I've heard it cost around $1,000,000 a mile when the monorail line was originally built in the late '60s. Unless major improvement have been made to lower production cost of the cars and track I don't see an expansion of the line coming anytime soon.

Exactly. No new rails coming. All additional $$ is being put into Cutter bug spray which is "complimentary" to guests.

...like the monorail?

As mentioned before, buses and boats are far more effective.

The monorails have already outlived their lifespan. It's a fun ride, but they'll have to cannibalize them to keep them running. Parts aren't exactly plentiful for those things... Unlike buses and boats.

Tip: If you decide to connect all the resorts to a monorail yourself, it will take more than 6 bags of concrete. Learned that the hard way. I also think even with the correct amount of concrete, it may have taken me more than one night. Something to keep in mind, cuz Disney sure as hell ain't doing it.

As long as they are beholding to stockholders and they can use buses that have more guest per hour capacity with a lower operating cost I (sadly) would highly doubt it. Would it inspire more wonder and ambiance...yes. Will they spend money on it when they can do it cheaper...nope. It's not about a "great big beautiful tomorrow" anymore...that died pretty much with Walt and Roy and each passing year we get farther from it.

and I for one appreciate your (original poster) enthusiasm...

I understand what you are saying, but, we all seem to forget that this idea was introduced, at least, via Disney about 60 years ago. If it had proven to be the transportation answer of tomorrow, cost wise and efficiency wise it would have replaced other forms of transportation years ago. It is a novel, fun idea that is more a theme park attraction now then a real workable external system. Yes, I know that there are some cities with the system in place and most of them actually used them for the novelty and not the practicality. It was a nice idea, all forward thinking and all that... but, it never became a practical solution to the urban problem. Even Disney had to add the Seven Sea Lagoon Ferry's because the monorails couldn't keep up with the demand. It was a thought of what the future would be, back then, but, didn't end up being anymore realistic then mass transit shuttles to Mars. I'm more puzzled as to why the People Mover concept didn't catch on in a much broader sense then it has.

I get where you are coming from as well...totally. BUT if Disney were really interested in pioneering and inspiring then they would look to pioneer solar or electric instead of diesel in order to set the bar as they tried to with the monorail...at least that is how I see it.

Money rules the world and that is what we are dealing with here. For a small inconsequential thing like a short Monorail setup, it was fine, but, with the growth of and expansion of new areas on the property, it would be cost prohibitive to play bar setting with what is actually a utility service and not an attraction. The monorails are both, but, are not cheap enough or flexible enough to spread throughout the property. Buses are current affordable solutions to immediate problems. If someday solar or electical become cost effective.. that's what will happen.

I was just wondering and kinda hoping that Disney might make a monorail infrastructure investment a part of their reinvestment into EPCOT that is HOPEFULLY coming after DHS and AK become full size parks. So I got to thinking, and this is FAN-ART, part rumor part sensical predictions (?), but here's what I was thinking:

View attachment 158045

The design did its best to use existing track and roads to avoid having to develop swampland which could add to the cost. I also thought a little more should go into EPCOT so that the future begins upon parking (A futuristic parking pod near where the buses pickup could pick parking issues, maybe a connector to International Gateway?) and several lines could be seen joining towards Spaceship Earth as cars approach the parking. Also, the parking trams go into woods before re-emerging at the entrance. Walt was big on anticipation from the moment you arrived on the property and I tried to tap into that. It also bugs me all the existing parking at the TTC being so close to the lakes, even with the trees its a giant cement eyesore so I wish they would pull those back a little, make room for a few more resorts or even a fifth theme park (eventually, it IS already on there Master Plan in that area East of the current TTC). The park would then mirrors the MK on the opposite side of Bay Lake. What I envisioned though, was a "Walt Disney World Hotel" around that spot the way DL Has the Disneyland Hotel. and the next theme park south or southeast of it on the land north of EPCOT... This hotel would be the only able to link to any resort directly from the hotel lobby. All Premium/Moderate Resorts are linked in and I definitely think Disney would want Disney Springs to be on there somehow. I think an investment in an infrastructure of this scale, along with a Disney World Hotel and a new investment into EPCOT--A Sweden with a Matterhorn would be a start, (I'm nervous about a Guardians of the Galaxy anything in there I really hope they fit in some actual science and technology, a Tron coaster would be better in my opinion)... Animal Kingdom and DHS will both be full parks by then and be giving EPCOT a real run for its money...

WHAT DO YOU THINK!?!?

How do you propose they fund this Billion dollar endeavor?
