Riding Mission: SPACE

The Wonders of Modern Medicine

The best way to avoid nausea and the sickness on Mission: Space is to get some anti-emetics beforehand. See the doctor before your trip, tell them you're going on a cruise or similar and you get seasick. Ask for Stemitil, Cyclazine or Metacoplamide (Don't know the US names, think they're the same but not sure). Start taking them the night before!!! Follow the usual rules, look forward, don't close your eyes etc. and you should walk out fine.

On our last trip, my friend did it on cyclazine and thought it wasn't as bad as he thought, did it again later in the week without..... laid out in the Electric Umbrella for half an hour!!!!

Even though the movement of M:S is provided by the spinning (I think of a scene in a James Bond movie when he is in a centrifuge), the sensation is one of upward and lateral motion.

(Does that make sense?)

It must be some brain trick that when you are watching a rocket take off and expect to feel that you are going up, the fast spinning makes you feel that you are, indeed, going up.

The spinning is, to me, nothing like the tea cups. I suspect that on the tea cups you have no choice but to focus on the spinning around
and around
and around
faster
and faster
and faster
to the point of nausea

(Although if you want to intensify the tea cup experience, close your eyes and put your head down. You will feel like you are floating)

I have never been one to get motion sickness, but boy was I green after this ride! I was dizzy for about an hour afterwards, and really felt like I was going to be sick during! If you read this post and find yourself questioning wether or not you should ride, then don't do it.. I was given similar advice, chose not to take it, and nearly had my whole wdw evening ruined.

I have never gotten motion sickness before in my life, nor did I after riding Mission: Space. Not only that, but, everyone in my party ate at the Land right before we went on. Everyone I was with was fine afterwards. So, if it's something you want to experience, by all means, do so... just be aware that you may feel queasy after riding it :hurl: ... but I was fine! :king:

Do you folks think it's somewhat pyschological too? I mean, I 100% follow and recommend this suggestion from my 2003 ride, but I've found that people generally find what they are looking for or get themselves so worried about the ride and throwing up, that they actually do vomit. Postive thinking is powerful! If you're worried about vomiting, just keep telling yourself (for days before, and I recommend in front of a mirror out loud a few times) that you'll be fine. Odds are, the fear will eventually become minor and not take hold at the last second in the form of tension, which can make you vomit.
Just a thought! :)

I must be weird, but the only time I felt even the slightest bit sick was the time I rode on an EMPTY stomach!! LOL

My sister and I made a beeline for this ride immediately after eating a full dinner at Marrakesh and never thought twice about it. But I dare to step on it without a morning danish or something and I couldn't ride it again for hours.:p

I've never had a problem on the ride, food or no food. I'm not really prone to motion sickness. The only "problems" I have are a slight fear of heights (I can, and do, go up high, but I just feel a little dizzy) and I'm kind of an obssessive compulsive and germaphobe, but that usually falls under OCD.

My only advice to anyone else considering this ride is READ and HEED the warnings!!! If you're prone to motion sickness, don't risk it!

(...can you guess I found out the hard way?...)

I want to hear more about the hard candy tip! Does it help to have some candy in your mouth DURING the ride, or right after it? I'm going on this ride next month and my wife is very prone to motion sickness, but still wants to try it. Thanks!

I'm not usually one to go on these types of rides but MS just looked too intriguing to pass up. I did not get sick and religiously heeded the warnings of keeping my eyes focused straight ahead (which, bu the way, works wonders if you should ever find your self hung over on a charter boat...keep looking at the horizon line no matter what!).

I got off the ride definitely feeling "off kilter", but it wore off after a few weeks. I mean, minutes.

I just didn't find the ride worthy of all the hype, as it's suposedly THE attraction to experience according to one of the propganda channels you get in your resort room. It may just be that I was built up too much for me...I'll never ride it again but I'm glad I at least did it once.

remember it is a simulator NOT a ride!

I am fearless when it comes to rides such as roller coasters, Tower of Terror, etc. I will go on anything, anytime. Alone even! I pooh-poohed all the warning posters and pre-ride stuff. on MS. "Just let me on the dang thing..." I muttered. Not realizing of course the difference between a ride, a fun little jaunt into a ride, and a SIMULATOR.

Mission Space got me. I have never felt more uncomfortable on an attraction. I was frightened, was looking for the "stop button!" and did not think I would live to the end of the Mission. Seriously.

I exited the attraction white-faced and ill. My DH, who expected me to be saying (as per my usual) this ride is for babies and wimps! Was amazed at how I looked. The whole rest of the trip he kept saying, "how the mighty have fallen!!" :lookaroun

So if you are thinking of going on MS, please please remember it simulates actual space/rocket travel and all the physical sensations of a liftoff.

Mission Space is just a no no for some

I am a long time disney world veteran. I can ride rock N roller coaster, star wars, tower of terror, even body wars (and many other thrill rides at other parks) without issue. I knew that spinning was & is a problem for me and had no intention of riding it but after much convincing from my hubby who said you could not feel the spinning ...I stupidly rode it. I had been told about the rules and followed all of them.......head back, eyes open, look straight......what a joke. The fact is, some people's brains are not made for this type of experience.....I did not throw up but wanted to....I was sick and had to lay on the grass for a hour after riding. I continued to feel sick for several hours after that. People all around us were sick and could not walk. Someone in the next sim threw up ..... If you get motion sick at all or have trouble with spinning things...........DO NOT GET ON THE RIDE. I am not a pansy and am not scared of roller coasters or thrill rides but IT was genuinely one of the sickest I have ever felt in my life. I could not focus on the screen...it was like someone was jostling my head making everything blurry....not any fun at all.

Welcome to the boards and thanks for searching this old thread before starting a new one. It sounds like you had a bad day. Maybe on another day or earlier time of day would be better for you. I know that for me excercize helps me get ready for high intensity rides. Just think what the first astronauts went through to get ready for space flights.

It's amazing just how many different reactions there are to this ride!

FWIW, I get incredibly ill on Body Wars and Star Tours (I am prone to motion sickness when spun), but I feel absolutely nothing but exhilaration on M:S. Part of that is because I do follow all of the directions. The other part, though is the fact that it doesn't really feel like you're spinning on this ride at all!

A very helpful CM (as well as my instructors when I went to Space Camp as a kid - yes I am that big of a geek!) told me that a way to get around the sickness is to have a candy in your mouth (a minty one is best) in order to keep your blood sugar up. The other tip I would give anyone who is worried is just to keep your eyes open and follow all of the directions.

Finally, it really is a short ride in the end. The intense Gs come in fits and spurts, and so no matter how weird it feels at first, just do your best to relax... Tension only makes you feel worse on these things.

Slight drift: it may just be me, but I rode it during its soft opening and on two separate trips since, and it seems as though the forces are becoming less intense. Then again, that may just all be in my mind.

Mission space....fantastic

My son and I went to WDW Dec 2003, from Sydney Australia.....I had the flu really bad but I still went on this twice because we had come so far etc......Its purely a mind over matter thing...I just kept repeating in my head I will not throw up..:hurl: .I loved the ride and was so thankful i didnt embarass myself or my 16 yr old.....although the park was spinning a bit and I did need to sit down for a few minutes....saving up to come back dec 2006 with my youngest who will be 14...and lets see if he likes it as much as his brother did...ps.did you eyes water really bad on take off, or was that just me and my medication:wave:

Hated that ride...My partner seriously thought he was having a heart attack by the time we got off the ride...Had to make an appointment with a heart specialist when we got back to Miami...

anybody been thrown up on by someone else? I'd think this is very likely, since the ride spins. I definitely had some funny feelings, but there was no point in the ride that I thought I might get sick... would have ridden it over and over again if the line hadn't been long and I'd had more time.

After riding mission:space 3-4 times i decided to tempt fate i, ate a large pretzel from the vendors outside m:s and when on the ride i looked to the side, closed my eyes and leaned forward. and i didn't get sick, at all. but i guess i'm just weird and don't get sick on rides. the only time i got remotely sick was on a weekend trip after riding ToT and RnRC 15 and 7 times respectively in a matter of 5 hours.

its not all in your mind, they lowered the speed/forces. I rode M:S during the soft opening, and nearly got sick. I rode it again last July, the speed was toned WAY down. We were told by a CM that they lowered the speed and pressure since its opening. Now i can ride it with no problem
