Resort upgrade

Does it seem likely that a friend of ours received a room upgrade from Port Orleans French Quarter to the Grand Floridian two and a half months before they ever arrive at Disney? I thought it was a little odd that Disney would upgrade somebody for free two and a half months before they ever arrive at the desk to check in. They're going in about mid January.

Sounds a little suspicious. I would think that if they needed the space at FQ for a group or something then they would offer an upgrade to a better room at a different mod or perhaps a room at cheaper deluxe, not GF. But stranger things have happened, I guess.

Highly unlikely. As @Ember said, if room space was required at POFQ the a move to another mod resort is more likely. Plus, I can't see rooms being in such demand now for January

I can see it happening maybe when you get there but so far in advance? Great for her if it's true, the GF is my favorite.

While not common, it is not unheard of. The resorts do get overbooked and rooms go out of service for a variety of reasons requiring guests to be sent to another resort (commonly called "walking"). Only offering a lateral move is often met with resistance, especially when a guest is in a moderate or deluxe resort. Tell someone that they are going from PORS to GF and 99% of the guests will be absolutely elated.

Marathon weekend is in January. The moderates and values are typically at capacity for the weeks before and after the marathons months in advance.

I have friends that walked into All Star Sports to check-in and they were turned right around and taken to the Grand Floridian paying the same rate as All Star. They were given the reason that they were "family of the day" but the person that drove them from the All Star to the GF said that the hotel was way overbooked and they were scrambling to find rooms for those checking in that day.

I know I can't be the only one who is curious as to why you asked? Do they owe u money or something?? lol

LOL Not at all. My wife was talking to me about it, and I told her that I have never heard of something like this before, but that I would ask you all since there is a much greater knowledge of all things Disney here with this group. We just found it odd and were curious. On one hand it sounded too far fetched to be true, but on the other hand it gave us hope of an upgrade to a deluxe (maybe WL :D)

Sounds fishy. Maybe they're just being modest with their financial situation.

Many people here take awful offense with others' deluxe experiences, you know, "first world problems, I wish I can stay in a deluxe," and blah blah blah.

It not surprising at all. We were booked into the All stars resorts a few years ago and at about the same time before our trip we were offered to move from All stars to Saratoga Springs. When I called though we would have to sit thru a DVC presentation and the response was no, They sometimes move people to better resorts to let them see how they like it and maybe in the future they would stay there the next time. When we got o Saratoga we supposed to have a studio and we were booked into a 2 bedroom. So yes it dos happen and probably more often than we think.

We had a very similar experience 5 years ago. We were also booked for All Star and were moved to a 2 bedroom villa at OKW, however we were never approached on the DVC presentation thing. We had a great time.

That was a fairly common walking procedure. No sales pitch or meeting, but plenty of DVC literature in the rooms. Sort of a two birds, one stone thing.;)

I was talking to a parent in my son's class and she said her family was going to Florida for vacation. So I asked where they were headed and she said Disney. So I asked where they were staying and she sheepishly responded Grand Floridian. I got the impression she was uncomfortable telling me they were staying there.

Meant to clarify there no presentation we had to sit through. No DVC push what so ever. We were upgraded to a deluxe in the hope that futue bookings we would consider a deluxe. Funny thing is we hav stayed in deluxes sinc then and evn bought DVC on the resale market. So I guess it worked.
