OK, I missed starting this yesterday due to a problem getting connected with the High Speed Internet at the Boardwalk but everything seems good now.
A brief recap of the the trip so far. We decided to be adventerous this year and took the AutoTrain. The trip from NJ to VA by car thankfully was uneventful. We (my parents, wife and myself) had never travelled long distance by train so we didn't know what to expect. Turns out that we loved the trip. The train wasn't that full so we were able to strech out when we wanted to. The food was also decent - better than the airplane food I am used to when travelling.
We arrived at the Boardwalk Villas around 9:30 AM on Sunday (5/16) and checked in. With time to kill until our room was ready we ended up going to the Dolphin Fountain for some food (OK, I went for the milkshake). After lunch we took the boat to MGM so I could get my Star Wars pin and shirt. Saw stormtroopers walking in the park by Star Tours - where are the rebels when you need them anyway. Also saw A Tusken Raider, an ewok, Darth Maul, Queen Amidala, and Jango Fett. After a successful mission to Tatooine Traders we just walked a bit (a little worn out from traveling so we decided to avoid the rides). On the way out we met the Mayor and I was made an Honorary Hollywood Fire Chief (complete with ribbon!).
Went back to the hotel got our room (and then switched to another room) and then rested until we got hungry. In search of food we headed to EPCOT and went to the lounge in Japan. I got sushi while everyone else got tempura. Tried a Mount Fuji to drink and it was very tasty. Would have had a few but I wanted to walk afterwards. After dinner we watched Illuminations and then headed for Future World since EPCOT had extra magic hours last night and was open until Midnight. Rode Test Track, Spaceship Earth, and Journey Into Your Imagination. We skipped Mission: Space since my wife was feeling so-so and I didn't want to risk losing the sushi.
Some observations:
The Boardwalk Villas are nice but for some reason I prefer the Beach Club. Just a personal preference.
The extra magic hours at night are great. Hope they decide to go with it permanently. EPCOT open until Midnight is great BUT most of the stores were closed. Would have loved to have more time to shop. Also, this meant that most of World Showcase was closed. Still, I am really looking forward to MK being open late.
And so ends day one at WDW.
