If we end up getting seated where we cannot see the show are we able to go outside and then return to the table? How long before the show should I make my ADR?

I would make the ADR right at the 180 day mark from the day you want to be seated. As for watching the show, I doubt they would say anything if you did this, but they may end up emptying your table and giving it away. There are a lot of people that want to eat here and watch Illuminations. You'll take a risk doing this. I suggest scheduling the ADR for (an hour) before the show starts and find someplace good to watch the show after you eat. Otherwise, make your ADR for 20 - 30 minutes before Illuminations and check in 1.5 hours before the ADR time. Let them know then that you are requesting an outdoor seating for Illuminations.

Assuming 9:00 IllumiNations, I would make your reservation for 8:00 but show up at 7:15 and tell them at check-in that you're willing to wait longer for a table on the water.

@CaptainAmerica if I am unable to book for illuminations (I wanted to go my first day) I'm afraid due to other peoples 180+10 it will already booked up for a Saturday night is this restaurant worth a visit to for an early dinner or late lunch?

They wouldnt let you do it. Its a lengthy show. Abandoning your table to watch the show, leaves a dining spot empty and someone else waiting to be seated gets bumped back. Others are waiting to be seated behind you. They want you to order, eat, then leave.

Love a little Disney every day!! ;)
They do let you walk outside and will hold your table/not clear it if your are seated inside if you let them know. Same goes for all restaurants that have access to see any shows from across WDW from the restaurant itself. They even encourage it at several of them and will even hold off getting your entree/food out etc so it doesnt get cold for whichever course you are about to get when then show starts. :)

Yes. R&C has a reserved viewing spot for guests eating inside

How long before the show should I make my ADR?
1) At 180 days.
2) Depends on your party size as a larger party will always eat slower. We usually book for 7:30 - 8pm (assuming Illuminations is at 9pm). On our more recent visits we have experienced delays in being seated so I would not advise booking after 8pm if you have a choice.

but they may end up emptying your table and giving it away.
No they won't - your server will invite you to step outside to watch and they'll keep your table for you.

When checking in, you may REQUEST an outside table but it is usual for you to be seated at the FIRST AVAILABLE table to accommodate your party size. Many people advise to defer that first table, expressing a wish to dine outside - more often than not, the entire restaurant would choose to eat outside and to watch Illuminations - if you defer you'll probably get a table after the show

Oh. My comment that they may give your table away was based on typical restaurant behavior. I have only done the Illuminations dinner there once and was basing my response off of that. I thought there might be others here that have done this more than us. :D Every other time we have eaten here it has been during the day for lunch.

We dine at R&C at least once per trip - and always in time for Illuminations. I think we have only eaten inside twice (perhaps being from the UK assists when it comes to getting an outside table ;)).

I can't answer from experience at the Rose & Crown. However, I have had many dinners at the California Grill up on top of the Contemporary Resort. It's a big thing to go out on the balcony and watch the Wishes fireworks show. You can eat your meal, take a drink out on the balcony for the show, and then come back to your table for dessert. I can't imagine that they'd do it any different at the R&C. Just discuss the timing with your server, and he/she will be happy to work it all out for you.

we recently had dinner there and wer finished by 8 so the waiter told us if we kept our receipt and came back around 5 mins before illuminations started they would let us back in as they have a small area right by the water which offered great unrestricted viewing

The fish and chips are quite good but you can get the same stuff at the counter-service location attached to the pub. I'd skip R&C if you can't get an IllumiNations time.

We have done the fireworks form Rose and Crown probably a dozen times if not more.

You do not have to worry about getting a table outside. They have a reserved viewing area you can go to when it is time. Personally, I would rather sit inside and watch from the viewing area.

The staff knows that most people dining there from about 7:30 and later are there to see Illuminations as well. I have only had a couple of times where my waiter/waitress did not ask me if I was there to see Illuminations so they could work our meal around it. I have had them go as far as asking me if we would like our meal before or after the fireworks. When we chose after, we usually see them setting our last entree on the table just as we are walking in from outside.

@Master Yoda Do you think my 180 mark is to late to get reservations for the first day of my trip??
It depends on the time you year. It can be a little tricky if you are traveling during the summer or around a holiday.

I would suggest trying for day 1 (as long as you can get an ADR at about 7:00 PM or later you should be OK.), but have a back up date and/or restaurant just in case.

Trying to make the reservation for December 10th which is a Saturday so that's why I'm worried about it
