Hey folks...I am just back from a trip to Epcot, and I have some news and pictures.

First, the Society of Plastics Engineers is opening an exhibit in section #10 of Innoventions (East) soon (sorry, I don't have a date). another article

Here is a some text from the SPE website I found:

Another creative initiative to reach out to the public is the SPI-Disney collaboration sponsored by DuPont and GE. This planned plastics showcase at the Innoventions Pavilion at Epcot® in Walt Disney World® Resort in Orlando is being designed to raise public awareness about the importance of plastics in our lives and to generate interest in children of all ages. Programs like this and the public image campaigns run by the American Plastics Council (APC) are important in generating both general and career interest in plastics.

On the Western side of Innoventions, the CM said that they are reworking the closed off section (was Tom Morrow's Playground) and it should be reopened next year.

Next, onto The Land.

The Land is sporting a new wall in front of it on the right side. It looks like they are replacing the seating on that side, which is not a bad idea.
(Picture)
  • Soarin will open in March
  • The Land will be closed from January to March
  • The food court will remain (Yea!)
  • The pavillion would be updated to look more current

None of the cast members could give a detail of what the update would include, or if the theme would change. All 3 cast members stated that the old Food Rocks area would be a large lobby/shop, and a very long hallway would connect Soarin to this area. 1 cast member stated that 1 hallway would be decoarted with pictures, although he did not know what the pictures would be of. 2 cast members said the main focus of the 3 month closing was to address flow issues, as they expect HUGE crowds in The Land once Soarin opens. 1 cast member went as far to day that you would enter through the right side, and would have to stay on the right side and work your way around the pavillion counter-clockwise, which makes sense.

Going back to the east side of FW, the water garden is being removed, and has a wall around it currently. Also, the MS wall is still up....anyone know what this is for, it has been up for months.

Onto The Living Seas, I did not see where TLS sign was moved...it looks the same as it did on 5/8, the last time I took a picture of it. I took some pictures of the different rooms inside TLS, to show the popularity of the Nemo section vs the non-Nemo sections. I talked to 2 cast members in TLS, both stated that they had heard of plans to update the rest of TLS, but did not have dates. 1 cast member went so far as to say that he knew this was phase 1, but he did not know the details of phases 2 or 3, nor did he know the dates.

I will post the pictures from today in my gallery shortly.

Take care!

One more thing

The Flower and Garden festival is done, and most evidence of it is gone. The F&G festival center has been cleaned out and reopened, although is vacant. The closed restaurant area looked like it could be reopened at any time if needed...I will post pics in my gallery.

Great report. That's promising news about the Land. I'm glad the food court is staying. Wow it's amazing how busy the Nemo section of Living Seas was. I hope that the next phases really revitalize that pavilion.

Wooo Hooo :sohappy: For a while I thought future world was going the way of Magic Kingdom - you can have anything to eat as long as it's a burger.

Keep in mind, these are CMs. While I have heard that there will still be food offerings in the Land, in a move related to the "guest flow" issues you spoke of, I have also heard that it would be reduced from its current state with a much smaller seating area. Either way, I do not think you will see quite as large of a dining facility come Spring Break 2005. I believe the Fastpass kiosks are taking up some of what is currently the food court. Think of The Land as having 4 corners (I know it's more round than anything, but bear with me). The back right corner is both the exit for Circle of Life and Living with the Land's queue (which will change in look but not location). The back left wall features the exit of Soarin' and the gift shop/post show. The near left corner will feature the entrance to Soarin'. It would make the most sense to me that, instead of clogging up this area with the Fastpass kiosks, as well, have the Fastpass kiosks in the near right corner, and have a condensed food area inbetween the Fastpass kiosks and the exit to Circle of Life. It seems like the best way to control guest flow to me. Have guests entering the attraction in one corner, guests exiting in another, keep Living with the Land separate (exiting near the Soarin' gift shop...always good to increase spending) and then by giving Fastpassers their own corner near the new food area, they would basically have the option of riding Living with the Land or grabbing a bite to eat just 20 feet away while they wait for their time to come up.

If they really wanted to keep guest flow moving, they would position both FP kiosks (Living with the Land and Soarin) outside of the pavilion, as this would keep out the guests that just want to run in, grab a fastpass, and come back later. Although this would not help keep people in the pavilion longer, I would imagine that most people wound not stick around and wait for their time for Soarin, especially if they get a 6pm fastpass ticket at 11am. I am sure the seating area will be reconfigured, if not reduced in size, at least to create some type of clear path from one corner of the pavilion to the other. Also, the Living with the land queue takes up much more space than it really needs to...this queue could be reconfigured easily to keep the same capacity yet decrease its floorspace needs.

Exactly. The Land gets very clogged at busy times of the day and getting to all the areas are difficult as it is. Putting the FP stations either outside or just inside the doors would be a great help with traffic flows. But then again, it's not up to me.

It's certainly possible...the widening of the bridge in front of the Land certainly supports such a plan, but I haven't yet heard of anything like it. You know how much Disney likes to keep people in gift shops or spending money in some other way while waiting for their FP to come up...

Thanks for the info! I, too, am trying to find some info. One of my sources (a Disney manager) has a son who thought "the Land was being totalled." Uhh. . . I think I'll be talking to his parents. :D

Good update! Nemo is definitely the most crowded area of "Seas" (next to, pehaps, the viewing location). Phases 2 and 3, as they seem to be dubbed, have been put on hold last I heard, only to be brought back up when the budget is put into it.

And as for Flower and Garden festival, ah, sad to see it go again. It's truly beautiful; my experiences in April showed the park perhaps as beautiful as ever. Very, very nice.

Yeah, they do like to keep people spending. I remember reading an article when FP first came out and the stock price jumped. FP was sold to Wall Street as a way to keep people in the stores and restaurants spending money instead of in lines where they can not spend money.

Now, if you were in "The Land" and it was packed with people waiting for the attractions, grabbing FPs, and eating, would you really want to stick around....I would not.

Wow. I never knew how big of an effect Nemo had. If the whole pavilian gets finished with Nemo, the Living Seas will be greater than it ever was. For Seacabs, if they never return, I hope walkways will replace them.

Great pics and great report!

Nice to hear a projected date for Soarin - will help in planning for many of us :).

Well, that also depends on what kind of post show and gift shop we are looking at for Soarin. There is a lot of room if they are planning on using it all, we could get a nice post show that would attract a lot of guests...and, of course, you would have to pass through the large giftshop to reach it lol. Of course, if they hurry up with the Nemo work in the Living Seas and have it done by next spring, people could go there while they wait for their Soarin' FP :)

I also find this extremly Ironic and because of this I don't think this will happen. Why help out the competition?

Sometimes "coopetition" is a necessary evil. Reading various articles about this, SPE is trying to do a few things with the exhibit: Increase public knowledge, increase interest in plastics, and develop interest amongst kids/teens to work in the field. The overall goals of the exhibit are not to promote any of companies...not directly at least.

Well why doesn't GE put this exhibit in their Universal Parks?

It is not truly GE puting in the exhibit, it is SPE, and GE is a member of that group. As GE has a large plastics division, they probably get some pressure from SPE to sponsor....also, as a member, and a large company, they probably want to be a sponsor, a keep their place in the organization. Also, this deal was made prior to GE/NBC buying Universal.

On top of that, it would not fit the theme of the Universal parks.

WOW What a great update... Thanks a bunch! I really want to know what they are going to do to the Land, this is starting to bug me. Are they going to "modernize" it? Oh boy, I have some investigating to do... :animwink:
