So, in the stillness of the night i've not much better to do than to contemplate the much spoken-of plot of land which sits barred from prying eyes along the eastern half of future world...
I guess its best to start at the beginning.. the past.. Horizons.
With hindsight being 20/20, I can honestly say I don't believe Horizons would be a well thought of attraction in the modern Future World array. The time period of the "future" which the attraction was emulating has actually come about - and is nothing like the world we dreamed of. So, theorheticly, the attraction would of had to change for those reasons. It would become Century 4 perhaps or something similar, those alterations wouldn't of been too noticeable and then of course they would of updated the Omnisphere theater movies and a few smaller items. What about the score? Disney seems to have taken a "no more silly songs" stance toward such compositions and especially when they relate to topics dealing with technology and the future. For example, Buzz Lightyear zapped "If you had Wings," Test Track ran down "It's fun to be Free" and Ellen turned out the lights on "Energy, you make the world go 'round."
Even the "new" Spaceship Earth no longer has "Tomarrow's Child" and The Land is void of "Listen to the Land."
So, hypotheticly speaking, Horizons was the last outpost of the "song" and by our rules of cohesion within a theme.. it had to go.
Yes, I think that's what it came down to. Aside from the out-dated scenes and rumored issues with the building itself, Horizons was snuffed out because it had a song.
The song was Horizons and Horizons was nothing without the song.
So, now the music is gone. There is no more song. There is simply SPACE.
What will SPACE be? Space is silent is it not...? The perfect way to kill a song I suppose.
Having been inside the building and seen the future which lays just over the horizon for the rest of you.. I think you wont be dissapointed. It's there, it has something, that something I think is potential. It may well be the savior of the ground it has layed its foundation upon. It may actually be as good as it's supposed to be. But, I don't think there will be a song...
So perhaps it wont have heart? But was that space ever meant to be the heart? Shouldn't the heart have been Spaceship Earth all along? In the center, unavoidable, seeing over all? The "new" Spaceship Earth does appear to have taken on the burden of beeing an emotional center. It is no longer showing Spacecraft and Space stations.. those are gone, gone to SPACE it appears. And the warmth that Horizons once had? The infatuation with the "family unit?" It seems to have made itself a home within Spaceship Earth, the "new" narration full references to humanity as a family, a singular unit.
So, then, perhaps Disney knows what they're doing. Lets hope so.
