New Solar Powered Trash Cans

How have we not discussed the new solar powered trash cans being tested / rolled out at Epcot!

For those saying “nobody cares about trash cans” - remember Disney has trash can merchandise so obviously somebody cares! Haha. (I may or may not have Disney trash can salt and pepper shakers…. )

my initial thought is - these were designed for large cities where trash frequently piles up in between daily services so a compactor helps out significantly.

For Disney - the custodians who check the trash are also sweeping the sidewalks, checking for trash in the bushes, cleaning off benches, etc. - it’s part of the normal rounds and routines. So I’m not sure how much this helps?

You're right, these cans were designed for major cities. These have been the norm for highly trafficked areas of NYC for about a decade now. I love seeing my city come to my home away from home.

The Disney cans have tech in it that notifies cast members when they need to be changed. The initial feedback from custodial is positive, they like that they can spend more time interacting with guests without having to check the cans every five minutes.

My personal favorite part of them are the foot pedals. Having cleaned the inside of more Disney trashcans than I'd ever want to think about, I always get PTSD touching the trash flap. Not having to touch anything with your hands again is a major plus. Can't wait to see more designs roll out, it's only been World Showcase so far, correct?

Overall these seem like a complete positive change, good job Disney.

Do you have a photo of them? I.don't know what they are!

BlogMickey has a whole article about them, with photos.

So what are the features:
Sends notifications when its full?
Has foot pedals so folks do not need to touch flap?
Please tell me more about these very EPCOTy trash cans. 👍 I am sincerely interested.

They have a built in compactor - so they don’t need to be emptied / checked as often.

You’re right - they are perfect for Epcot Future World (or whatever they are calling it these days…. I think it’s world sarsaparilla now?).

So naturally they would debut in world showcase haha.

Each can is solar powered and compacts the trash so that it can hold up to 5x a normal trash can. They also have built in batteries that will run for "weeks" in case the sun explodes. 🤪 They debuted in World Showcase because the festivals generate a huge uptick in garbage. They're going to expand to the rest of EPCOT, and then throughout the Resort by end of year they claim.

I'm not sure the exact moment cast members are notified, but I'd imagine when the can hits about 75% capacity.

If you push down on the pedal with your foot the flap will open for you to deposit your trash. The ones in NYC also have a handle, I'm not sure if these flaps would still open if you push on them.

Built in trash compactor! Very cool. Trash compactors have been around forever, it’s so great to see them applied here!

A related note…. I do miss the themed trash bins the CM’s would roll around vs. the large plastic Rubbermaid bins that every fast food joint in America uses to haul trash to the dumpster.

There used to be a phrase for that…. Disney details I think? :)

But on the flip side - WDW is still a very clean property - especially considering the number of guests that visit.

This is a good show; both for the guests and CMs.

I am also very happy the still have the 3D medallions on the cans. I saw a post someplace where they went to stickers, I am so glad that was a temporary thing!

I saw them a couple weeks ago. No issues, only concern would be if they do roll out past world showcase, I hope we don’t lose the “in theme” custom paint jobs based on location.

Universal also has them. Or they have at least the one I saw in Citywalk. I can't say I was looking for them though, so there are probably more. These are a great idea! The foot pedal is helpful.

"Disney World will continue to work with Imagineering to ensure that the new cans closely resemble the current lineup of trash cans. Imagineering’s involvement signals that Disney wants the solar cans to hold that same theming as they spread to every corner of the resort." From all of the blogs talking about the new cans. You don't have to worry about that.

The folks that drove this great trash can project, can we get them to talk to the folks involved with the ugly planer and broken ground lighting in World Celebration? ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

I’m not sure if I consider it a 100% win. I think having custodial check trash cans regularly helps with the overall cleanliness of the park.

They could probably be helpful in a few key areas that are high traffic but property wide it could lead to areas being checked less frequently.

I also do have a fondness for the Securr style admittedly. Haha.

They should be equipped with a load siren that goes off when they are full and a sensor with a recording that says hey this is a trash can not a table ---get lost
