As most of us know: The original purpose of Walt Disney World was to be a prototype design of the future of American cities. The monorail was a key component because of how it is a form of mass transportation that delivers a superior commuting experience while blending seamlessly into the surrounding environment.
E.P.C.O.T. only....

Edit: Missed the response before mine.

Transportation certainly was an afterthought for most resorts. But, they've done a lot to improve the bus system in the past 5 - 6 years, imho...mostly station upgrades, but they do seem to be taking it more into account. I really like the bendy busses too. Very comfortable rides, and that extra capacity is lovely.

And, tackling the snarl that was DTD was a fantastic spend, imho.

I would love to see an expanded transit system, but it's just not practical, financially or even physically in some respects.

And, if I was to choose one, the current monorail designs are not something, as an operator, I'd want to maintain, much less expand. The largest issues being the fact they are Imagineer designed busses on square concrete that look cool (even though Gurr is my favorite imagineer)...vs something designed more as a mass transit system, to include forethought into what happens when things go wrong.

The difference between designing a dark ride omnimover, or a "toy train" setup for a theme park (which, again, all respect to Gurr, is what he was good at, REALLY good at, but even he'll admit he was more of a seat of the pants tinkerer till it worked sort...who liked to learn from mistakes) is a slightly different set of skills and talents than what is required to plan a reliable transportation system with appropriate failsafes/failovers/evaculation plans.

Staying on the ground in the first place is a nice start...
They could add an evacuation walkway to one side of each Monorail beam and blend it in by using materials that are of a high architectural quality

The first constructive comment you've made since joining.

And, yes, you are right, they could. Good idea!

Cause that's gonna work real well with that parts that go over water.... See monorail evac where they were stuck between the Contemporary and the TTC... There are parts to the monorail line that can be too high/over other hazards that would not allow for evac walkways. Sadly, what is in place is the best you're going to get.

Nine pages about monorails and no one has posted the song from the Simpsons? You're tearing me apart, WDWMagic Forums!

Also, how in the hell did this get to nine pages so quickly? I left the other day and it was at three.

That's when I saw it and was like.... oooooooh! yes that makes sense.

Are you palnning on directly connecting these to the beams bc if so I can't see this working for several reasons including the fact that everyone would get fried by the live electric beam.

Just like people get fried every day by the various subways around the world? The beams have the same protections around areas where people are "supposed" to be regularly, for maintenance or other reasons.

If they built more of the Monorail system: They should redesign the look of the columns and beams so that they are a lot more architecturally appealing, for example: each column could be a Greek or Roman column; or possibly a modern or futuristic look. Also, for safety add an evacuation walkway to one side of each beam. And of course design the suspended walkway and railing so that they are also visually appealing.

If the bus system is the way of the future :(. We should be using a bus system of the future. I could get on board with this bus. Get it,. board, bus :hilarious:

I'm a monorail guy and would be happy with just updated trains...

We have not forgotten Disney's history, but it's very likely that the current management has. The company has become more and more driven by profit and stock price in recent years.

That IS disappointing. The thought of Disney becoming this really makes me sad, but I still don't accept that this way of thinking is widespread, and hopefully its just a means of surviving a hard time. Disney does take gambles, like they just did in Shanghai. They're history is a history of taking chances, when they take the right chance the money follows. My original post wasn't meant to be taken literal, and I never put a date on anything. I was coming down from a recent vacation-high and found myself relishing the property and its history and stories and trying to envision what the next 50-100 years might look like. Unfortunately I never got any genuine responses to the heart of that point. The truth is none of us KNOW what the next 50 years hold and thats exciting in itself, especially for a company like Disney who has paved the way for theme parks. I can't wait to see the property hold 4 strong, world-class theme parks again, and what they might imagine next for transportation.

Another Bay Lake Tower kinda proves everyone right on here, wheres the imagination in that?! even the name is unoriginal, sounds like an office park :(

I have heard you. I've tried to be polite and diplomatic about it. Yes, I would love an expanded monorail system but I'd also like a Disney that isn't solely driven by profit and milking every last dollar out of the guests without reinvestment.

You want to blue sky this, fine. Go ahead. Thats your prerogative.

This post wasn't intended to be rooted in reality, it also didn't contain any timeline. If I didn't make that clear I apologize. I appreciate the statistics you shared as well. :)

The construction of Monorails is a deep political battle. A monorail that is built with safety in mind and beautiful aesthetics is one that can redevelop chaotic and dysfunctional inner cities into economic engines of change. So sadly, Disney is politically being bullied from showcasing what could be. What a Disney Monorail offers it's commuters is a greatly positive perspective on the world. It's just like what the movie Tomorrowland said: "they made the commercial for the future but they never built it"

APPARANTLY!!! LOL

Is that the understatement of the week! I was really getting pulled in for a minute, I just get frustrated when a few people pretend to represent everyone or to know the future. It's such a good point that anything at Disney really only needs to add to the story, even if it doesn't function ideally for what it was intended. They wouldn't not build Thunder Mountain because the wait was too long or change the train to a higher capacity coaster car to save money. I do think most of the ones arguing were going from facts though, they weren't just arguing because the hated the monorail or to talk trash; MOST of them lol. Adding another 5 miles in the next 50 years in the EPCOT area is still reasonable to me.

I like solutions instead of just saying NOPE CANT TOO EXPENSIVE. I triple like this comment.
