I'm just a few days away from my next trip and I haven't seen much around room upgrades at check in. I did do the pre-check in online does that lock you into your room? Has Disney moved away from providing upgrades?

The vast majority of upgrades are because a room needs to be taken out of service for repairs etc. And if you ask for one they will be only too happy to sell you one for the full rack rate!

There is no trick to getting an upgrade. The occupancy rate is too high for much scope for them.

We were upgraded to a free king jr. Suite at Coronado in fall of 2018. We had booked standard. In our case we had done online check in but arrived at like 6:30 am so we went in to see what was available if anything. They gave us a choice of area, that was ready. Ranchos or Casitas. We chose casitas and walked into a suite. :) We have been upgraded to waterview from standard before but never anything like that it was pretty awesome. A very random thing I think.

We almost always get a free upgrade. You just have to ask. I highly suggest NOT doing online check in. Just check in like normal. And ask! We have never paid for a preferred room. Ever.

I would say the trick is not doing online check in and just ask. Unless folks go during a busy time. We always have gotten a free upgrade. We go in early May. It’s a common thing to book standard and ask for upgrade for free to preferred. Ymmv

Booked woods view room at Beach Club this past October, and got a surprise upgrade to Club Level; first time upgraded to that level ever. I thought it was fishy throughout the day that I never received a "your room is ready" text message. Had left bags with bell services in the AM, went to MK, and stopped by the hotel before hopping to Epcot. Front desk person whispered across the counter about the upgrade, and after check-in escorted us to the Club Level floor. I've never requested upgrades, and have found that we are quite often bumped up a room level without asking.

I think online check-in does lock you in a bit because it seems that they will give you the first room that is available. I am also going to Disney in a week. On my last trip we split between the Beach Club and the Wilderness lodge. At the Beach club I did online check in and received a basic room with a garden view. That's what we paid for. At the Wilderness Lodge, I checked in when we got there. I paid for a standard room and the front desk gave us a corner room with a view of the courtyard, geyser and boat dock. Not bad for a standard view room.

yep...not doing online check in...opens up some opportunities. And that car straight from the front desk upon check in....when we get our free upgrades..

When you check in at the front desk just slip the CM a $2 bill. That is code for "give me an upgrade."
However, if it is a Disney Dollar you will be downgraded to a Ft. Wilderness campsite with no tent.

We were upgraded to the tower after booking standard room at CR last year. I did not do online check in and got the room notification via text. We had a great room.
This go around I DID do the online checking so I’m not expecting an upgrade!
