I didn't see that - SWEET!!!@Cmdr_Crimson said it best:
I quoted it from an old thread. I was actually googling for a photo of the castle with the crane in the background so I could Photoshop this myself when I saw that Crimson did the heavy lifting already. My hero.I didn't see that - SWEET!!!
How do you hide a crane? It's not a transformer!
C'mon guys (and gals) we all know the best way to put the lights on the castle is to have Tink fly overhead and flicker her wings til they appear.
Anytime that holes are drilled in the structure it makes it vulnerable to rain and if you have ever been in a storm in Florida you would know that it comes in sideways like bullets. The lights regardless of put in from the inside or outside are still going to be visible. The suns reflection alone will make that happen. And that still doesn't answer the question of how they maintain the exterior of the building without a way to get to the top safely. I know that people like to believe that Disney can do anything if they put enough money behind it, but, somethings are just reality. No matter what Magic they come up with there are certain physical things that cannot be altered. (gravity being one big one) I think it is better to see the cranes a couple of months out of the year then to endanger workers, create possible structural problems and have thousands of little sparkly things showing all year long. And like I have said over and over... the need to maintain the building in the manner that everyone is happy with will make the presence of the ugly old crane necessary anyway. The problem with embedding LEDs is that you have to drill, literally, thousands and thousands of holes into the castle - from the inside. And many areas of it just aren't accessible. You'd have better luck drilling in from the outside, but again - large areas just aren't accessible from the back (interior walls, small spaces and other infrastructure, for example). "Low maintenance" or not, each hole is subject to leaking and not exactly easy to undo, down the road. I'm sure Disney doesn't enjoy the net-on, net-off approach either but it is what it is. Honestly, I'd just use projection and lasers.
Indeed, the castle needs to be maintained one way or another - and that requires a crane.Anytime that holes are drilled in the structure it makes it vulnerable to rain and if you have ever been in a storm in Florida you would know that it comes in sideways like bullets. If you hate cranes at Magic Kingdom, you're going to hate all of the construction going on at Hollywood Studios. I look forward to seeing "Take Down the Construction Walls" as our newest member.
