New Latina Disney Princess

Because it's media. Children unconsciously and consciously pick up concepts from social media, especially in their development stage. Children are being subjected to more and more media, which means it has become an object of learning. Look up psychology articles about it; there's tons of them.
Yeaaaaaaa.... Still not their responsibility. That's all I'm saying.

How did this become a debate about whether or not Disney has a responsibility to be diverse? Or that it is or isn't their choice what characters they create?

All I said was I like this character. I assume they introduced her because they see the market for her with the growing number of Hispanics in America.

Thank you to the first few constructive responses. The rest just went to a completely different place.

As far as animated princesses go, she's very pretty.

Nah, I agree with you. Though I think she should have her own film, but maybe the spin-off series will lead to a film. Or maybe this really is the next Princess film and Disney is teasing us.
There are no films from Disney starring Elena or focusing on any aspect of her in the foreseeable future. Anything with her and sofia is all direct to dvd and made for TV.

Are you an insider or something?
No I am just someone who knows how to google disney animated film line up within the next 5 years and who tracks animated film rumors religiously. And Elena not once has been apart of any of that. There is never going to be a film put out by Disney for sofia done by Walt Disney Animation, the same will prove true for Elena. They are more like toon disney rather than actual Disney which is again part of my issue with this. If they get a film it would be like a disney junior one which will fade with time (think bambii 2, little mermaid 2, etc). These are not I guess you could say legacy characters.

The point I'm trying to make is that we could still see a Latina Princess in the future and that could possibly be Elena if she is not really in Sofia. Of course I'm wrong, but it doesn't mean we will not a see a Latina Princess within ten years.

I thought so too. And I really like her dress. But I guess I'm somehow wrong for liking her. :(

You are not wrong for liking her. She is very pretty.

My issue is when these kind of topics come up, it becomes a 'Disney should do this' discussion and it bugs me. Claiming having her is a 'step in the right direction' is saying Disney is wrong for not having a certain kind of character. Why are they wrong? Because their stories haven't called for her yet? Most of the stories Disney has done, and is known for, are European/Grimm stories so it makes sense most of them were white. Despite that, Disney has been a very diverse company. Small World, World Showcase, Jasmine, Mulan, Pocahontas, Tiana. Shows like Modern Family is on ABC and things like that. So I just don't buy the 'Disney doesn't cater enough to 'this/or that' group.

As for Elana, she may not become a Legacy character but if she becomes popular enough, there is a possibility they may plan a movie for a Latina princesses. Are there any good legends/stories Disney could adapt for her?

For the record, I'm sorry we're not seeing eye to eye on this topic. You're a member who's posts I saw frequently when I was just a WDWMagic lurker and someone I still have respect for. I'm just incredibly passionate about diversifying the media. I apologize if what I said offended you.

We could see a latin princess film some day. Just again not within the next 5-6 years. And I can tell you with certainty disney isn't making this character to surprise us with her own film. Her design alone tells you that much.
