Mr. Toad's Wild (or not so wild) Trip Report

OK, here we are live from WDW. Got the laptop and the dial-up is working so here we go.

Day 1 (June 3)
==========
Our first ride involved going 480 MPH and zooming up to 39,000 feet and then coming back down. As exciting as it sounds, the plane ride was uneventful except for some "interesting" turbulence we hit.

My wife and I got into Orlando Airport at 6:45PM. My parents picked us up and we went and checked into the Courtyard by Marriot over by DTD for our first night. After getting the luggage to the room, we walked to DTD in search of some food. Ate at the Fulton Crab House. The meal was very good. After dinner we walked around a bit and then stopped at Ghiradellis for some dessert. A little more window shopping and then we walked back to the hotel and called it a night.

Day 2 (June 4)
==========
Checked out of the Courtyard and headed over to the Beach Club Villas. Checked in and found that we would have to wait until after 3:00 to get into the room. We left the luggage and headed over to EPCOT to get our Annual Passes. Checked the EPCOT guidemap and while there is no building for Mission:Space, it does have a text box in the location saying Future Site of Mission:Space. We Walked around EPCOT a bit, saw the street performers in the UK, and headed over to see Figment. We had not seen the new ride before but we were pleased with the changes. It may not be the original but its a lot better than the last attempt.

Rode the monorail to TTC and then to the Grand Floridian for afternoon tea. The tea was good, the scones were delicious and the pastries were great. The lemon pound cake was also good. Stopped in the gift shop and saw a Haunted Mansion edition of Clue so I had to get that. It was time to head back to BCV to get the room. Took monorail to MK and caught the bus back. It was so hard to walk by the MK turnstiles and not go in. Got on the bus and the rain started. It was quite a downpour. After settling in we decided to head back out. Unfortunately, the rain started up again so we decided to stay put. Went to Beaches and Cream for dinner and back to room. Guess we will check out the Haunted Mansion edition of Clue. Then again, the rain seems to have let up as I am typing this so I think we might go over to the Boardwalk.

Tomorrow - Breakfast in the MK.

Day 3 (June 5)
==========
Set the alarm last night but forgot to actually turn it on so we were not at the gate for early entry. Still got there at 8:15 so not a big loss. The park was not crowded. Being in MK made we finally feel like I was in WDW. Since my parents are DVC members they were given a coupon for a one free day rental of Pal Mickey so we stopped at the Main Street Cinema and got one.

Headed for Buzz Lightyear but they had not opened the doors so we did TTA instead. Got off of TTA and there was Buzz Lightyear himself doing a meet and greet with a really short line. Got our picture and an autograph and headed for Fantasyland.

Rode the tea cups (always BEFORE breakfast) and realized it was almost time to head to the Crystal Palace for breakfast. Swung by Peter Pan for Fast Passes and then on to breakfast.

The buffet was great, especially the puffed french toast. Somehow managed to convince myself not to overeat which was really hard. Saw Pooh, Eeyore, Piglet, and Tigger, finished breakfast and off to Adventureland. Got Fast Passes for the Jungle Cruise and headed off towards Peter Pan. Oddly enough we were holding two Fast Passes (which I've done before) but the brand new one from the Jungle Cruise said we could get our next one in 6 mintues. Never saw that happen before.

Stopped by the Haunted Mansion (Pal Mickey said he was scared at one point). It appears that they are doing some external work on the Haunted Mansion as they had some minor scaffolding up with brown cloth covering it. Finally we got to Peter Pan. The line was 45 minutes but the Fast Pass line was about 4 minutes. Those of us in the Fast Pass line got some dirty looks from the standby line. Pal Mickey likes Peter Pan's Flight and told us what to do if we ran into Captain Hook. After the ride we walked on to "it's a small world" (why is it lower case and in quotes in the Guide Map anyway?).

The park was starting to have a bit of a crowd but still far from
crowded. Went and got Fast Passes for BTMRR and then went to POTC. No real wait there and Pal Mickey was upset because he thought a pirate called him a bilge rat (and he's a mouse not a rat!). Went over to Jungle Cruise and had a really good skipper. She made the bad jokes entertaining. Did some shopping (my wife has decided she likes pin trading - I'm doomed) and then went and rode BTMRR. By this point we were hot and tired so we headed back for an afternoon break.

After everyone but me fell asleep I decided to go for a quick swim in the quiet pool. After I got back we cleaned up and headed to EPCOT for dinner. At the International Gateway Pal Mickey was excited to be going for a tour of the world. The lady at the gate was shocked as she had never seen one go off at that location before. On the way in I stopped at the stroller rental and had them upload EPCOT into Pal Mickey. We ate at Chefs de France and the meal was excellent as usual. Afterwards we watched Illuminations (Pal Mickey reminded me it was about to start)
and then headed back to the room.

As for Pal Mickey, to be honest I have to say that at $50 he is an
expensive plush toy with some electronics stuffed inside. I'm sure that after we get home he would see little to no use within a month. The jokes he tells are really corny (Why was Goofy hitting the piano keys with his head? He wanted to play by ear!). The games he plays will probably grow old quick.

Now that I've said all of that negative stuff about him I've come to the conclusion that I will most likely be buying him. I'm not sure why but for some reason Pal Mickey just works for me. It is a clever toy that makes you want to go around the whole park just to see what he might tell you next. I guess it just appeals
to the kid inside of me. At least he will repeat things so my wife and I can share him. :)

And the thing that Pal Mickey said that thrilled me the most? I was playing one of his games called "That's Not Here" where he picks a park and names attractions and you squeeze his hand if the attraction is in the park and squeeze his tummy if it is not. He had picked the Magic Kingdom and was naming attractions - Peter Pan's Flight, It's Tough to Be a Bug, The Haunted Mansion, and then he says...Mission: Space. I just squeezed his tummy and smiled (but it really kills me to know the attraction works but I can't get in yet).

Hmmm, I wonder if he has Mickey's Philarmagic in there? Better go play some more.

Tomorrow - Animal Kingdom

P.S. Let me know if there is anything you want checked out and reported on and I will attempt to check it our for you before we leave.

Day 4 (June 6)
==============
Up early and over to Animal Kingdom for early entry. Headed straight back to Kilamanjaro Safaris. We saw a lot of animals today. Even the male lion was out and about pacing around in plain sight. A really good show.

Walked around a bit and then we headed to AKL for breakfast at Boma. Breakfast was good (as usual) and I drank way too much frunch. Looked around the hotel and then headed back to AK.

Headed straight to Kali River Rapids and got Fast Passes. With time to kill before we could use the Fast Passes we headed to Dinoland. Went on Primeval Whirl and had a blast. I laughed the whole way both at the ride and at my wife and my mother. They screamed the whole time.

We decided to head to Dinosaur but we came across a street show of some acrobatic painters. They were very entertaining. We watched them long enough that we did not have time for Dinosaur so we headed back to Kali River Rapids for our ride. We all got wet as usual but my mom got soaked. My wife and my mom were hot and tired so they headed back to the hotel. I stayed and explored the paths around the Tree of Life. I had never really done this and I was amazed by the paths around
the tree. Saw numerous animals and some really pretty waterfalls. The afternoon rain came early and I was fortunate to have found a "cave" just as the rain started. I sat it out enjoying the rain and the scenery. After the rain I headed back to BCV for lunch (takeout from Beaches and Cream) and some rest. On the bus ride back the skies opened up again and much harder this time. I was glad I left when I did.

Pal Mickey was very active in Animal Kingdom. He has a lot to say about the animal exhibits both jokes and facts. I decided I was going to keep him.

After resting we all headed to the Boardwalk for dinner. We ate at The Flying Fish and the mealwas excellent. We strolled around the Boardwalk until the rain started (again) and then we headed
back to the room. We decided to watch one of the DVDs I brought with me so we chose Forbidden Planet (love those old Sci-Fi films).

Tomorrow - Star Wars at MGM in the morning and the Aqua Seas Tour in the afternoon.

Day 5 (June 7)
==============
This morning it was early entry at MGM. We got there right at 8:00. My wife and father headed to Tower of Terror. My mother and I headed to Tatooine Traders to look for Star Wars Weekend pins. Got some pins and a shirt and headed back to our meeting place, RNRC. Noticed on the way down Sunset Boulevard that there were some walls up on the street. Not exactly sure what they are doing but it doesn't appear to be anything major. I got Fast Passes for three of us (my mother won't ride it) and decided that while we were waiting for them to get back from TOT I might as well ride RNRC by myself. Got the Sweet Emotions soundtrack but it cut out about half way through the ride which was disappointing. Still, the ride was great. Got out of the ride about the same time they showed up from TOT. We didn't have too much time to kill so we checked out a few shops and hit RNRC with the Fast Passes. This time we got the Young soundtrack which I had been hoping for all along. Also got to sit in the very last row. Definately a rougher ride but also more fun.

Next we went and got some breakfast at the ABC Commisary and then on to Star Tours. After Star Tours it was time to head back to get ready for our Aqua Seas Tour at the Living Seas. MGM was not that crowded it seemed. The Star Wars weekend stuff was OK with a number of photo ops if you are into it. There was also a film called Behind the Force: The Saga Continues which we didn't get to see. Maybe I will try to go to it tomorrow.

My wife and I showed up at the Guest Relations window outside of EPCOT at 12:10. Marc (who was a lot of fun) showed up around 12:25 to get the participants for the Aqua Seas Tour. There were 9 people in our group. First we were taken to the backstage area of The Living Seas. Marc pointed out the water treatment facilities and explained the basics of what they did to filter the water. Then it was inside and to the education room. We signed our waivers (just in case) and then got to watch a video about TLS and the aquatic life we could expect to see in the tank. Next was an overview of the equipment. We would each get a wet suit, some booties, a mask, fins, and a vest with the air tank on the back. After the explainations we headed to the locker room to change. Now, if you have never worn a wet suit (and I hadn't) let me tell you, the fit is VERY snug. And they will make you sweat a lot. After getting changed you get to be escorted "on stage" in your wet suits where everyone looks at you like you are something special. We went to the center of the observation area and through a door which led up a spiral staircase to the top of the tank.

They were finishing up feeding the fish so they took us over to see the dolphin tanks. We got to see two of the dolphins (they swam over to see what was going on). We went back out to the main tank and the dolphins followed. Unfortunately, we wouldn't get to swim with the dolphins. We were introduced to our divemaster Dan who was great. We all entered the water on to the ledge (which is the roof of the observation area), slipped into our fins and vests, had our pictures taken, and were given the all clear. Finally, we got to swim in the tank. It was truly amazing seeing all of the fish swimming around us. There are a lot of rays in the tank and it seemed that everywhere I looked I saw one. Some of them even came pretty close to us (some of them are very curious). We also saw the Sea Turtles which are even more impressive when they are swimming near you. The sharks were a little disconcerting at first especially since I kept seeing the same one in our vicinity. However only once did he really get close to us and he was in no way threatening, he just swam by and ignored us. I turned around and he swam by about 5 feet away - it really startled me. But it was really cool to have seen a shark that close.

All too soon our 30 minutes were up and we were called in. We got out of the gear and walked back down stairs, through the observation area and back to the locker rooms. Getting out of the wet suit was fun as they really become like a second skin. I felt like a giant banana being peeled. After a nice, hot shower and we all gathered again and went back up to the Education Room. We filled out a questionaire, got our shirts, photos, some stickers, and we each got a Finding Nemo card since the movie just came out. They let us out into the main area on the lower level of the Living Seas and one hydrolater trip later we were back outside on dry land.

This was one of the best experiences I have ever had at WDW or anywhere else. I expect that I will do this every time I come down here from now on (at least until such time as I get SCUBA certification and then I will dive the tank). Anyone that has any interest in seeing the fish up close should look into this program. The equipment is very easy to use and you float on the surface the whole time. As a matter of fact, it would be very difficult to dive below the surface as the equipment is so bouyant that it will pull you back to the surface no matter what you do. The swim was basically effortless. The group included 5 adults and 4 kids with the kids ranging from age 8-16. The wet suits are sized from Small to XXLarge to accomodate just about everyone. The hardest thing you have to deal with is convincing yourself that it is OK to breathe with your face under water. It really is a freaky sensation until you get used to it.

We went back to MGM for dinner at the Prime Time Cafe. We had a great server who made the dinner fun. I ended up being in trouble for having my elbows on the table and for setting the table wrong (OK I did that on purpose). The food was really good. By the time we were done it was pouring out so we headed back probably for the night (my wife was exhausted).

Tomorrow - MK and EPCOT (I think).

sounds you had a great time

why didn´t they let you swim with the dolfins??

is it for some special reason ?

I totally miss mr. Toads Wild ride in The magic Kingdom! i don't think that they should have stopped this ride! Many people inculding myself have memories on the ride that are brought back once on the ride again! I am very upset that it is gone i hope maybe they will bring it back or sumthing! About 1/4 of the main tank is reserved (and barred off) for the dolphins. They also have a smaller area off the main tank that they can go to if they want. They keep the gates between the two areas open so the dolphins can come and go as they please. I believe they said the dolphins can get territorial and so they don't mix them with the rest of the tank.

Also, they offer another program called Dolphins in Depth where you get to interact with the dolphins (assuming the dolphins want to interact with you). We originally wanted to do this program but it was booked everyday we are here. They only take 8 people a day and it is apparently very popular. I am not sure how many they will take for Aqua Seas but the sign up list looked like it might accomodate 12 (we had 9). Aqua Seas is not that well known yet so it is easier to get into.

Day 6 (June 8)
==========
Sorry, I missed posting this yesterday. It was a busy day. :)

Early morning at MK so we headed straight to Tomorrowland. Buzz Lightyear was just opening so we went in for a spin (I did horrible). We decided to go Fast Pass Space Mountain but when we got there the wait was posted as 10 minutes so we got in line instead. One bumpy but fun ride later we landed back on Earth and headed back to Buzz Lightyear. Still not much of a line so we gave it another try. This time I scored 293,000 which is my best score but I was disappointed that I missed the next ranking (Space Ace?) by 7,001.

We wandered into Fantasyland and rode Snow White's Scary Adventure, the Carousel, and "it's a small world". We got Fast Passes for Peter Pan and went for some breakfast at the Main Street Bakery. One cherry danish later and I was ready for some more. With time to kill before Peter Pan I suggested the Haunted Mansion (which I will always suggest even if we just got off of it) so we went for a trip through the mansion. Finally, we headed to Peter Pan. For some reason my wife has gotten into autographs this year so we saw Snow White by the old Skyway station so the two of us went and did the autograph/photo thing before riding Peter Pan. After Peter Pan we met my parents again and they decided to head back to the room. My wife and I headed to Mickey's Toontown Fair to find Minnie Mouse. We went to the Hall of Fame and got our picture with Minnie and met Chip and Dale (they were playful as usual). Then we headed to the Judge's Tent to meet Mickey. After meeting Mickey we noticed that a storm was rolling in, so we hopped on the train and got off at Main Street.

As fate would have it there was a Meet and Greet going on by the train station so we stopped for more autographs (I kept an eye on the clouds as did the character handlers). We saw Dopey and Pinocchio before the rain started. We headed into Exposition Hall to get out of the rain and to pick up our Mickey & Minnie pictures. Inside we met Gov. Ratcliffe, Stromboli, Gideon, the fox from Pinocchio (forgot his name), Princess Aurora, Snow White, Peter Pan & Wendy, and Cruella Deville. By the time we were done the rain had slowed down enough for us to leave for the hotel.

After we got back, I ventured out myself to MGM to get more Star Wars pins for my friends. I just missed the boat so I walked to MGM for the first time. The walk was not too bad. Once I got the pins I decided to stick around for "Behind the Force: The Saga Continues", a behind the scenes look at Attack of the Clones. I had about an hour before the show so I went and rode The Great Movie Ride which had just opened today. The ride is basically the same. The script seems good and I was glad that I got to ride it while I was down here. After TGMR it was Star Wars time. The film was good but I wouldn't be surprised if it is on the Attack of the Clones DVD, it was that type of film. Still, it was very enjoyable for a fan of the movies. Next I did the Animation Tour which I loved. We heard about Brother Bear (due out in November) and got to see an animator draw one of the new characters from the movie. After Brother Bear they will release Home on the Range followed by My Peoples sometime after that.

After the tour I had an interesting discussion with our guide about the Disney/Pixar relationship. No inside information, just discussing our feelings/opinions one it (and on Finding Nemo).

Finally, made a quick exit from MGM and back to the hotel to meet everyone for dinner in Japan. The meal was great but I got some odd looks from my family when I ordered the edamame as an appetizer (the sushi they expected). I ate way too much but everything was so good.

We finished the night with a round of mini-golf at Fantasia Gardens. We ended up playing the outside course (The Fairways Course) and I won by a stroke.

Tomorrow - AK and the Backstage Safari.

Day 7 (June 9)
==========
Got up early to get over to AK by 8:15 for the Backstage Safari. We were met by Christopher who would be our tour guide for the morning. After checking in our group of 15 we went backstage to begin the tour. Now when I booked this tour they told me it was "the tour where you are guaranteed to see no animals" so I had no expectations of seeing animals. Christoper asked if we had any questions before we started so I asked the obvious one: "How's the baby elephant doing?" He told us that the baby is doing great.

They loaded us into two vans and drove us over to the African elephant house to see where they are kept. On the way we drove by the AK imagineering buildings. Christopher asked if anyone had any idea on what they may be working on? I immediately gave the right answer (Expedition Everest) and he told us what he knew about the ride which was basically what was in the press release. According to him the ride will be over near KRR on the parcel of land across from Dinoland. The bridge they are building is one of the early phases of the project.

When we arrived the first thing we see are elephants. OK, so maybe we will see an animal or two on the tour. Wait what's that over there? YES! It is the baby elephant! :sohappy: I have to say that he is probably one of the cutest things I have ever seen. And he looks very small compared to his mommy and aunt (even if he is up to 309 pounds). Apparently, we were one of the first tour groups to get to see him. OK, so now I'm thinking the tour rocks and is definately worth the money.

After Q&A we walk next door to the White Rhino barn. The keeper for Sampson tells us that he is sorry but he doesn't think he can top the baby elephant. So he tells us about what they do with the rhinos and about how they train the animals to allow them to do many things like taking blood samples without tranquilizing the animals. He then takes us around back to show us Sampson, the rhino he works with. They gave Sampson some hay and since he was in a receptive mood we got to pet him. Hmm, two stops, two animals. I think the guy that booked the tour misled me :lookaroun (not that I'm upset about it).

Time to move on to the shipping and holding area. Once there we got to hear about they do there and why and then over the top of this really high fence comes a giraffe head. We were introduced to Ashanti and got to see how much he likes to eat carrots. We also got to see how long his tongue was when he got some water to drink. He kept sticking it out at us - it was hilarious.

Next stop was the Nutrition Center where we got to see where they store some of the food and where they prepare the food. This was the first stop where we did not actually see an animal. When we left the building he pointed out a framework structure in a field that was being worked on that had some fake rockfaces on it. To the best of his knowledge it was part of the Dinoland/Asia bridge.

After nutrition it was on to the labs/surgery area. They were checking out one of the rats from the Pocohontas show in the on stage examination room so we got to see it from the backstage side. We talked with one of the lab people that was working on doing some blood counts, saw some x-rays in one of the operation rooms, and then headed to the education room.

In the education room we got water, granola bars, and brownies. The brownies were absolutely fabulous. They talked about some of the activites they do for the animals to keep them alert and entertained and then a handler came in with a Cuckatoo. We couldn't touch the bird but we got to see it up close. They also gave us a copy of the Animal Kingdom Field Guide which gives info on all of the animals and plants in AK.

Then we moved on to the final phase of the tour - a personal safari on Kilamanjaro Safaris. We got to walk to a special loading zone and bypassed the entire line (much better than Fast Pass) and then instead of the normal attraction script we got a personalized guided safari by Christopher and our driver seemed to go much slower when we went past the animals. Of course, I didn't know about this part of the tour so I didn't bring my camera - DOH! All of the animals were out close to the track and then the rain started. We got to see giraffes and tommies running for cover and the elephants were in the water right next to the path. Event the lions were out in the rain. We got stuck behind two other vehicles for about 15 minutes at the lion area because something was on the road and would not move. A truck with two handlers came out and they coaxed the animal off the road (not sure what it was since it was just out of our sight). When it was all over we were given a special Backstage Safari pin which made my wife really happy and they sent us on our way.

As a side note, I asked Christopher if he thought they would ever build Beastly Kingdom. He said that the only thing he was aware of that they were doing in AK was Expedition Everest and that would be for 2006. He had not heard anything concerning the fate of Beastly Kingdom or about anything else going coming to AK.

After getting back we were hungry since we had no breakfast so we went to The Nine Dragons for lunch. The meal was very good, much better than the last time we ate there. After lunch we walked to Future World (well I wobbled around because I ate way too much) and met Geppeto, Donald, Friar Tuck. Test Track was out of Fast Passes, the Stand-By line was 90 mintues, and the Single-Rider line was 30 minutes so we skipped it. I insisted we look at Mission:Space and there was a crowd of people standing around wishing they could get in (but they were all told sorry). After pulling myself away from the lure of that building (even my mom said the building looked impressive) we went to Ellen's Energy Adventure which I had never actually been on. I found it entertaining but a bit long. After this everyone else decided to head back so I went to The Living Seas to watch the fish. When I got there they were just finishing the last dive of the day. After my Aqua Seas adventure the other day I found it difficult to be on the dry side of the glass. Watched the fish for 40 minutes and then left for the hotel as it was 6:00 and they were going to be closing TLS.

Got back and convinced everyone to head to MK since it was open late. The park was packed! We took the train from Main Street to Frontierland hoping to ride BTMRR but it was closed due to technical difficulties. So we went to ride the Haunted Mansion but there were no Fast Passes and the wait was listed at 40 minutes. So we went to Adventureland and rode Alladin's Magic Carpets. We checked out the Jungle Cruise but the line was 40 minutes (again no Fast Passes) so we walked on to POTC. Came out singing "Yo Ho, Yo Ho, a pirate's life for me" (as usual) and went back to the Jungle Cruise. Now I know it had been less 40 minutes (more like 15) but the line was gone so we walked on to it, too. Had a great guide and he actually made the jokes funny.

The parade was over so we got some candy on Main Street and headed back. Stopped at Beaches and Cream for some take out and then we called it a night.

I must say that for some reason in all the many trips I have made to WDW I have never done any of the tours before this trip. This trip we have done two and they were both fabulous. Well worth the money we spent on them. I would highly recommend the Aqua Seas tour to anyone interested in marine life and the Backstage Safari to anyone interested in animals in general.

Tomorrow - Nothing planned so we will have to see what happens.

No problem. It is helping me out by forcing me to keep a journal of what we are doing. This will be great to look back on in the coming months. And my wife is also happy to have to record of our trip and making the wife happy is always a good thing :).

Glad that everyone is enjoying it (I was afraid I was being too wordy).

No, keep it up. Just try to watch what you eat. :lol: Very good report. So many things... Aqua Seas Tour at the Living Seas, Backstage Safari. Also Pal Mickey. It seems you weren't in your room at BCV very much. Is that extra expense worth it in your opinion?

I have a 5 year old who is a total animal lover. Do you think she would enjoy the backstage safari? Or is it geared more toward adults. I'm just wondering if it would bore her. She would love seeing the rhino and baby elephant, but I don't know about the rest of it.

It has been a great trip but my good eating habits have definately been thrown out the window :). As for BCV, even with everything we have done we have actually spent a decent amount of time in the room. Sometimes it is just one of us and sometimes it is all of us but the Villa is definately getting used.

As for the extra expense, well I have to be honest that we would not spend the extra money to stay here. My parents are DVC members so we are staying here with them on their points. They made sure when they bought their points that they would have enough to bring people with them when they came and we end up getting to stay at the DVC properties a lot because of that. Once my wife is out of school I hope to be able to buy our own points.

I'm not sure if there is an age limit on the tour but I do think that it is geared more towards adults. Other than seeing some of the animals (which is not guaranteed) I would think a 5 year old would be bored for most of the tour which does last around 3 hours. I could definately see teenagers enjoying the tour. There is mostly a lot of talking at each stop - the animals are sort of a bonus. We did not have any children on our tour (not even teenagers).
