My gosh, the queue BG music is just awesome. I know for a fact I would have been terrified as a kid approaching the mansion with all that eerie music.

The inner courtyard is Madame Leota's garden, hence the crystal balls.

I know they just seem a bit incongruous with the rest of the surroundings but they re not offensive.

Now that the entire project is finished I can say this is an upgrade overall to what was there previously. I know some have some issue with certain parts of it and it became a sticking point as the project progressed, namely the turf and the new shop, but overall I think the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. This is truly a worthy addition to the grand old Mansion, long may it live.

I’d say it looks like the most “pleasant” queue in the park now. Indiana Jones is still all around king. Followed by ROTR if you count star destroyer hangar on as queue which makes sense. A case can be made for ROTR being #1 but the first 3/4 of the queue is so boring. Then it’s probably a toss up between HM and MMRR for next best queue. I’ll give the tie breaker to MMRR since HM’s queue being pleasant will be dependent on good weather. Roger Rabbit gets 5th place.

I do have a lot of love for it but for some reason it didn’t cross my mind. Probably because I always ride at night when it’s very dark and don’t spend much time in the queue.
TBA? It’s mostly switchbacks along the mountain aside from the two little interior scenes and then the salt mine. I’d like to give a shout out to Pooh though.

Winnie the Pooh, Smuggler's Run, Star Tours, and Jungle Cruise have fantastic queues as well. Also TBA and Big Thunder as J4546 stated. And Space Mountain has a pretty great queue too.

Man, forgot about Star Tours. Ok I need to revisit that list. Space? It’s pretty meh until the loading room. Smugglers run is cool but oddly didn’t cross my mind either. It’s kind of boring until you get to Hondo which at this point we’d all rather skip.

That would be cute if that was what he was actually doing. Instead, he was hiding in the corner, wearing sunglasses in the shade, and avoiding any contact with others.
He's not performing any role. He's hiding behind the corner, trying to avoid contact, and taking a little mental nap. Probably just watching the girls go by, at about $20 an hour.
And I can only imagine the elaborate backstory he will pull them into when they ask where the restroom is. Although there are two gift shop CM's already working a few feet away from him at that merchandise kiosk.
In short.... No, that is incorrect. This has not "always been a position at closed shops and attractions". At least not at Disneyland. This is the Disneyland forum, remember, not the WDW side.
At Disneyland, when even major E Ticket attractions close for refurbishment or are not yet open during their construction phase, they don't staff CM's to tell people its closed. Instead, for decades, they put up a plywood wall or green scrim or fabric covered metal barricades and set out a sign that says the ride is closed. And as TDA doesn't staff those CM's for even major E Tickets, they certainly don't staff them for closed gift shops.
So why are they staffing a ride operator to hide behind the corner of a gift shop to wait to be seen and approached?

Or, it's a valid criticism of not the CM, but of the management team that allows him to do that thing. What's his purpose? There's two equally bored merchandise kiosk CM's standing a few feet away from him.
Why would you staff a ride operator to lurk behind the corner of a closed gift shop? That's weird. Especially with the very high labor and business costs it takes to attract and retain that employee in California today.
It's a reasonable, although very minor, topic to discuss on a Disneyland fan board. Par for the course, really.
Why, thank you! Flattery will get you everywhere with me, especially after the cocktail hour. But I can assure you, it's more the former than the latter.
I am a well groomed person, always have been. The good looking part faded with the 20th century I'm afraid, but in my day I was known to keep a full dance card.
Which is why good grooming and appropriate tailoring are so important as the years go by; the 25 year old human body can carry off bad tailoring rather easily, but by your 40's and 50's bad tailoring and cheap clothing can be disastrous on the human form. See websites like The People of WalMart for some good examples of that.As for Disneyland and its once vaunted standards for employee grooming and appearance, that's a rather tragic tale. The kid hiding behind the gift shop isn't unattractive, and I've seen far worse beards on modern day CM's than he has. But his entire persona and body language is reclusive and rather unwelcoming.
He's leaning just behind the corner, wearing dark sunglasses in full shade in late afternoon on an autumn day when the sun is already low in the sky, and he's just sort of.... staring into the middle distance.
Why? Which Haunted Mansion manager or supervisor told him to stand there? What was the original thought of management that staffing a CM there would be useful?
It gives me a good chuckle thinking how and why that kid got told to stand there in the corner!

The two days I was there last week there was always 1 or more CM's standing there. I could be wrong, but it looked like they were trying keep people from going back there behind the cart. For what reason, I'm not sure.It gives me a good chuckle thinking how and why that kid got told to stand there in the corner!
