Nextel to sponsor Spaceship Earth?

My phone works fine everywhere, even in the tunnels.

Really?

I always have issues on the indoor attractions, especially at the Magic Kingdom.

It is not a big deal, I really don't care to take phone calls when I am in the park.

I have friends who's parents use Nextel and they hate wiating for their call to go through... i dont know why they dont ahve their own phone to just beep them....

(I will change over to Nextel come end of school year when my current contract ends....)

I have US Cellular (not quite nation-wide yet) but they have towers in the Orlando area last I checked. I had excellent reception all over the parks, inside and out of rides too. Of course I didn't use it because of roaming fees but I had it just in case someone was to call (Rob or my best friend Will) then I would just use my girlfriend's phone which is Verizon and didn't always have good signal.

I think Nextel would be a good idea as a lot of companies are switching to them and I've heard a lot of good things about them. The one thing I don't like is that annoying "walkie-talkie" sound they make, it gets annoying hearing that all the time in the parks.

Also, I remember reading somewhere that Disney had talked about getting an actual phone and possibly service out sometime, not sure when though. It would follow their electronic line (computer, printer, TV, VCR and the like). Could it be possible that they would go along with Nextel on that too or would it be their own service and not use any other company?

Would this even be possible with the cellular phone service WDC has proposed getting involved with. Granted, they would be pre-paid cell phones, but would it be a potential conflict of interest....OR....could it be part of the deal....they buy bandwidth from Nextel, and resell it?

I was thinking. The end would need to be updated or rehabed because if Nextel were to take over, something would need to be done with the screens with AT&T on them. But that would be a good thing because that stuff never happened.

They just approach Cingular maybe about sponsorship. They're like one of the largest wireless providers now since they've bought AT&T Wireless (I think the merger should be complete by the end of the year). I've been with them for 4 years and have never had a problem with them. Never. I get great reception when I send and receive calls around WDW/Orlando... and that's out of my local calling area since I live in Tampa.

Just a thought.

I still think Microsoft should sponsor, but if a sponsorship with Nextel means a rehab, then I'm all for it.

Oh lord. the ride stops enough now as it is. I can just hear the recording now, "this ride has performed an illegal opperation and will close down." followed by the ride operator pushing Ctrl, Alt, delete :D

It'd be cool to have Apple sponsor, but with Steve Jobs and all.....

Microsoft: "Welcome a board Spaceship Earth XP... Powered by Windows XP..." two seconds latter all anamatronics stop, ride continues to move... " your anamatronic program has performed an illegal operation.... please report your problem to Mircosoft....

Nextel: "Welcome A board Spaceship Earth, now featureing Walkie Tockie Technology..." Aknoying Tone"It all began with..." another tone "here we see..." last tone "here we see earth, now relax as we return by listening to a selection of our favorite ring tones...." heha

Imagine the possible jokes here....

Lets just say that NEXTEL will be VERY BIG throughout the entire WDW resort. A big contract, upgraded communications for Fire, police, and what not.

About 9 count them 9 antennias throughout the property, and about 7,000 "special" radios will be issued.

Just added a antennia in the bell tower at American Adventure at EPCOT. Wouldnt doubt that NEXTEL becomes the sponsor.

I think sponsorship of any kind would help out SSE. Notice the slow but sure decline in Future World attractions through history.
Example:
1983-1993: Horizons is a fine attraction sponsored by G.E. Everything is kept at optimal quality.
1994: G.E. drops sponsorship of Horizons.
1994-1998: Quality starts to decrease, Horizons becomes seasonal.
1999: Horizons closes in its seasonal state.

When did Nextel take over from Verizon in being the official WDW cell phone company? I surprised I never heard that.
When Verizon realized their add campaign wouldn't hold water throughout the WDW complex...

*you're riding SE...trying to make/get a call...nothing is working...and all you can think about is that stupid guy with the glasses goin' "Can you hear me NOW?"*

*different attraction; later.... ...How about now?*

That would make a great commercial:

+ Spinning on Dumbo "Can you hear me now?"
+ Riding on Test Track (screaming) "Can you hear me now?"
+ Top of ToT "Can you hear me now?" *drop*
Finish on Main Street "Can you hear me now?" Camera zooms out to reveal Disney characters around them, they all turn around and start walking down main street towards the castle. Camera moves slowly upward. Voice over and graphic "Verizon Wireless...now the official cellular service of the WDW resort."

I would watch that commercial several times.

Yeah it would be great, you would be getting ready for decent and...blue screen... :animwink:

I never understood why there needs to be sponsors at WDW. Do they not make enough to cover the maintence themselves or is this just to make "extra" money?

nextel is not the WDW official cell phone

Alot of rumors again I see. Nextel is no where around there and everyone I know always has problems with that service on property.
If they were going to be the next sponser they better get some towers there.

I hope SSE gets any sponsor, attracations without sponsors tend to just disappear. I doubt Apple now the MIssion:Space is sponsored by HP two different computer companies in the same park woudl be weird. At least Nextel is a telcom which AT&T isn't really anymore since they've sold off most of their phone businesses. Maybe SSE could get a final scene with people talking in cell phones or taking a picture in Japan on their phone and sending to someone in NY or somethign like that istead of the AT&T stuff that never happened.

Ohhh, I hope not...

I have never seen a company as incompetent and inept as Nextel. Should this happen, I smell disaster for SSE [of course, this could be part of <insert least favorite CEO here>'s plan to demolish all good rides and being able to blame somebody else in the process ("Well, after Nextel hurt Spaceship Earth's image, we had to tear it down").

HP would not let Apple in as a sponsor. This would be worked into the contract with HP to not allow competitors on site at the same time. Same reason why you see no Pepsi products.

As far as people saying that Nextel phones are bad at Disney, that is easy to fix but you are still going to have some problems in the ride areas due to the large amount of wireless components used.

Also if I hear one more Microsoft SSE joke I think I am going to puke...lol :hurl: .

I hope that Nextel does sponsor SSE but there are still other companies out there that would fit the bill also such as Cisco, BayNetworks, Avia, and Lucent. These are the backbone companies of communication now and it would be nice to educate people on how communication actually works on the phone networks and the internet. Just a thought.
