Purchasing an annual pass quesiton

My son was accepted into the college program for the fall and I'm considering purchasing Annual passes since we may make multiple trips down for some visits ... It's an excellent excuse . My question is, when purchasing the pass, does your annual calendar start on the purchase day or the first day of use? If I were to purchase one at a time ... spread out before he starts, that spreads the financial load better if they don't actually activate till first time use.

My daughter did the college program at WDW also. I bought an AP as soon as I found out. It starts the first day you use it and not when you buy it. She then went on to do the college program at DL right after graduation. I didn't buy an AP for DL since I couldn't get out there to see her as often. Have fun and go as much as you can to get your money's worth.

You dates start on the first use of the pass.
I purchased my AP in January and then picked it up and activated it in February. My AP date listed on my account begins as 02/xx,
