so im not going to rant or debate the bag check or other security measures. however it has come to my attention as of experiencing it on sunday that if your smart and bring no bag it is currently near inpossible to get to the no bag gate that is in center of both right and left bag check stations. the angle of the lines essentialy creates a triangle of people waiting thus forcing your smart self to fight through the lines to get to the no bag gate. THEY REALLY NEED to set up proper ques for the bag check. the funnel of doom is getting old.

I was actually gonna start a thread after our most recent trip called "You've been randomly selected..." and rant about the new metal detector policy. It's really annoying to me and seemed like I got picked for it almost every single time over an 8 day period. I finally told my wife I guess there's just something kinda fishy about a short 34 year old man in a Ducktales shirt that must give you pause. LOL!

I was selected too and I'm a 5'0" 24 year old female! I think it's partly if there is no one else around and if they have some sort of system and count in place of how to select guests. Either way, it didn't impact my trip at all and the security guards were as nice as could be.

They definitely are SUPER nice. It just got annoying after happening over and over and I realize that it was a different guard every time and they didn't know if I had ever been selected or not. We pretty much always have dinner reservations or breakfast reservations every day and it's just lame getting pulled out when you have a place to be. They did tell me though that it's coming to where literally every single person is going through the metal detectors and it's still in basically a "trial period" at this point.

We didn't have any issues when we were there last August

They should also add more security to the no bag entrance as I could have anything in my pockets which they do not check which makes the whole bag check thing pointless.
Can you imagine how long the lines would be if everyone was patted down like airport security ?

Surely its peace of mind ?

Nice to hear

Everyone has a place to be - breakfast, dinner, Fast Pass, just getting in the park. It's reassuring knowing that Disney has some security checks in place, no matter how random or how much they impact on the guest

My thing is this. If someone wants to go crazy and start killing people if they aren't able to get their gun in to the park they will just do it outside of the park and what more of a soft target than a bunch of sitting ducks waiting to have all their bags checked or to go through a metal detector? I'm definitely glad that Disney wants to try and have good security but there's only so much you can do. I will say that I talked to a couple of CMs about the effectiveness of the metal detectors and they said they have seen pretty much everything you can think of in people's pockets and purses. They said if someone brings their gun it's an automatic trip to jail because they are forbidden in the parks and that's even if you have your concealed carry permit. I didn't even think to ask them if you aren't allowed to bring your gun with you to even keep it in your hotel or not? Does anyone know the policy on that? I actually don't carry a gun but am just curious about that. I would assume it's a property wide thing.

um no.....its all poinless dont you get it? its all just theater. could just blow yourself up waiting in the line for example. besides TSA fails tests daily and they do a better job yeah? i hate how everyone thinks security matters.

peace of mind? how would a worthless security measure thats easy to bypass peace of mind? and airport security fails random tests all the time. the FBI gets fake bombs on planes allllooot.

stop deraing guys this post is not about theater security its about the way lines are set up at MK preventing no bag persons from getting to gate without a mosh mentality.

Not sure about that. If you have a permit then there is no law broken. Disney policy carries no legal weight. They can certainly ask you to leave their property if you violate their rules. Should the permit holder decline to leave then you get into a trespassing scenario that might result in an arrest.

The problem with the blanket ban by Disney is that it includes off duty law enforcement. The highly trained guys that probably should be armed while on vacation at a one of the largest terrorist targets in the country.

ETA: Are there any Florida law enforcement officers that could give us their thoughts on being arrested if trying to gain entry to the park?

I was picked twice in one day ...once at MK in the morn and then again later that night over at HS. I found it odd that they picked my daughter...she was 15 at the time, but I guess appeared to be older since she was alone...I went thru the no bag line and she went thru the bag line by herself..do they pick kids sometimes?

It was actually a cop at the MK that told me if people bring a gun they automatically "take a ride". I don't really know how it works either based on what you said.

I've seen them pick children to walk through as well as elderly visitors. I've noticed strollers sometimes go through with little attention paid to them. I think everyone, carrying a bag or not, should walk through a scanner.

are you a nazi.....sounds like a nazi ...safer safer safer.....

reason strollers children and elderly often get let through is likely law suit bad PR based.

but really i hope your world vision isnt on the horizon....robots monitoring everyone at any time everyone scanned upon entry into every facility you can imagine. random road blocks to do searches and so on and so fourth. because while on paper it sounds goor to try and catch terrorists (stutter) what happens when wearing a red shirt becomes against the law and you allowed all those systems to be put in place thinking it was for terrorism but you forgot that tommorow your way of life could be made ilegal.

my educated guess is that beyond disney policy....possible ban ect you are likely removed with the police but i highly doubt any jail time or any real hiccups as long as you politely follow instructions.

He said there were tons of registered felons that get busted with their guns there too and they get in a lot of trouble. A CM told me you ARE allowed to bring a knife but it has to be less than 3 inches.

Well a felon is excluded from gun possession due to federal law, so yeah, I would expect them to "take a ride" if caught.

Your comment about pocket knives has been confirmed. I actually contacted Customer Service and posted the answer in another thread which I will blatantly copy to save myself time:

An update for this thread: Due to the different answers I was finding on the various discussion forums, I sent an email to Disney World's customer service (guest.mail@wdw.disneyonline.com) asking about the policy for pocket knives now that the metal detectors were installed. This past Friday (4/15/16) I received a call from Vicki at Walt Disney World customer service. She said that she was forwarded my email and had contacted the security department directly to get me an answer. The official response from Walt Disney World Security is that small folding pocket knives with a blade length of 3 inches or less are allowable under Disney World policy. Of course this does not change the official "no weapons" policy Disney World has in place, but small folding pocket knives with a blade length of 3 inches or less are not considered weapons by Disney World Security.

I did not ask about any other parks so I would not consider this information to be relevant to those parks, just Disney World.

A previous poster mentioned a security guard using his ID badge to measure a blade, I am guessing the ID badge is around 3 inches long and makes the policy easy to enforce without the need for a ruler. So there you have it, I was impressed Vicki took the time to call rather than respond with some vague email. Hope this helps anyone else with the same question.
