I was there last week- for 9 days total... I was picked once for extra screening. I had a small bag with me and a stroller... I swear that they bag search here is much more secure than the airport based on what I witnessed last week. Very nice officers, but I think they were searching for lint in every bag. They were checked that thoroughly...which made the lines move very slowly.

Whenever I approach bag check I always watch whats going on at the tables. There are always one or two security people who are overly thorough, taking lots of time checking every pocket, every crevice, have to know what everything is. Then there are usually a couple who make a quick scan of things, quick pat, looks O.K. and passes guests through. Thats my line.

I never had the particular issue noted in this thread. However, I do agree with others that the policy is flawed since a lot of things can be brought in a pocket. I don't mind the metal detector stuff that much. I'd rather be safe and it's still pretty simple to get through. Even the bag check wasn't so bad last time I went (had a camera backpack filled with lenses and stuff, the security guards were appreciative that I had a well organized bag, they didn't have to do much searching through it, each lens had its own compartment, but then I quickly got tired of walking around with so much weight on my back).

The lines at the front of the MK are very poorly arranged for a company that used to pride itself on efficient crowd control.
AND The while the Security is basically all theater, it is a legal defense, if somehow, an individual or group goes on a killing spree, there is the "well we had security measures in place" defense.

Why, so those highly trained professionals can save themselves by firing into a crowd. No thanks, I'll take my chances. If they are off duty, they are off duty? I used to drive a bus, but, I didn't take it to WDW with me since I wasn't going to be required to drive it. The only reason, in my mind, for them to be packing in a theme park is to maintain some ridiculously high level of testosterone. Leave the machismo at home and be a kid again in a fun park.

ETA: I mean, seriously, you think cops aren't trained to handle problems in crowded areas? What do you think the on duty deputies at the main gate are going to do? Just shoot into the crowd?

Goof, when I wasn't married, I carried in the parks all the time. My testosterone remained at a very low level. It was a little bit of a PITA, but should there have been the threat of immediate loss of life, I would have been able to do something. As for the drunkies, shoplifters, and other overall riffraff, I would just be a good witness.
Unfortunately, a bus cannot be compared to a firearm. I'm required by federal law to carry at all times. There are exceptions, i.e. The beach, swimming, etc. I've stopped carrying, but believe me, it wasn't a testosterone thing. If an off duty officer needs to draw down on somebody at Disney World, the merde has hit the ventilateur.

Personally, I would actually feel safer with off-duty LEOs having concealed weapons in the parks. Just recently, there was an incident at a local mall (in MA). The suspect ended up running into a restaurant in the mall, grabbed a knife, and stabbed a waitress and a patron. The only reason it stopped there was because an off-duty officer was also dining and was able to stop the suspect with the use of his service weapon.

I am a supporter of the 2nd amendment. I believe we should be able to own guns and I strongly think that is what has prevented this country from being ground attacked since the English decided to stay home and sip tea.
That said, however, I also strongly think that carrying a weapon in a place like a Disney theme park represents something else and is not OK, in anyway, manner, shape or form. It is, if nothing else a vigilante posture, when you decide to be the enforcer instead of allowing other people to take care of that. It is also foolish to twist what I said into a scenario that some one other then a nut case would fire randomly in a crowd, but, the one thing that people never seem to think about is that bullets that are shot over someones head are still influenced by gravity and will eventually, within seconds, drop to crowd levels if it doesn't hit it's intended target.
The bus rebuttal is proof that you do not understand this issue. No, I made that comparison as a reaction to the "off-duty" law enforcement people not able to bring a weapon in to a place filled with children simply because one is ready to mow the bad guy down at all costs. They, like I was with the bus, were off duty. I wouldn't feel the need to be an enforcer 24/7. I suspect that the guy that accidentally left his gun on a ride seat felt that his having a gun with him wasn't a danger to anyone except a bad guy. Fortunately, no one was hurt in that incident, however, it very easily could have been absolutely terrible. Wanna know how to avoid all that possibility? Do not allow guns in to begin with. Go to Disney to have a good time, not to do ones best Rambo impersonation. Leave that to the people already onsite being paid to do that job. All you will do is get in the way of that mission.
I had the same experience on our last trip. I would purposely not take any bag so we could avoid the bag lines, then like clockwork we would get the random crap... My final method was to do what a terrorist would do to get in, I would hold back just going through the no bag area, wait until the security was getting some other poor schmuck with the random check and then quickly move in and go to the opposite direction that they were taking the schmuck. That worked like a charm, sadly I only developed that skill the last 2 days of the trip, but feel free to use it in the future unless of course you really are a terrorist.
You have to look ahead if you use the bag lines, you can usually tell which people are the resident Barney Fifes looking for lint and which realize it is all just a show for the customer... move to the lines with the show guard that only glance and go, but also don't get behind the nut jobs that are using a stroller as a moving van and have brought the entire contents of their babies room to the park.
