There was a point where I debated about doing some of this live, but we’ve been so busy. Oh well. In any event, this is a two part report. The first part takes us west to Colorado, for a softball trip to the Colorado Sparkler. The second half is a trip east to Florida for a 7 night cruise on RC’s Harmony of the Seas. If we’re up for it, we’ll also be spending a few nights at Universal after the cruise.

We’ll see how I feel, but I may just share a lot of pictures and video. I’m just not sure I’m up for the full blown narration. We’ll see.

PART 1
Day 1- June 25th

Today’s driving plan…Houston, TX area to Raton,NM.

I insisted we leave by 5am and eat our meals and snacks in the car so we could have more daylight hours in more interesting scenery. Let’s be honest, much of driving through TX is boring and it takes FOREVER!!!

We actually made it to the NM border before 2pm MT. We even switched drivers at this point so I could take some pictures. Fun fact…northeastern NM is an extinct volcano field. Capulin Volcano National Monument was the goal for the day, but lots of others as we drove.

Not unexpected (but not pictured) were all of the pronghorn we spotted along the way. We saw several male loners and three herds. Our volcanic destination was also now in view…

It’s right off of the highway, so no going out of our way for this one.

We popped into the visitor center to show our annual pass. I was reminded that it expires on June 30th. Yup…trying to squeeze every last bit out of it! The ranger also had the weather radar playing and warned everyone about the weather in the area.

After that…I drove everyone up the side of the volcano and scared the living daylights out of my loved ones. Nothing like sheer drops and no guardrails to say I Love You! They really didn’t appreciate it when I tried to point out an elk on the way up. lol

Not my picture, but it should give you some perspective on what it’s like going up this thing.

With the younger one’s broken leg, we couldn’t hike, but we got in some pics at the top.

It’s a pretty incredible view up there…

The drive down isn’t nearly as scary, but David asked to take over, since there’s this one single lane section that really made him nervous. You also get to appreciate some of our lovely driving conversation!

The whole area is referred to as the Raton-Clayton volcanic field. It really makes you wonder how crazy this area was when all of these were active.

Oh well, we made our way to our hotel in Raton, which is full of mesas. Hence our mesa and Penske truck view…
10710575-6C42-42AA-8EF7-7CB5297E7ADB.jpeg

We popped into a Dennys two doors down for dinner. The service was ridiculously slow, but I got some Moons Over My Hammy, which made me pretty happy.

73D8936E-5B1B-4B9E-8FE7-891E6E6E8F0E.jpeg

We were only about 6 miles from the Colorado border. We drove that way through a pretty neat canyon, but decided to turn around because of heavy rain. In fact, we woke up the next day to temps in the upper 40s and more rain.

0F991563-508E-48EA-8E2B-A4EAFC4A7A3F.jpeg

Considering it had been 100+ degrees every day in the Houston area and no rain for weeks, this was a pleasant shock to the system. Now time to head into Colorado!

Day 2- June 26th

After a pretty basic continental breakfast in Raton, we packed up in the rain and headed into Colorado. It’s only about 4 hours between Raton and Loveland, but we had other goals along the way. Unfortunately, the rain over southern CO killed a lot of my plans.

- Nothing visible at any of the scenic overlooks around Trinidad, CO.
- Not that Sam could hike much with her boot, but my crazy idea of popping into Great Sand Dunes made no sense with all the rain.
- No point in paying the $250 for the train up Pike’s Peak with the weather and driving the road seemed too dangerous.

We chose to hit up Colorado Springs and check out Garden of the Gods.

Still not a great choice considering visibility and our hiking limitations, but it was free and it was something new to see. So, after checking out the visitors’ center as grabbing a map, we headed in…

Garden of the Gods was ridiculously crowded, so we drove through…took some pics…and moved on.

We made a few wrong turns…

And it was mainly my fault since we were told to stay to the right and I kept suggesting we go left. Oh well, we saw it. I can see how it could feel really neat if you’re able to hike and if weather is better, but it’s also not nearly as impressive if you’ve already visited Moab, UT. It had some Arches NP vibes, but just not nearly as much wow factor.0828A655-683C-44CE-9DB1-A84CB3A2A2B5.jpeg

I have more Garden of the Gods pics from the big camera that I’ll throw into the photo dump at the end, but for now, it was on to Walmart 😂

Sam wanted some adhesive letters for her rally hat and David was hoping to find some sweatpants. It was in the upper 40s, which was downright frigid compared to our triple digit heat at home. We found the letters, got skunked on sweats, but everyone wanted me to buy this…

(Family joke…I didn’t get it)

We kept pushing north, but realized we hadn’t eaten lunch. We stopped at a Qdoba for burritos and quesadillas. We were hoping to try this place called Snooze, but they were closed. Oh well…at least we got to ogle this pretty…

Lunch was ok…not amazing…but we were no longer hangry. We tried an adjacent Target for some sweats…skunked again…unless you count all of the fake plants and crazy candles the girls wanted to bring home. So we hopped in the car and continued to head north. We passed the US Air Force Academy along the way.

The weather cleared by the time we hit Denver, but there was still a lot of haze over the front range. It was a relatively basic drive after this, but at least it didn’t take long to get to the hotel.

Once we got situated in our room, I started working on Sam’s rally hat. It wound up being a waste of time and $, but it is what it is. The lettering and numbers we added in CO fell off before the opening player party and the girls barely wore them.

Oh well, it’s what this team wanted to do.

We were still on the hunt for some new sweats for David and there was a Scheels right behind the hotel. This has to be the coolest sporting goods store we’ve ever seen.

Yes, that’s a full sized Ferris wheel! The huge aquarium was similar to the ones at Rainforest Cafe.

We thought we found some sweats for David, which was great because he was also able to get Ferris wheel tokens for the kids at checkout. The pants looked ridiculous (turned out to be kid’s pants) and had to go back, but the girls had a fun yet semi terrifying ride.

They were lucky. Later on, a teammate and her mom got stuck at the top.

After our less dramatic wheel experience, we had a creepy encounter with a celebrity animatronic.

We explored a bit more before heading out to clean up for dinner and evening festivities.

Everyone thinks I’m kind of crazy for taking pictures of everything, but I really love the mountains so much. So yea, I’m the fool in the parking lot randomly snapping pics.

For dinner…if you want to call it that, we met up with some of the team at this place with all kinds of activities. Ya know, bowling, arcade, ropes course, mini golf, go karts, etc. It was kind of a last minute thing and a bit of a mess, but I think most of the kids had fun. I was happy…I had a fruity drink!

0EC4EC46-5689-48A9-81F9-56E710CB5F77.jpeg

There was some drama that night.
1. There was a fight in the bar area. There was a pretty hefty police presence after that.
2. The Avs won the Stanley Cup that night, so you can imagine all of the locals were pretty pumped.

We spent the rest of the evening eating gross food and trying to take in the sunset.

Heads up- going to try putting in text ahead of inserting pics and video. So, if you don't see pics/vids, it's still a work in progress :D

Side note- part 2 of this trip received its first major alteration. We decided to postpone Universal. Sam needs some extra time for conditioning for club softball tryouts after being in a boot. Assuming she's cleared on the 19th, we will be getting her into the gym while on the cruise to start back with strength training and basic endurance, but she's going to need a few extra days to get in some fielding drills and batting. As a result, we decided to push Universal to Thanksgiving. We're going to hit the parks for a few days before driving down to south Florida to be with family. My parents were booked on a Princess cruise at that time, but rescheduled for a later date. Hey, at least we'll get in some good holiday vibes and hopefully better park weather.

Back to the TR...

Day 3 - June 27th

I started off my day with a totally touristy moment. I had to run out to the car and stopped to snap a pic of the mountains from the parking lot before heading back in.

20FF1D02-2180-4C5C-AAFC-97ED76080E87.jpeg

The front desk manager had come out for a smoke and asked what I was taking pictures of ... because really, there was nothing out of the ordinary for her there. I jokingly told her I was probably going to do a trip report and that the mountains were heavily obscured in haze and rain the previous day. She looked confused...I felt embarrassed. Oh well.

We got ourselves together and went to a nearby breakfast/brunch spot. They were oddly packed for 10:30am on a Monday, but whatever. We had too many plans for the day for me to indulge in a drink, so I got the supposedly Insta-worthy Bloody Mary grilled cheese.

65BBEC4F-8E70-4F55-8563-BBEB9E8C9A51.jpeg

It was really just ok and not really all that Insta-worthy either.

31C4F1CA-B5D0-4AD1-9249-F62D7DDB63A1.jpeg

Sam and David's meals didn't get photographed, so I guess that means they were boring! Kendall got some spruced up avocado toast. It came with a side of goat cheese, but she asked them to swap it for queso fresco instead. They wound up putting both on the plate, the server didn't know which was which, and we had a moment like Tom Hanks in Big with the caviar. At least I got the rest of her goat cheese!

As we were finishing up, I got a message from the dad of one of Sam's softball friends from her previous team. They were also in the Denver area, but playing at an invitational in a different tournament. We'd eventually coordinate a meet up, but I got a good laugh at first. He gave me the sport complex name, which was just noted as "Industrial Park" on their planner. I plugged in "Industrial Park" into Google maps and it came up as only 15-20 minutes away from our hotel. Then I realized I'd been mapped to an actual industrial park. At least I would eventually find the actual fields...40-45 minutes away and closer to Boulder.

1F10A736-0248-4EB1-9081-6D4A2E67318B.png

The opening player party for the tournament was supposed to start around 2 and there were something like 200 teams in Sam's division, so we didn't have a ton of time to play around. We did pop into Target so that David could look again for sweats (nothing) and get some essentials (like lip balm). Sam got ridiculously excited over a cup while we were there.

56BC7EC4-F3A4-42DB-9CAD-87DC4743AB51.jpeg

After last year's opening ceremony parking fiasco in Panama City Beach, I decided arriving early was our best plan. I think it was about 12:15pm when we arrived. Ooops.

88D27E60-03E5-4170-AE75-B6F3E5E89415.jpeg

At least it wasn't all for naught...I mean, we did choose to go so that we could figure some things out to get a head start on next year. When we arrived, they were doing some All Star games. Later on would be more traditional showcases. While Sam had a referral for these (pre-injury), we found out she's too young. This is a big factor in all of our team drama right now. Everything hinges on graduation years. Because she has a late birthday and is after the cutoff, she's a grade behind 97% of her teammates. Oh well...we watched and learned from it.

I will try to keep my gripes about this team to a minimum, but it may seep in here and there. For this day/event, let's just say meeting up and such wasn't well coordinated and the opinion based decisions by some made for a reduced experience for the girls IMO. They decided to go with these team rally hats and skipped out on pin trading, saying it's only for little kids. While I liked that Sam was able to customize her rally hat and wasn't bound by the preferences of other girls, my child would have preferred pins. And contrary to their opinions, nearly every other team we saw had pins, wanted to trade, and thought we were the oddballs for not participating in the standard fun.

A3AF7BD9-B79C-402A-A44F-44B3C8921E33.jpeg

I did give major props to one of the teams from Hawaii. Their custom opening festivities gear was on point!

ed8b1a9d-e730-42c3-9e6d-8d118cbf5bb7-jpeg.652583

Ultimately, opening festivities were a real bust. That's not the team's fault. It was just a bunch of vendors and really nothing else.

We hung around for a bit to watch some of the showcases for scouts, but it’s so dull when your kid isn’t playing. We had plenty of time and daylight, so we hopped in the car and headed to something we enjoyed in the past…

E2E4ADF1-94AB-4707-A578-3163DDF78267.jpeg

Well…after we re-navigated our way. My car nav routed me to an employee entrance in the back…so we went the looooooooong way around.

So, here we are at the arsenal. If you saw the 2019 report, you may recall two things that stood out...

1. The place was shut down, literally the day after we last visited, because of Bubonic Plague in the prairie dog population.
2. We found one lone bison...the real reason we devoted any time to this.

It was really convenient to our end of trip hotel last trip, but this time, it was a bit of a drive...so I made sure to check about potential plague closures. Like really? Who does that! Then again, when I was looking for things to do in Fort Collins the next day, I found a natural area called Prairie Dog Meadows...where apparently, the entire population was exterminated due to plague. As one reviewer noted...you may want to change the name!

Oh well, here we are at the arsenal.

Just like our last trip, the visitor center was not open. But on a positive note, we found some national park style bathrooms that were! Hey that was a big issue last time. After a potty break, it was time to hit the loop.

My phone was doing the bulk of the work with the landscape pics.

Ok, a little out of order, but you get the idea.

I took a lot more pictures on the big camera, which will be in a photo dump at the end of this section. The good news, minus having to put in a volunteer shift at the shelter this weekend, virtually attending a friend’s Elvis vow renewal in Vegas and getting in some last minute shopping...I'm going to have plenty of time on my hands to do it. We're in semi-lockdown mode to try and stay covid-free before the cruise, so lots of time!

Enjoying your TR. I've visited Colorado, and the diversity in altitude in different parts of the state, surprised me. I mean, there are some of the highest mountains out there, and yet, on the other side of the state, there are miles upon miles of flatland. Scanning through your various TR pictures, reminded me of this. Colorado is an interesting state, with plenty to see on vacation.

It really is a study in contrasts. In 2019, we spent a lot of time in the mountains and saw a number of western parts of the state, which I guess would count as high desert. We took the mountain view route into the state this time to make the drive more visually interesting, but for the drive home, we went through the prairies and grasslands. It felt more like Kansas or Nebraska vs. Colorado.

Photo Dump 2 - Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge

This may take several posts. I tend to take more pictures when the weather is better and wildlife is present. I guess I also didn't look too closely at these pictures when I uploaded them. I knew we'd seen some of the bison herd right as we drove in as well as some deer nursing fawns, but I didn't realize that the kids were on it with my camera. So, this is a nice treat for me as well, since I just remember thinking we'd have to make another loop if we didn't find other parts of the herd during the drive. I was also moving (car) for some of these, so they won't be as sharp.

So, back to June 27th...

It was time to start thinking about dinner. With my vehicle not wanting to play nice with Apple Car Play and my vehicle nav being a bit wonky, we decided to map ourselves back to Loveland. After some crazy detours from me taking some wrong turns, we made our way back to the north side. We were interested in pizza, but the place we tried near our hotel was packed with teams and the noise was deafening. After re-navigating the complex's traffic circle (I swear, Colorado may have more than New Jersey), we wound up at a Lazy Dog. Sure, it's a chain, but we'd never tried it and we'd heard they're pretty reliable.

David and I treated ourselves to a couple of drinks...

And one kid actually cooperated for snuggling and a pic...

And then it was food time...

They seated us inside because they thought we might get some rain from nearby storms. We only got some light rain, but a little bit of rainbow and a nice sunset from the clouds.

We didn't have to be anywhere until mid afternoon the next day and we'd be up in Fort Collins, so my evening activities were making plans for our morning/early afternoon. David made us some spiked lemonade and the kids hung out in the pool.
