin yet!

Winds have died down considerably here. Lots of people have no power, but it's pretty warm out, so lack of heat shouldn't be as much of an issue as it is when we have blizzards. Most schools are out again tomorrow.

not just snow.. but upwards of 3ft... and hurricane force winds. crazy blizzard opportunity. Thunder-snow in some areas too!

Looks like NYC is getting the worst of it due to the crazy surge that has accompanied this storm.

The early surge did a number on the Delmarva coast... flooding far worse then we normally see. And now that surge is flooding most of lower NYC areas including transportation networks.

Here's a major explosion at ConEd (Power Utility) that is hurting Manhatten as well
