Maybe they could decorate it to look like a giant magic wand? ;)

The problem with embedding LEDs is that you have to drill, literally, thousands and thousands of holes into the castle - from the inside. And many areas of it just aren't accessible. You'd have better luck drilling in from the outside, but again - large areas just aren't accessible from the back (interior walls, small spaces and other infrastructure, for example). "Low maintenance" or not, each hole is subject to leaking and not exactly easy to undo, down the road. I'm sure Disney doesn't enjoy the net-on, net-off approach either but it is what it is. Honestly, I'd just use projection and lasers.
Anytime that holes are drilled in the structure it makes it vulnerable to rain and if you have ever been in a storm in Florida you would know that it comes in sideways like bullets. The lights regardless of put in from the inside or outside are still going to be visible. The suns reflection alone will make that happen. And that still doesn't answer the question of how they maintain the exterior of the building without a way to get to the top safely. I know that people like to believe that Disney can do anything if they put enough money behind it, but, somethings are just reality. No matter what Magic they come up with there are certain physical things that cannot be altered. (gravity being one big one) I think it is better to see the cranes a couple of months out of the year then to endanger workers, create possible structural problems and have thousands of little sparkly things showing all year long. And like I have said over and over... the need to maintain the building in the manner that everyone is happy with will make the presence of the ugly old crane necessary anyway.

Indeed, the castle needs to be maintained one way or another - and that requires a crane.

They *could* come up with a better way, but I doubt they can given the structure of the existing castle. If they wanted to knock the whole thing down and redesign it with current materials, with lighting and maintence in mind, they could find a way. But now you are talking huge bucks, and to what end. A castle that is crane free - not really what WDW wants to be spending capital on.

If you hate cranes at Magic Kingdom, you're going to hate all of the construction going on at Hollywood Studios. I look forward to seeing "Take Down the Construction Walls" as our newest member.

Psst don't tell them about Animal Kingdom...I heard there's a Herd over there....;)
