M:S worth the destruction of Horizons?

I'm not mad at you, Disneyfan. Many of us have looked at different angles, but we just stick to what we love. We're different, that's all. As far as happy memories, I've ridden the attraction 3 times, but I can't really put on the spot any "family experiences" - i.e. Horizons, pointing out all those details, humming along, getting dizzy at the DNA chain, choosing, desert, undersea, etc. Mission Space is just not as loveable - that's my argument. Same goes for Test Track. I rode it once - and hated it. I rode it again because I felt bad - I hated it more. You just can't like an attraction if you don't like it.

Back to more important business, the reason I told you to watch out is because people can misinterpret what you mean. When you say, "What is wrong with you?!" that implies "My idea is better than yours" and that's an insult. I see where you're coming from, but remember, on the forums, all we can do is read and interpret ourselves - - so just be careful so you don't insult anyone.

The topic is of no consequence

If I remember correctly, Horizons was falling apart. Anyone else remember all the photos and press releases of the building physically breaking in half.

Look for some old news headlines -- I'm pretty certain it was on a sink whole of some sort (let's face it, swamps were never meant to support heavy attractions).

Perhaps Disney could have fixed it, but I think it was a situation that called for a total overhaul a la Mission Space.

Now, word about maybe destroying the original Space Mountain for an update or changes of that sort.... that hurts. They should simply have the original and perhaps another new ride. Why get rid of rides that aren't old and pathetic (but let's face it, some are) for new rides.

I guess the only conclusion is that someone will always be upset. Someone will always write letters of complaint. They have to do what they see as being the best for everyone.

You saw Horizons breaking because they threw a deconstruction ball through the building. Disney destroyed it. . . it did NOT fall apart on its own.

You said there were press releases? I'd love to see that. . .

That being said, the following information is from this site. As my original posting said, I thought I remembered reading about the sinkholes somewhere.

From this site:

The primary reason to do away with the ride system and gut the building was to correct problems with building failure and reinforce and correct these problems, then install a new attraction that does not place as much stress that the old ride did. News that is leaking around the cast members is that just this past week, Disney has had some serious setbacks discovering that the building is in fact in worst shape then previously thought, they pulled the Imagineers out of the building and cancelled the cast member preview/walkthroughs because the company fears for their safety! Disney is aggressively attempting to save the building, although there is a appearing to be a strong possibility that they will have no choice but to tear the building down and start over again.

There you have it, Horizons was actually closed out of concern for the safety of the guests, had Disney been ready to replace it with a new attraction, work would have begun quickly (like when World of Motion closed), Horizons stayed closed 9 months ready to run again at a moments notice because Disney didn't even have a clue as to what to do with the Horizons situation, repair, rehab/repair or teardown and replace, one thing they didn't want to get out was that they built a building that is in fact almost ready to collapse under its own weight after 16 years. One backroom rumor is that a Florida sinkhole formed under the building's foundation at some time in 1998 or some type of soil subsidence situation caused the problem.

I never accused anyone on this board. If you read my posts, you'll see I was writing on how it may be perceived. . .it was never my attention to accuse or attack.

Guys the whole "Reason Why Horizons Was Shut Down" discussion took place a long time ago. Anyone in here remember that huge thread on the sink hole theory. I bet there were a lot of people kicked of because of the things they said in that thread. Anyway I am of the belief that the reason was because the building was not in good shape. I believe this because it did seem as though they made an attempt to save the building but in the end could not. I fought Rob on this subject a little bit and I have come to believe that he was right. The sink hole thing is the most logical explanation. Now I am sure there is something about it that I left out. So please someone feel free to add your thoughts.

I agree whole heartedly. One of the main reasons I support that theory is simply, why would Disney have behaved otherwise?

Why would they tear down a popular attraction and spend $100 million on a new one if they didn't think that was

a) what people would most enjoy?
b) what made the most business sense?
c) what was most feasible for the circumstances?

Even when people have become less than happy with some Disney decision, Disney would never try and make people upset.

I think that Mission:Space was a good replacemnt for Horizons. Horizons was a very good ride but it really did not attract the amount of people that Mission:Space has/is going to attract As far as the quality of Horizons it had outdated animotronics and some unimpressive sets. Horizons was not on par with similar attractions that use that ride system (The Hauted Mansion.) For this generation Horizons was a boring ride that really didn't inspire us, Mission:Space combines thrills with good themeing and provides inspiration for theme park visitors. While i was on Mission:Space i forgot i was on a ride and really thought that i was in a different place.

NO!

Epcot's the best WDW park. It always has been. It's still the best park. But it's only half as good as it used to be without Horizons. I won't go into how badly I think of M:S, as I'd probably be shot down, but I will say that that area of Epcot is now dead to me, Along with the area just to the right of it. Also, I really don't think that M:S will be NEARLY as popular in five years, and be barely popular at all in ten, while Horizons still has many fanboys (such as myself,) and it first opened twenty years ago. M:S and TT? I think I'll pass, thank you. Horizons and WoM? OH, YEAH! FW should be demolished and started over again...the way that it was. The way that it always should be.

Horizons=Best attraction ever.
M:S=...Well...It's building is okay.

I mean, do a search, and as for the one true answer, everyone will have their own opinons. I mean, some would rather have Horizons, even if it's not open, just sitting there, because it might just reopen, while I'd rather have a ride there that'll be open and people will ride, but oh well...
