I am getting ready to go on my trip [as you can see :) ] We are going to EPCOT for the first time and I want to ride Mission Space, but I am a little hesitant becuase of the motion sickness/ intensity factor. I ride all other rides with no problem. All you experts, please advise!

THANKS!!!!

[I am sure there is another thread about this, but did not feel like looking through the hundreds of pages with MS listed, sorry]

Hey Sammie,
Some people are effected by the ride, some are not. I consider myself to be somewhat tolerant of motion. I can handle one ride on the Tea Cups, if you know what I mean. My experience on M:S was, I felt fine at first but felt the ride lasted to long, as I started feeling a little queezy. After the ride I felt ok but about an hour later, I felt a bit queezy again. It eventually went away. :)

My advice is...
If you can handle motion rides and you really want to ride M:S, do it... It is a very unique ride and feeling. If you worry that motion sickness will ruin your experience, maybe save it for late in the day so the rest of your day is not wasted if you do get sick. I think you'll be fine. Plus, you'll kick yourself when you get home if you didn't at least try it.... :D

Have fun... :sohappy:

I was there in November 2004 and rode Mission: Space twice. My advice is to follow the directions they give you to the letter. Keep you eyes straight ahead of you on the monitor and don't look away and don't close your eyes. This will help keep the motion sickness at bay. Also as someone who suffers from debilitating migraines, I was completely fine on the ride. No headaches for me. Just remember to keep your eyes up and forward at all times and you'll be fine

This is one of the best ides that Disney has come up with to date!! You have to try it! I am not crasy about spinning rides and was alittle nervous at first. But if you follow the above tips you will be fine. Just watch the monitor and try to relax and get into the ride.

One tip. If you happen to suffer from allergies or sinus problems like when you fly..or have a slight cold and are conjested, I recomend to take some sudafed or other decongestent prior to your ride. The G-force will increase the sinus presure if you have aliitle congestion.

Other than that it is fine. DO NOT let the safety tapes Scare you away. It really is not that bad. Just sit back relax and pretentd you are Jim Loval.

Have fun!!!

I usually get motion sickness, but had no problems with it on Mission Space, even after multiple rides on it. Do as others said and follow the instructions about looking straight ahead and not closing your eyes. The tip about sinus congestion is a good one, too.

Don't lean foward. Don't look from side to side. Just keep focused on the screen without closing your eyes (when you close your eyes your body is no longer tricked into thinking its moving upward as shown on the screen. Thats when people get sick. Don't worry too much and HAVE FUN!!

I would also suggest not worrying about fulfilling your job assignment on the mission as that might divert your eyes from the screen.

OK, I hate to be the wet blanket but I didn't like Mission Space at all. I followed all the good reccomendations here when I rode last Christmas. I rode late at night in case I got sick from it, kept my eyes on the screen the ENTIRE time, NEVER closed my eyes, did it all. I felt OK after riding it (though a bit on the queasy side). By the time I got back to Port Orleans I was so queasy and sick that I skipped Christmas Eve dinner, something I planned for months.

Next morning I woke up feeling not quite so queasy but instead I felt dizzy. Well, the dizzy feeling remained for the rest of my trip and actually got worse. The best way to explain it is that when I closed my eyes I would lose my balance and fall to one side as if I were spinning.

When I got home it got so bad I couldn't even drive because I was always dizzy. Had to go to an ear, nose, and throat specialist who put me on steroids to overcome the problem. He said it was definately Mission Space that caused it because I must have some inner ear/motion sensitivity. The diagnosis was Labrynthitis which is basically a problem with the part of your ear that controls balance. The Doc said that part of the ear has fluid which helps you keep your balance and if you spin around violently (as in Mission Space) the fluid can be disturbed and you can lose your balance for days, weeks, or even months! For me it lasted about 3-4 weeks and it was awfull.

Now, obviously plenty of people ride it and are OK but if you have ANY sensitivity to montion I strongly suggest against it. I'll be honest with you, it isn't that good and believe me, I am a space nut so anything space themed, I am there! It's such a short ride to risk feeling ill.

I understand the curiosity. Before we went I researched it to death and even though I was scared, I felt well prepared to deal with the ride. I went against my better judgement and big mistake! Never again! If you ask me, IMHO, Space Mission doesn't belong in Disney, it is not a Disney ride, more like a Universal ride for thrill seekers.

Just my 2 cents! Good luck no matter what you do and do have fun on your trip!

Motion sickness is a broad term. Spinning is the key, it seems to me. If you can handle spinning, you can handle Mission Space. If the Tea Cups make you nauseous (like they do my husband,) avoid Mission Space. If you can spin around or ride the Tea Cups with minimum ill-effect, then go for it. It is an awesome experience--unlike anything you'll every do.

You are right, it is the spinning (not just motion in general) you have to worry about it. I do wish I could have enjoyed it but oh well.:(

That's exactly what I was going to say. My Love can ride any crazy coaster in the world and not get sick. But anything that spins makes him badly ill. (He doesn't even like Dumbo and stuff for that reason.)

If you don't like/get sick from spinning, you might want to pass. (Or do it last thing of the day so it doesn't ruin the day for you.) Love got physically ill from it and was sick all day. That was no fun. I got a little queasy but it passed.

Also if you have inner ear/balance problems I'd say pass on it too. Beyond that, I think it's worth trying once because it's really unique. (I only rode it the one time because while cool, I don't like that it made me a little dizzy but I am glad I did it once.)

The ride is a great illusion, and because of that, it is great. When you "mess" with the illusion aspect (looking to the side, closing eyes, etc) thats when the ride gets unpleasant.

As with all rides and me, it is all about intensity over time. This is a long ride, and fairly intense, so there is a cumulative factor. That said, it is such an amazing illusion that it deserves a try if you are physically up to it. It really is magic, and I think Walt would be proud of this one.

I hate spinning rides. They make me sick :hurl: However I knew I had to experience the ride at least once. I went on it, felt sick but I did it. Its like putting your toungue on a 9volt battery as a kid. :lookaroun You knew it was going to hurt but you did it anyway. Give it a shot.

That ride is on the borderline of what I can tolerate. So each time i try it, it may be my last.

Same here......I just don't think about the spinning, I'm not spinning I'm going to MARS!...spinning, spinning, :hurl:

They should have free Ginger root to chew on in the Q :lookaroun

Our whole family really enjoys the experience.
There has been so much said about this ride and the warnings are so strong, that there is rarely much of a line, particularly in the afternoons, single rider or even standby are no more than 15-30 min.

I say relax, immerse yourself in the storyline and enjoy your trip...it is a great experience.
