RED(rum), WHITE(water), & BLUE(birds)- A Grand Finale TR to Our Year of the National Parks

As my signature says...Colorado and Utah along with a trip to Louisiana for the Jennie Finch World Series were in our plans. I wound up not going to Louisiana. As some of you know, my mom had a freak incident while at Disney's Vero Beach resort and wound up in the hospital. So, I made an unexpected trip to Florida! I had a nice time with my parents and my mom is doing better, but it's also not anything I need to put into a TR.

The Colorado and Utah trip, on the other hand, was 15 days of vacation travel and I plan to share as much of it as possible. I still haven't done anything with the pics and videos on the kids' phones and tablets, but between my phone, my camera and the kids' camera...we took over 5,000 pictures and 3x the number of videoes I normally take. Yea, I finally remembered I can take vids...although, still probably not enough. Still, in light of all of this, it's going to take me a while to get all of this posted.

OK, so...the details.

Who: ME (Sandy), hubby (David), and the kids (Kendall and Samantha). I don't like handing off my big camera to anyone other than Disney photopass photogs and I didn't bring my tripod for family photos, so you're going to have to settle for separate pics to see us all. LOL

When: July 16th-30th (turned into the 31st)...let's say that 30th didn't quite go as planned.

Where: Colorado and Utah (in general, but we also popped into Wyoming and Nebraska)

What: If you've read either of my trip reports over the last year, you may remember that this was the year of the national parks for us. As this TR title would imply...this is my grand finale.

This pic below was my rough goal plan.

48439503176_5abacf72f8.jpg

I wanted to start in Denver and spend a couple of days to acclimate, before heading up to higher elevations. After that, the plan was to hit Estes Park, CO and see Rocky Mountain National Park, then go to Rangely, CO so we could see Dinosaur National Monument (the part we wanted to see was actually in Jensen, UT), then Moab, UT for Arches NP and Canyonlands NP, then to Alamosa, CO for Mesa Verde NP, a pit stop to see Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP before heading on to Cortez, CO for Great Sand Dunes NP, then on to Buena Vista, CO for Browns Canyon NM and whitewater rafting, and the Pikes Peak/Colorado Springs route back into Denver before seeing the wildlife arsenal...and then flying home. Abitious- sure. Nomadic- definitely. Worth it- OMG, YES!

DAY 1

So, we started the morning the 16th with a drive to Hobby Airport in Houston. Once again, air on Southwest was significantly cheaper than anything that would have put us out of Bush Intercontinental. I really need to rethink this because Bush is SOOOOOOOOOO much closer. We had an 8:25am flight, so we got there early, but it wasn't nearly as bad as that 5am flight last year into Montana. I also took my traditional parking spot photo...and I almost needed it this time!

48439539771_78dffa7530.jpg

We got one pic in the terminal...

48439539606_87537a0aba.jpg

This was a good way to break up the convo with the woman across from me. She meant well, but she kept insisting that I go to an oxygen bar for running in CO...which was debunked by most of my running groups.

We made sure to take pics once on board...

I ended up on the boring side of the plane. My view was mainly wing and everything good was on the left side.

See...hubby landed to seeing mountains when all I got was plains!

Rough life, I know!

We had some drama after this...from the child more likely to bring the drama! We made our way to the rail system at DIA that connects the terminals and baggage. Kendall was closer to David and Sam was closer to me, so I figured K would just follow David onto the train, since it looked like we picked different cars. I boarded my car with Sam and could see David in the next car, but Kendall was still outside as we were pulling away from the station!

Yes, Kendall is my older one...almost 13...but I had her phone and she tends to panic, so I knew this was bad. David assumed she'd just hop the next train and go to baggage, but she's a kid and for all I knew, she might think terminal B means baggage. So, I mouthed to her to get on the next train. We hopped off at terminal B (flew into C) and waited for the next train. Of course, the system broke down for a bit in this too (which was a hint of last day issues to come at the end of the trip), but I was able to spot her on the next train and Sam and I joined her in the train car. When I asked her where she was going, she thought she was supposed to go to B for baggage. Yeah...good thing I didn't trust her to keep going.

So, we finally got to baggage, but we couldn't find David. Never fails...find one and lose another. So, we just decided to go to the carousel and wait for our bags. He showed up right before the belt started moving. Three of our four checked bags were in the first 20 or so bags to come out...before the belt stopped. And the belt stayed stopped for a good 5 minutes. Once it started back up, it spit out another five or six bags before it jammed up again. Thankfully, my bag...bag number 4...was in that group. So, we grabbed it and started to make our way to the rental car shuttle. Well, not without speaking with the airport gargoyle!

48439538811_958e731966.jpg

48439538656_2a9d010383.jpg

I'd heard DIA had some neat features and this was one of them.

So, we head out and eventually get onto the shuttle for Hertz. Funny traveling jerk moment... back in Houston, while we were waiting in the security line, a man behind me was getting really annoyed being stuck behind us and a family with really young children. It got to the point that he started trying to cut his way in front of me by sliding his bins in with our stuff and elbowing his way into our group (just to be elbowed out). Well, he was on our flight to Denver...and in the line with us for the Hertz shuttle. Sure, he was a Hertz gold (or something like that) member and got to his car pick up spot before us common folk, but it looks like us slower people with kids can get places just as fast as his entitled inflated ego. END RANT!

When I got to the Hertz site for people like me, it only took me about 5 minutes to be helped. I was bothered to learn that the class of vehicle I rented wasn't what I thought it was. If you read our Sinfully Grand trip report, we had rented a Hyundai Santa Fe. It fit all of our luggage and did a good job. It was one of the vehicles listed in the possible options when I made my rental reservation, but I guess Hyundai changed the Santa Fe and the one Hertz was renting was a smaller vehicle than what we previously rented. It was either that or a Chevy Equinox. It seemed very unlikely either would hold all of our stuff...and I was in no mood for driving around with overflowing luggage like we did for our DLR/Ski 2015-2016 trip. So, I bit the bullet and paid for a bigger vehicle at the counter.

The woman saw our bags and pushed for us to rent a Tahoe or Armada, but there's no reason for that. Plus, the Armada has an 8 cylinder engine and is known to be one of the least fuel efficient vehicles out there in production. I may actually buy one at some point if certain other things coming out don't suit me, but what I drive at home doesn't need to be what I have on vacation. I wound up in a Pathfinder. That's not such a bad thing, but I confirmed a fear early on. If you remember my 2013 TR where we were in the accident, I have a 2012 Pathfinder. I was also in a 2012 Pathy when we were hit and it's why I bought another...it's a TANK! BUT- starting in 2013, they totally changed the vehicle. Not that it's bad, but it's not me. In all of our rental vehicle drama after the accident, I spent a couple of weeks in the redesigned Pathy and for whatever reason, I smacked my knee into the dash area at least once a day. Well, I guess that is still the same design, becasue the rental attacked my knee every time I was driving. OK...back on track...

We were hungry and looking for a place to eat. Kendall offered to research and found a place with a decent rating. So, we started the navigation...only to find out that this place was inside one of the DIA terminals and it was sending us back to the airport. So, we just started driving towards downtown Denver and set it to look for restaurants along the highway. In the end, we wound up at a TGI Fridays right near the hotel where we'd be spending the last night of our trip. Nothing exciting to see here...it's a Fridays. Well, unless you count Miss Sassy and Miss Fearless sitting across from me...

48439682187_b9d92c176e.jpg

It was hazy out, but I had to take a pic of the mountains off in the distance when we came out, because I live a flat place and anything not flat is cool! Also cool...snow...snow in July. Not that it was snowing, but seeing snow still on the peaks in July was cool. Totally normal for them, but still cool.

48439538411_94a484ec1b.jpg

We were too early to check in, so we drove around Denver for a bit after we found our hotel.

48439538251_f66d6d433a.jpg

This was actually taken in the parking lot of a grocery store. We wound up in a nicer area that had no convenience stores or obvious gas stations, so we stopped at a King Soopers for David to get a soda. He took over driving after this.

48439681692_6739438d90.jpg

We decided to go try and check in. We were staying at The Curtis. It's in the Central Business District of Denver, but right on the edge of LODO. Ultimately, I picked it because it looked fun. Every floor is themed and while I didn't spring for one, some rooms are over the top themed. The kids played cornhole in the lobby while I went through the check in process.

It is a DoubleTree, so we got cookies. Unfortunately, Samantha was the only one who could/would eat them and they were very hard by the time she was hungry for them. K can't and David won't eat nuts. They are piping hot when you get them, but I guess they cooled too long and went to waste.

48439537576_5f907c2103.jpg

Next, it was time to go up and check out the room.

We were on the Laugh Out Loud floor (more pics on that in a bit). The room had a lot of modern touches while still being a little bit trendy/funky/cool. We also had a bit of a view...mainly other buildings...but seeing Mile High from the room was pretty cool.

We decided to explore the themed floors as our first activity. You must have a room key to be able to do this. It's also kind of freaky because the elevators are themed and play audio relating to the floor where you're stopping. For our floor, a maniacal voice starts saying something like "7th floor- it's the Laugh Out Loud Floor- ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha." So, the most requested floor is 13, which is their tribute to the horror genre, so we went there first. Well, first I took pics of some of our floor on the way to the elevators (which were a pain because you had to hit dual buttons to call all four elevators)...

A little bit more for tonight. This should wrap up the bulk of our touring our fun themed hotel.

This will be a fun TR. I looked at your route and I'm familiar with some of the places (my hubs is from Colorado, and I traveled out there with him some years ago, to do some sight-seeing).

The part about (temporarily) "losing" one of the children at the DIA rail area was stressful, and I'm glad it all worked out in the end. When I travel, I have a hard enough time trying to not get lost myself -- I can't even imagine what it must be like to travel with kids in a very large, busy airport like DIA!! :jawdrop:

Just found this and looking forward to reading more - you know I love the West!

I agree that losing a child in an airport can be pretty stressful. We once lost my son in the Frankfurt, Germany, airport ... on an elevator. :jawdrop:

So excited to read this! We are heading to Rocky Mountain National Park in a few weeks. We are staying in Estes Park. It will be nice to see what you guys did just a few short weeks before we will be there.

We did a similarly long, nomadic national park trip a few years ago. We were moving cross country (OR to MI) and it was kind of a bucket list trip. We took 1.5 weeks and hit Redwood, San Fran, Yosemite, Mona Lake, Death Valley, Hoover Dam, Vegas and Grand Canyon. We stayed one night most places went, a few 2. So amazing though and totally worth the constant in and out of the car!!

Estes Park is very nice from what I recall, from years ago. :) (We also had a dog with us at the time, and we found a really nice cabin accommodation that accepted pets.)

That's great that you guys got to travel a similar route. It's such a beautiful state! I think that's part of how I ended up with so many pictures! :hilarious:

It's funny...in the moment, I was fairly calm and quickly formed a plan. After it was over, I had that big exhale moment where I could feel the tears of relief starting to form. I'm still thankful that my daughter can read lips!

We thought of you as we were looking for eagles. Sadly, there are no eagle pics this time, but I have a series of bird of prey pics on day 7 that were pretty exciting for us.

Wow! I couldn't even imagine losing them in a foreign airport.

It's funny, but the Estes Park part of the trip is the least nomadic portion. I figured we'd want to spend more time in RMNP, so we spent 4 nights there. I'm hoping to at least get into some of this part of the TR before you leave. We really loved our time in Estes Park.

Also, I don't know what crowds are going to be like when you're there, but by day 2, our GPS taught us the back roads to get around some of the backups going right into the center of town. We were staying on 36, just outside of the park entrance, but I think this would work for anyone trying to avoid the area where Elkhorn and 36 come together. We'd take Mary Lake Rd to Riverside (or the reverse) if things were backed up. This might not make a ton of sense right now, but for what it's worth, I mapped the alternate route so you can see this option if traffic is bad. Right now, it's the slower route, but a few of the times we used it, it was as much as 30 min faster.

DAY 1 - continued...

So, we just walked and I took pics of anything interesting...although, I think I spent more time just looking around. Sam also was manning the other camera, so I have quite a few from her as well.

We found a cow...a Denver cow, but as you'll see in a bit...snails were more the thing in Denver.

We were also looking for dinner. None of us were particularly hungry, but Kendall claimed to be starving. After going through some spots in the 16th street mall, we decided to head down this street because it all looked festive. Sadly, we were too early for the festival.

Food was decent and we had good fun with our server discussing the presence of beans in the chili. David insists it's a filler and it's a crime against chili...especially in Texas. So the server took this to the kitchen and other servers and there was lots of debate on the matter. In the end...there were no winners. LOL

We walked around and took more pics in the area...lots of snails! (among other things)

It was actually pretty nice walking around. I mean, it was hot and it's vacation and all, but we got a call at the start of dinner about David's dad. As some of you know, he's been sick and his caretaker had called to tell us he had taken a turn for the worse.

We walked a bit more...

In case you were wondering...this is the tower that was in one of my pics above.

After walking for a bit, both kids wanted dessert and the place I was looking at was closed, so we decided something sweet at Starbucks would do. Sam LOVES coffee! They both wound up getting the tie dye frappacino drink, but it wasn't very coffeeish and Sam didn't really love it. I had some awful coconut chips that were not even worth photographing!

Not sure why just one, but I did take a pic of more of our floor theme.

It was then back to the room. Again, not sure why just one...but one pic of our sunset view...

And a pic of the the TV knowing it's me. LOL

Ultimately, it's a travel day and we were tired. So, it was time for some rest.

Coming up on day 2, we have an unexpected full circle moment as we explore nature in the foothills as part of our altitude acclimation.

DAY 2

This day started earlier than I would have liked. If you read my DLR/Ski 2015-2016 report, you know I'm prone to altitude issues. In fact, it surfaced a little bit in my TR when we were in Cody, WY last summer and it's the big reason why I built in multiple days in Denver at the beginning of this trip (i.e. adjustment time). Well, it hit my tummy in the middle of the night and it was not fun. I'll spare you the graphic details as there were some other issues making it worse. I still managed to go to the gym that morning (after I found it- floors not well labeled) which actually helped...well, that and some OTC pain meds and ramping up my already robust hydration plan.

After I got cleaned up, we decided to walk to a nearby diner style spot for some breakfast. I know lots of people rave about Snooze and I saw some good things about Syrup, but both were a bit more of a walk and we were hungry. So, this Sam's No. 3 seemed like a great option, and I'm so glad we tried it. It was a block away...so super easy.

They had a huge menu, service was awesome, food was good, lots of options that were safe for me, and we could sit outside.

Yeah...Denver was really hot while we were there, but without the humidity, mornings were extremely pleasant. In fact, I was a bit chilly during breakfast this morning. So, here are some breakfast pics...including the big cinnamon roll we let the kids get to share...

Over breakfast, we picked up a conversation we left open from the night before...what to do today! I was feeling better and I was ready to start moving away from city stuff, so I suggested the Lariat Loop (https://www.lariatloop.org/). The majority of it is free and we could easily just pick the things we wanted to see and do without doing the full loop. Getting there took us right by Mile High...

And I thought these overpass decorations were pretty cool.

The section we decided to focus on took us to the edge of Golden, CO...

We started driving up to a lookout point and the climb gave us a nice view of Denver (although, it's a bit hazy).

We stopped at the first lookout once the GPS said we were officially on the loop.

As we drove higher, Kendall swore she saw an elk, but none of us could see it, so we kept moving. We'd have a number of these "I swear, it's there" moments in this trip and rather than battle over whether the person was imagining it...we just left it in a "good for you" kind of place.

This next part is where some of this trip starts to come full circle. We spent a night in Cody, WY for the kick-off trip last year. We skipped all of the historical Buffalo Bill Cody stuff last year because we were anxious to get into Yellowstone, but we were at least in his namesake city/town. Well, now we're at his resting place. I'll spare you the full historical details, but in the end, he wanted to be buried at this point in Colorado. At first, we just wandered around...

I'm a sucker for a great mountain view, so this TR is going to have LOTS of pics like these above.

And we're still walking around...

But we did eventually go up to the grave. As you can see, it is very well protected. I guess there have been fears and threats over the years from Cody, WY. It sounds like the people (well, some people) have threatened coming to CO to take his remains and bring them back to Wyoming.

We had a bit of a scare up here too. Total false alarm, but a child started screaming about something falling. With the way they were all carrying on, we thought it was their little girl, but it turns out it was a toy that dropped.

There's also a museum up there, but we wanted to keep today free. It wasn't pricey, but we have some more expensive activities that I'd booked coming up and I was just trying to keep budgeting in check.

It looks like a fairly new building and reminded us a lot of what we saw in various spots in Yellowstone and Grand Teton...especially Grant in YNP (minus the lake).

They had video running inside of various things caught on their cameras...funniest of which was an elk herd taking over the place. So, I decided to take a seat on the porch above and see what happened to stop by. A number of birds came by and perched in areas around me, but I started to notice that one of them seemed to have hints of blue. So, I switched out my lenses and waited in hopes that he'd come back...and he did!

Last summer, I was really bummed that I didn't see a single mountain bluebird. Well, this isn't a mountain bluebird, but I got confirmation that it's a western bluebird. So, here I am...day 2... and I've already seen a bluebird!

We decided to walk up the trail to check out Boettcher Mansion. We weren't able to get in (I think they were doing some work inside), but we walked around the grounds and looked at all of the pretty flowers (and other pretty stuff too).

(I still can't get over these views!!!)

We drove around a little bit after this, but never stopped. Part of me had wanted to see the Mother Cabrini shrine, since there's a neat statue on the hilltop that can be seen from parts of the highway (always took me by surprise, so I never got a pic), but nobody else was up for it. There were also some dinosaur fossil trails around there, but I got a lot of "but, we're going to Dinosaur NM...aren't we?" Don't want to burn them out on day 2, so we moved on into Golden.
