More Disney Fun with Social Media (pics included!)

Im sure these photographers are getting some kind of royalties for their work. I highly doubt they did this out of the goodness of their hearts. This actually looks like an advertisement for the Disney photo packages you can get if you wanted to hire a professional photographer to take your pic around Disney.

Do you do you your job out of the goodness of you heart, for no money? Probably not. So what if these people are making a buck or two, or free passes for utilizing their hobby or talent.

This could be like the moms panel and they do not necessarily get paid right? Just a trip to the park, take some pics, see ya real soon?

Maybe I'm not catching this right. It's a Disney website that features a select group of fan/photog's work in a central location. Where does the social part come in? Did I not click on something that I should have? Did I miss something? I think I'm missing where this is "social".
It's on Tumblr which is a social media site. It's become a popular way for artists/photographers to share their work and there's easily a 100 or more Disney related blogs on the site. I'm willing to bet the OP knows very little about Tumblr and how it works.

I have a strong feeling this is the case. Disney probably pays for their "work trip" to take pictures. Then I would guess they are giving an all-expenses paid family vacation whenever they choose during the course of the year. It's a great way for Disney to get rights to talented photographers' pictures for very little. But given that they have pinpointed photographers who are Disney fans, the pay off to the photographer is probably worth it...

I don't know even know what Tumblr is. LOL! I've never heard a podcast either (that I know of). I think I'm more simple than all that. Like with the dolls I collect I have a "home" club I visit every day then maybe 1 other I occasionally look in on if I'm looking for something. Same with this. WDWMagic is "home" with 1 other site I'll look at for specific stuff I'm looking for. I don't do all the other stuff because I don't have time and/or need. So I'm the first to stand up & say I'm not super familiar with all the social media outlets. LOL!

I think what I dislike about mommy bloggers and some other fan forums is how Disney plays and twists those people to suit their agenda in whatever virtual space those people exist in. The Mom's Panel, judging by the regurgitated lingo responses you see, are like regular people faced puppets. Understandable. It's Disney's website. The pictures thing, yeah these are people hand-picked by Disney to feature, but they seem to be people that did what they do before Disney approached them. So it doesn't feel like its Disney twisting more puppets onto their hands. Yet. I won't say it can't go that way. But it's not like Disney is twisting these photog fans to preach the pixie dust agenda all over the various interwebs in an attempt to control the material. It feels more like they're tapping some talent to produce a new feature Tumblr spot that isn't passed off as anything but put togethwr by Disney. Doesn't Disney also have their own little spot on YouTube?

I haven't visited Tom's blog in a bit (remember, I don't have time) but from my recollection he doesn't mince words if he thinks Disney is off the mark on something or if he dislikes something. I can't say if that's changed or not for certain but the fellow I used to know who posted here wasn't much different from the rest of us. I could be wrong. He's just found a way to do what he loves more and more publicly. Ya know?

Of course I could be totally wrong about all this because, like I said, I don't frequent other media outlets in order to know any better. I'll be the first to own my naive-ness when it's called for. LOL!

Think of it this way, it's like Twitter but with pictures instead of words (you can have text posts, but primarily it's photo based). It's hard to push an agenda when all you're posting is photos. I see no issue with Disney giving people a venue to display their work that they otherwise would not have. I give them credit for obtaining the rights to these photos through the photographers themselves rather than just sharing images from many existing Disney blogs on Tumblr.

And I just had a crash course on what Tumblr even is. Lol! Maybe some day I'll be sophistication-ified to fully grasp these concepts. So funny in a forehead smack way!

Tumblr is a place where lonely college kids and teens spend their abundant extra time.
The vast majority of the content on the internet is created for or by lonely college kids and teens. Were it not for them and their virtually limitless amounts of angst, the internet would collapse.

I bet it's like 90 percent and butts, 0.127 percent Disney and 7 percent cats. The rest is "everything else."

Other than , butts, Disney, and cats, is there truly anything of meaning in this world? I submit the answer is "no."

Oh, boy....
This oughta be interesting...

And I could've guessed who the first reply would be..

BTW, I actually would hope the photogs were paid (one of them actually supposedly won a Pulitzer Prize, no that wouldn't be anyone who posted here) as they're talented. But I find the whole thing odd. How were they picked? Was there a contest? How long did this take place? Or is this ongoing? Or did Disney just 'select' people it felt fit an agenda (watch the video on the Disney Parks Blog with the guy talking about shooting Disney Princesses ... wait, that doesn't sound right!)? ... What exactly is the purpose? And they talk about photogs from around the world, yet it appears they're all from either NYC, Florida, SoCal ... or Indy. Not exactly representing the world.

Yet again, it appears Disney is mindlessly reaching out to a small subset of the fan community in hopes of .... ??? Yeah, I don't know either. If they're trying to grow the business and the brand, then I'd suggest there are far better ways both in social and mainstream media. ... Much like Mommy Blogger Brigade or the Insidears, it just seems like they sit at their computers and do searches on what's 'trending' with Disney and say 'we need to go after these people' with no rhyme or reason.

Tumblr is a social media site for photos. The Disney Parks Blog, which links to this Looking Glass site, is social media. Obviously, one member of this new endeavor is heavily involved in blogs and social media involving Disney, another one's bio states that his clients have included Disney. Etc.

I do see it as kinda a win/win in a way. Don't know much about the other photogs listed but I know the "Tom" who wrote trip reports here back when there weren't that many and I always enjoyed his photos. He was never anything but nice to me so I can't say anything bad about the guy. He's a life-long Disney fan and found a way to pair his hobby (photography) with his favorite place to escape. I know a lot of his pictures used to be taken at night because he'd linger after the park closed to shoot. Maybe his granting Disney the use of his pictures gets him further guest-free access to shoot more. Definitely a scratching of each other's backs possibility. No? Maybe it's a way for each of these people who enjoyed shooting at Disney parks before any notoriety was gained to further their shooting opportunities. Furthermore, who wouldn't jump at the chance to get compensated to do something they love and would be doing every chance they get anyway???

I don't want to make this about Tom because: 1.) I like him and; 2.) that's not what this is about, it's about what is Disney's whole purpose here.

As a shareholder and guest who knows how cheap the company is in so many ways, I'd love to know how much they're spending on this latest social media endeavor and frankly where is the ROI to shareholders. Can it even be quantified? Plenty of talented people take great pics at WDW, especially in the era of digital photography and PhotoShop. There's none of that loading the Nikon with a 36-roll of Kodak and snapping. It's a whole ldt easier for anyone to take a great shot today when you can try for 90 minutes until you get it exactly as you desire.

I don't guess I see this project as something where Disney is manipulating social media as much as they're taking advantage of a crazy good opportunity to tap some seriously awesome photographers for material they didn't previously have. If the photographers benefit from it, be it monetary compensation or travel comps, then good for them. If Disney wants to use their photos they should be compensated in some way.

I do find it interesting the way Disney reaches out to all these little fan groups...be it the Moms like you get on certain fan forums, photog hobbyists who have their own little realms, etc. Interesting.

Ah, but many will work for 'free' when it comes to Disney. Or simply for a free week at the Grand Flo or BW or BLT.

I'm very interested in what the deal was here and hope Tom chimes in. If not, I'll contact him in private and make fun of his socks until he drops a post in.

@WDW1974, I getcha. You know that. ;) I agree, what would be the purpose of this and what benefit is Disney seeking? I'm guessing tumblr is a bit of a different target for marketing (considering its mostly comprised of -n-hineys). If Disney is looking to recruit photographers that would be a mighty strange way to go about it. Curious...

Oh I know this thread isn't about Tom (although he might blush if we let him think it is). If/when ya talk to him tell him the Sweetpee said hello. I only mentioned him by name in my posts because he's the only one I can say I'm familiar with. Can't speculate on the others.

Very interesting all the way around so thanks for bringing the link over. If that stuff didn't get posted here I'd never see it. :p

Whats your point?? Did you even read what I had to say? I said I was sure they did get royalties. Go troll somewhere else.
