The new Shrek attraction has opened for previews at USH. I imagine the actual inside of the attraction will be identical to the one here in Florida and a review of the attraction is posted at www.miceage.com under the May 19th update.

---Spoilers below---

MY TAKE ON THE REVIEW

I am a little let down by this description/review (of course, this is just one person's opinion, more will surely follow). I was really looking forward to an innovative use of '4D', but it sounds like we get the typical spraying of water when the Donkey sneezes and the feeling of things running under your calves when spiders run under your chair (---which is the same as the mice that run under your chair in HISTA at Epcot) and lights that shine into the audience when a light is being shown on film (--like in Muppets). I was really hoping that they wouldn't be using some of the same things used in eariler '4D' films, both at Disney and Universal.

The major thing that seems to be innovative is the moving seats. This should be neat and may just be the thing when you experience it yourself that will make this show unique. But, Terminator has moving seats and HISTA has an entire moving theater. Of course, the Shrek seats have much more movement than either of these.

When ITTBAB opened at AK, it really pushed 4D to the next level I thought (with strong blasts of air, bugs stinging you and running under your, uhm, bottom, dense fog, very advanced animatronics, spiders that drop over the entire audience etc.). From this short review, it doesn't sound Shrek is really pushing that envelope too far. I'm sure the show will be great anyway, since it does use the effects that have made prior shows so great, along with moving seats :)

It sounds like a hoot! The moving seats sound incredible and I had no idea that they would contain that much movement. They go up and down, as well as pich back and forth! As for the in theatre effects being just like all the other 3-D shows, I don't really think there are too many effects left to try. With water effects, fog, lighting, and tactile effects under the seats all done before, what else is left? Lastly, while the writer talks about the building and queue looking cheap and how all the money was spent on the show, the version at Universal Orlando is going to have a massive elaborate queue due to both more space and a larger budget for the Orlando version, which opens June 12th.

I dont' think he was saying "the sprays of water" weren't innovating...but more that the "same effect" of "an animal sneeze" and water spraying the audience (which has been done a lot)

Yep, we've already experienced it in Alien Encounter, Sounds Dangerous, Shrunk the Audience, Tough to be a Bug, T2-3D, Twister, etc. It is entertaining, but as you've already noted we have experienced it in many different rides and it's an old effect.

I'm sure the actual show will be good enough for those long summer line queues with or without any good in-house special effects.

My response was directed at how it had, in fact, been done before. My point was that there aren't any new effects to try out. There is only so much you can do with a 3-d show.

I never thought the show didn't sound great. In fact, I think by using all of the effects used before will make it a great attraction! I just kept on hearing how amazing the 4D effects were going to be and they are not much more than we've seen before. The moving seats sound awesome, and, as I said before, may just be that effect that really does push this show above and beyond earlier 4D shows. I also recognize it is possible the reviewer didn't even mention all of the effects. From the one's he did mention, I was a little disappointed.

I'm sure there are new effects out there that haven't been thought up yet. For instance, when ITTBAB opened, I NEVER thought something would sting me in the back or that I would feel bugs running under my but (I first thought you would feel them running across your legs when the ending announcement was made, as done with HISTA). I personally can't think up anything new, but I'm not the one being paid to :D

I wish the person who reviewed it could have reviewed the story-line as well. (i.e. Good, bad, engaging, etc.) Perhaps the story is incredible. I'm anxious to find out :)

Oh...I understand where you were coming from. (I know that there's only so much you can do (with the given technology)) But, maybe if the "spray" came in a different way...than a "sneeze". (Termite-ator has "water" come from his nose, the dog sneezes, etc.)

Sounds like a rip off of the Disney 4D shows - how disappointing

Before you say that, look at the movie Shrek. Wasn't that ripping off and making fun of a bunch of Disney characeters and theme parks? Universal and Disney are tied for me for coming out with amazing attractions, so I'm expecting this will be at least good if not great. As long as it's better than Jimmy Neutron...
