Though I'm sure that Earl has already posted this at the DIS, it has just made it's way to my inbox that Kong's closing will be moved up to September 8th-ish. There will be an announcement a couple of weeks before it's closure if plans do not change.

Get your last rides in now...

It's a nifty ride, but its time has come.

I hope the next ride installed involves suspension from the ceiling as well.

The "drop" portion makes me whoosy every time but is a cool effect.

Kong is a classic and should not be replaced, yes it is a little dated but it has the best pre show area in USF, I'm sure that there are other rides in need of replacement before kong - also USF has a lot of unused or under used space.
Save Kong !!

I agree it should stay. If it dose get replaced ET and Earthquake will be the only rides left that opened with the park (Hana-Babara and Hichock{sp} supossed to close too). :(

I was upset when I heard Kong was to go, but I would at least get one last ride on my next visit (13th Sept). Now they've gone and moved the dates I don't even get that!

My wife doesn't like roller coasters but love rides like Kong, BTTF, Hanna Barbara etc. Now one of the rides she like is going. I can't believe they are doing this. :( It better be one hell of a replacement, is all I can say!

Kong did not open with the park and I don't think ET did either. Hitchcock did, but I'm not sure about the other two.

Kong was a good attraction. Very well detailed with all the buildings and set pieces, but its time has come. The lines have dwindled down since opening day on this attraction, and King Kong seems like a footnote compared to today's features. While I'm all about having classic attractions stick around, but I think Kong has had its run.

You know what would be cool? A Godzilla attraction. The godzilla that looks like a man in a rubber suit. That would be a tremendous attraction. Godzilla spurting fire at the vehicle as it passes by.

I know if Paul Pressler was running Universal he'd replace King Kong with Godzilla and call it a "new attraction". Much like they do with the dumbo rides nowadays:lol: sorry. Couldn't resist.

This is a little off-topic. But I can't help myself.

We went to USF earlier this year. IMO the entire park needs a rehab. Nothing new in a few years. At the end of the day, we kind of said - Why did we come here? We've seen it all before. I know I am a die-hard Disney fan. Just a little bit prejudice. But at least Disney does things like new parades, celebrations, etc, to change the atmosphere. It definitly appears that they spent all of their money in recent years on IOA and neglected USF. The lack of crowds and lines the day we were there seem to say that the public agrees. We did the entire park - Every ride, by 4 PM.

Back to Topic - I like Kong as a ride, but if it has to go to make room for something new, so be it. They should take out Twister (You stand around and watch it rain and the wind blows - WOW he says sarcastically); update BTTF; put a new show in place of Beetlejuice (Some of the Back Street Boys were in that over 10 years ago); update ET. Should I continue?

I'm not entirely sure, but I think E.T. did open with the park. I went on a soft opening the day before the park offically opened and E.T. was open.

I belive Jaws was closed for several years after trying to operate for almost a year. They ended up suing the manufacturer beacuse it always broke down. We were on it in teh first year and had to come off when it broke down.

I have to agree with you there. Terminator, BTTF, and Mib not withstanding, I have to say the whole park seems lost.

I know that Universal's supposed to be about nostalgia, but theres a line between the classics and the flavor-of-the-decade. Some of USF's attractions straddle that line.

Disney's rides (or at least many of them at MK and Epcot) have a lot of leeway because their material is not based on a movie or tv show that might not be remembered in years to come. Haunted Mansion, Pirates, Space Mt., and others may be dated technological wise, but they can be updated or changed at will because of their classic appeal.

Universal's properties, however, are all based on movies from the 70s, 80s, and so on. In time, some of their movies are forgotten, or leave public consciousness, and the appeal to get people on the ride loses flavor fast. King Kong and Earthquake, to me at least, seem like the forgotten stepchild of USF. I've never seen the 1976 remake of KK, nor have I seen the original, but I do respect its place in movie history. Earthquake I have never seen nor do I know who did the movie itself. While the rides can stand on there own without tie-ins, this is a movie theme park, and theres no room in a movie theme park for forgotten movie based attractions. Unless Universal feels like re-releasing a film in theaters to re-stir interest.

Meanwhile, classic films like Jaws and BTTF are still remembered to this day. MiB will be around for awhile. So will Terminator. I have a feeling that one day (not soon, because of its recent rehab) that Earthquake will be put on the chopping block. And Twister will eventually run its course. Its only remembered for its special effects.

You can bet your bottom dollar Dinosaur will one day be changed because nobody will remember that movie (Heck, I don't even remember the movie, and it came out 2 years ago)

Universal's new overhaul is just what the park needs to become fresh again.

Anyway, thats my two cents.

I went on that VIP tour thing at USF/IOA and I asked our tour guide, she said they closed the first Jaws because no one liked it.

We didn't get to the park until around 10:30 and took a leisurely lunch.

Do you mean that the first Jaws ride was different from what we have now? What changed and do you have any pics?

The ride was as you see it today. It had a slighly different story line and the shark attacks were a little different. However, we never got a chance to finish the ride. It kept breaking down. Then they closed it to rebuild it.

Good analysis Sketch.
