Orlando Holiday Inn Matches Spirit Airlines Offer
(Orlando Business Journal) -- Holiday Inn Family Suites Resort, located near the Walt Disney World Resort, announced that 550 of its 800 suites will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis on the evening of Sept. 11. And those already holding rooms for that night will receive a free one-night voucher for a future stay. On Aug. 7, Ft. Lauderdale-based, privately held Spirit Airlines offered to give away all available seats on Sept. 11. By 4 p.m. on Aug. 7, the company announced that all 13,400 seats on 90 flights to 14 cities, including Or-lando, were booked for Sept. 11. Terry Whaples, managing partner of the Orlando hotel, says, "Frankly (I) wish we'd acted first, but we should all be doing everything we can to encourage Americans to travel and thank those who do." The resort will host morning observances to watch nationally-televised ceremonies from New York City, Washington,DC, and elsewhere, and then sponsor a day-long Celebration of Travel Independ-ence party. Whaples adds, "There are 2,100 members of the Travel Industry Association, and I challenge them all to find their own way to say `thank you for traveling' to the millions of Americans who have refused to give up this basic right."
