Merida's New Look

This is my first thread so bear with me if I made a community faux pas somewhere. Also if this has already been discussed just disregard me all together ;)

Everyone was excited for the newest Disney princess to have her official coronation... That is until the new 2D look made its first appearance. I personally loved the look but I saw that many people were quite upset about it, going so far as to petition its removal. I read through many different opinions and the gist of the complaints are that she looks too sexual and that Merida would never be caught dead in such a fancy dress. On the first point, she has a slightly (read: SLIGHTLY) smaller waist and smoother hair. She's also wearing a dress that falls further down the shoulder than her 3D version. Being a college student, I can personally attest that she might as well be wearing habit compared to what is currently in fashion right now. Heck, I've seen some Jasmine costumes around Halloween that made even me cringe. I thought the new dress was very tasteful. Which brings us to the second point, I honestly think both dresses look very similar. It's miles better than the tight corset/hair covering combo. If she was going to wear anything to a coronation I would think the new look would be it. I know there is a wide variety of users on this site from parents and grandparents to people who don't have children so I was very curious to see y'all's standpoint. Thoughts, feelings and opinions!

To be honest...I Find it degrading to the other lesser known princesses who haven't had a chance..Come on Disney..Elowny & Kida need to be there too..

She looks too polished! The real Merida looked such a fun, feisty girl. Totally cute in her tomboyish way too.
This new version too much resembles a photoshopped barbie doll.

Come on, not every female cartoon needs to be fit into one exact mold. Merida is to the princesses what Donald is to Mickey - naughtier, slightly mischievous, with a right temper and ultimately far more fun.

I don't really see that much of a difference to get all up in arms about...It's not like they turned her into a Barbie or Bratz doll (I detest both)...c'mon folks it's a cartoon...get over it.

Just wait until Abercrombie and Fitch get done with her....she will be an anorexic waif with low self esteem in no time!

I have to agree with the petition-ers. Merida was praised for being a "real" girl - not a sexualized 16 year-old, with a gravity-defying waist and bosom. It was refreshing to see Disney jump off the bandwagon, and very disappointing to see them jump back on.

It was Pixar who made the movie, but Disney who markets it.
