People trashing the parks

Disney doesn't respect its parks, Disney doesn't respect its employees, Disney doesn't respect its customers, what's more aims for those customers lowest on the cultural ladder. An ordinary amusement park for trashy people, this is what you get.

To think that thirty years ago not even a cigarette bud would survive for more than ten seconds on the ground before it was sweeped up.

I hate to agree with you, but I feel you nailed it. Disney respects profits and growth. Respecting your property and employees (and therefore your guests as a result) costs money. In some cases lots of it, which starting about 20 years ago they refused to spend. I would hardly put WDW in the same category as an ordinary amusement park in terms of the attractions, but in terms of the cleanliness and customer behavior is has certainly become ordinary.

That being said, it is still the best of the ordinary and we will continue to go though certainly not as often and certainly spend less once in the parks.

Dirty people infuriate me. It's not that they are just dirty at Disney. I bet their house is a trash pit too.

These people have no respect for others, but does it really surprise anyone? People throw fast food OUT of their car while driving, leave their cups in parking spots, and throw cigarettes out of their car that they ruin by smoking inside. I'm sure they don't care because they only have 72 more payments on it before they trade the negative equity in for another bank owned car.
I used to think that too, but some of the most egregious littering is done by folks that take good care of their house. It is only when it is somebody else's problem do they just cease to care at all.

Think about it, that's why the don't leave the garbage in their car, they want it clean.

...my car interior is far from spotless. It would be spotless if I just chucked everything out the window.

I actually think custodial does the best they can. I always seen multiple cast members(of all levels) pick up trash when they see it around.
I went to 6flags yesterday and omg the filth. It made me appreciate WDW all the more. I don't think I saw one custodian or any staff member for that matter dealing with trash. All sorts of trash and broken things everywhere. It was actually disgusting in multiple places.
Ok, about to commit some heresy here... I am a SixFlags Over Texas season pass holder for,,, 10?,,, consecutive years now. I see more custodians there than I do at WDW! And it is clean! I am not however saying it is cleaner than WDW. Just saying the cleaning process is more apparent. ...or the visitors are more messy. The SFOT park is definitely not a poo hole.

I saw a good documentary about littering a few years ago on how the planet was so devastated by littering mankind left earth & we all got fat & floated around on levitating chairs, & there was this little robot...wait a sec..never mind...

I used to be one as well when I lived in DFW.
Maybe it was because we went on the July 5th it was...disgusting. The log flume ride had trash everywhere. The saloon show gawd...costumes falling apart and set pieces were in terrible condition.
Almost every fountain there were bottles and trash.

Unfortunately it's been that way for several years and not getting any better. People are too lazy, don't care and disrespectful of anyone elses property. The Disney custodial crew has a tough time keeping up with it all. They should start handing out fines for littering and make them appear before the Judge.

I suspect that the ever increasing ticket prices are a bit to the reason behind the greater trashing of the parks. To some people when entry goes beyond a certain point the seem to either feel that for what they are paying why should they bother to find a trash can, or given what they paid they are unhappy with it and venting the only way they can think too by trashing stuff.

Now if they would double the prices I think they might price out some of those people and the parks might be a little less trashed.

That's weird. When I go to a hoity-toity place or fly first class I am actually a little more aware of myself and am LESS likely to trash the place.

...but then again I am not mad that I paid more.

...of course nobody has to buy tickets to any leasure attraction.

Again, I don't quite get the anger for an elective.

I agree with your last sentence, tho, fully.

Where I worked at the Sports Park, they charged for parking. The guests were highly irritated that they to pay for parking as the Sports park is a Park District property and so is supplimented by taxes. When the Guest would complain they were told the EXTRA CHARGE was for maintenance.
... In the end the guest gets this reasoning that if they have to pay extra to get in, then they don't have to use the trash containers. So they leave it on the grounds, parking areas etc.

NO, if the entrance ticket prices were doubled, it won't stop the grubs, and they will be EVEN MORE TERRIBLE. Of course then maybe DIZZY can hire more Cast members to follow these Grubs, pick up their trash, wipe their noses, change their diapers.. EEEOooooowwwww!!!

This was the parking lot of a Kenny Chesney concert just a few weeks ago:

Ahh, home sweet home......... Oh boy!

With DIZZY, I understand that the Cast members are told NOT TO SPOIL THE GRUBS, er I mean GUESTs MAGIC. So they won't tell a guest to pick up their mess, never. I don't think they will tell them where the trash container is, I'd sure tell them where they could go .........

I can be pretty confident that the Grubs WOULD stoop over to pick up some PAPER MONEY that they found laying on the ground..... Imagine that!

I had heard some time back that a cup made of ICE was being tested. by some other entity than Dizzy... The reason was because of the trash problem and that people are just too lazy to put trash in a trash container. In the case of the ICE CUP, when they tossed it on the ground, it would just melt away and water the grass, LOLOL
NOW, How about those chip bags... maybe go back to paper that disentegrates wth moisture????? And BAN plastic forks, gum and straws.
What else can we change to limit the mess? lol

Cleanliness has been an emphasis at the amusement park I worked at for years - noticeable improvements in park aesthetics have occurred since Matt Ouimet took over as CEO for Cedar Fair. He is a former Disney executive. And at least at Cedar Fair's flagship park, things look great. The grounds are usually in great shape - sure people trash stuff but the midways are clean, the bathrooms are clean - there is a system. But - it is a seasonal park. And I have to think it is a little easier to keep things looking good when you only have to do it for 5 months...

I will have to take a little closer look on our trip after Thanksgiving to see if the trash is really that noticeable at WDW. Disney has always set the bar - I hope the bar hasn't fallen too far. I will say that when we visited that other destination in Orlando 'Whose Name Shall Not Be Mentioned' - it was in great shape. And the attention to detail with the WWoHP attractions and themed areas was easily on par with Disney. I was that impressed with it!

Something worth noting, regarding EVERY WDW Employee - right up to Board Level.....
Rule #1 is that NO ONE is above picking up trash, and dropping it into a can. We witnessed this first hand on a Backstage Magic Tour. Our guide, saddled with 20 Tour Members, took us into World Showcase early. While talking about the American pavilion, without breaking stride, he calmly picked up some trash off the street & deposited into the closest trash can. Not sure he even THOUGHT about it.... seemed like an autonomic reaction :).

Now THERE is a Man that loves WDW.... if only several thousand daily guests felt the same way..... :).

All personal opinion, I'm not right, you aren't wrong....

Ill admit I can be a little messy at home and might leave a little trash here or there, but to do it on someone else property is just rude. People have the mentality of I'm on vacation, someone else can do it for me. It amazes me how little people think about being courteous to others. It goes a long way and can make this world such a better place.

I agree with Empress Lilly, too. We have been going to WDW since early 80's and it was always clean. 2 years ago, while in the queue for Haunted Mansion, we saw papers, wrappers, cans, bottles and tissue on the floor, especially up close to where you enter to ride the doom buggies. I was appalled. The CM's looked bored, and did not bother to pick a single wrapper.
I wrote to Disney when I got home over the current state of "cleanliness" in queues and on rides. Got a phone call, and a letter, and 2 days free admission anytime. However, I did not want to be placated with a "gift". I wanted them to say, "yes, we know it's a problem and will hire more to take of this disgrace". Yea, right! That didn't happen!

But if you clean up your own garbage then Disney will cut janitor budgets because they will expect you to clean up for free and that part of the budget will go into Iger's bonus and not into new attractions.

I don't know if I can allow that to happen or even worse cost someone their job.

Maybe we should think about a little detail....

While we think of the Parks as "Parks"? WDW, on average, has a population of 56,000 people per day. Folks, that's pretty close to the population of the City we live in, in Michigan - a mid sized CITY.

Trust me - our corporate headquarters for a fortune 500 city is WELL cared for. And we have more trash than WDW does.
Just a personal opinion - cram that many humans into that much space, then give them the concept that they are free to act badly because they "paid", and won't generally be back for a good 5 years?

Time to quote Jay Leno.... "What did you THINK was going to happen?" :).

We TOO would like to see an increased effort for park cleanliness.... Just our opinion, this HAS degraded. But (again - our opinion) - a good deal of this has to do with the individuals tossing the trash down in the first place. At a location with a trash can just about every 20 feet :). Really - can we not at least ACT civilized?

Just me - I would love to get an idea of WDW's yearly cost JUST to pick up junk left by people that really don't care. Like any corporation? That price tag will not be THEIRS - it will be OURS.

Again - all personal opinion. I'm not right, you aren't wrong...

Perhaps it's also a case of "monkey see, monkey do". I was at Beaches, Turks and Caicos in February and it was spotless. Even in the kids areas near the waterpark you wouldn't even find a stray straw wrapper. If people are surrounded by a pristine resort area, they seem to be less likely to want to spoil it by dropping litter, chewing gum, etc. If the place already looks like a trash can, they may figure "if no one else cares, why should I"

Just went to Magic Kingdom Saturday, and it poured. Trash is even grosser when it's wet! I had a hard time avoiding stepping on it. No good for my phobia of trash. I just tried looking up what such a fear may be called, but couldn't find anything on it. The search results did pop up with photos of Splash Mountain for some reason...That reminds me, I hate getting on a ride vehicle and having litter be there.

It's basic education at home, yes, there are custodians, but their job is not to pick up after you, their job is to clean and collect from the bins and deposits. They're not your waiter or butler.
The same disrespect that some people show by throwing garbage around, leaving trays at the tables, making messes in the bathrooms, taking 200 packets of condiments and all the napkins, etc...usually extend to treating other people badly.
Because you're paying does not give you the right to make other people's jobs harder, or to yell at them.
Good morning, good night, and thank you are things we sorely need back!
