Looking back on Horizons and forward to SPACE

So, in the stillness of the night i've not much better to do than to contemplate the much spoken-of plot of land which sits barred from prying eyes along the eastern half of future world...

I guess its best to start at the beginning.. the past.. Horizons.

With hindsight being 20/20, I can honestly say I don't believe Horizons would be a well thought of attraction in the modern Future World array. The time period of the "future" which the attraction was emulating has actually come about - and is nothing like the world we dreamed of. So, theorheticly, the attraction would of had to change for those reasons. It would become Century 4 perhaps or something similar, those alterations wouldn't of been too noticeable and then of course they would of updated the Omnisphere theater movies and a few smaller items. What about the score? Disney seems to have taken a "no more silly songs" stance toward such compositions and especially when they relate to topics dealing with technology and the future. For example, Buzz Lightyear zapped "If you had Wings," Test Track ran down "It's fun to be Free" and Ellen turned out the lights on "Energy, you make the world go 'round."

Even the "new" Spaceship Earth no longer has "Tomarrow's Child" and The Land is void of "Listen to the Land."

So, hypotheticly speaking, Horizons was the last outpost of the "song" and by our rules of cohesion within a theme.. it had to go.

Yes, I think that's what it came down to. Aside from the out-dated scenes and rumored issues with the building itself, Horizons was snuffed out because it had a song.

The song was Horizons and Horizons was nothing without the song.

So, now the music is gone. There is no more song. There is simply SPACE.

What will SPACE be? Space is silent is it not...? The perfect way to kill a song I suppose.

Having been inside the building and seen the future which lays just over the horizon for the rest of you.. I think you wont be dissapointed. It's there, it has something, that something I think is potential. It may well be the savior of the ground it has layed its foundation upon. It may actually be as good as it's supposed to be. But, I don't think there will be a song...

So perhaps it wont have heart? But was that space ever meant to be the heart? Shouldn't the heart have been Spaceship Earth all along? In the center, unavoidable, seeing over all? The "new" Spaceship Earth does appear to have taken on the burden of beeing an emotional center. It is no longer showing Spacecraft and Space stations.. those are gone, gone to SPACE it appears. And the warmth that Horizons once had? The infatuation with the "family unit?" It seems to have made itself a home within Spaceship Earth, the "new" narration full references to humanity as a family, a singular unit.

So, then, perhaps Disney knows what they're doing. Lets hope so.

Thats pretty deep and meaningful thinking Rob. I never experienced Horizons but like everyone else I am looking forward to the opening of Mission:Space.
"Today is yesterdays tomorrow", "tomorrow never comes"

I've never seen horizons but to me at least Spaceship Earth has always felt like the center, like it should be. That is one of the most calming, interesting rides in Epcot (which is my favorite part).

I think what you say makes plenty of sense and is a very interesting theory :).

Even though it has been along time since i have been on Horizons, I still remember parts of it. And in general, Rob hit on a point with the music aspect. Each pavillion had such a catchy song that got stuck in your head at some point. I believe the song/music of an attraction adds so much to its dimension. I mean, how can you have splash mountain without laughing place?? Or Pirates of the Caribbean without yo-ho a pirate's life for me?? Epcot of the 80s had such a feel about it that I miss so much. I guess that feel is impossible today, but thinking back, I wish Epcot still remained much like that today. Hopefully, Epcot will return to it's former glory. Spaceship Earth is my favorite Epcot attraction mostly , i think, because it is one of the remaining original attractions at Epcot. Sure, there have been some changes(Tomorrow's Child should never have been removed), but it has remained amidst the changes of Epcot. Let's hope SPACE is as good as it looks like it will be.

I agree that alot of people miss the old Epcot songs that really gave it an 80's feel (to me personally there is nothing better than a 1980's Future World. I still love it :animwink: ) And even though I love all of the changes that have been made to FW (Test Track, Ellen's UoE makeover, JII, etc...) I really miss the old songs. But at least Disney is seeing that maybe they songs need to come back. When Journey Into Imagination closed it was replaced with a ride missing "One Little Spark" (the ride's signature song). And while I still enjoyed the new attraction, most people didnt so it was changed. The replacement was more of a return to the original Epcot ways. It was lighter in tone and brought back "One Little Spark" (even though in an alterd form). Even though it was only one attraction, maybe other attractions will either bring back their old music or get new songs. It would be so easy to bring back "Listen to the Land" and/or "Tomorrow's Child" (even though I do love the music at the end of the present day Spaceship Earth). So maybe the awesome "retro" Epcot merchandise available in the Mouse Gears shop could be a sign of things to come (wishful thinking but it never hurts to dream :animwink: ).

Speaking of Horizons, what were the problems mentioned as far as the structural integrety of the building? I remember some discussions in the past, but I don't remember the details. So the building was going to collapse or something if they didn't tear it down?
They managed to make lasting ride buildings for half a century, but that one they screwed up? Help me to remember. The last time I rode Horizons was in '94, so it's fairly vivid in my memory. Best. Ride. Ever.

Nothing beats the old Horizons music! WOW!!! The best parts were SPACE and the moment in the Omnisphere theatre with the silicon chips and stuff like that. I'd actually heard some rumors that Misson: SPACE was going to use some of the old Horizon's score? Anyone?

I've noticed that they still use lyrics from the Horizons theme song... "If you can dream it, then you can do it!.." I've heard "Space" other places than on Horizons, also.. probably around the park

They've made several inferior buildings, thats just the first one the decided was too costly to fix.

Great post Rob ! As for me i saw Horizons last in 1998 and remember everything about it and the thing that kind of annoys me is that it would be great if we could of kept Horizons and then they can have their "space simulator" if "THEY " want as well, i mean that i love the kind of rides like Spaceship Earth, the Dinosaur ride, Imagination, and now there's another one to go ! I hope Epcot still stays a little bit nostalgic , i am 38 years old but i do not personally enjoy or am able to go on those jerky throw up experiences like those rollercoasters, and yes before anybody blasts me i like Dinosaur at AK , all the Splash's at MK and Test Track as well, i just do not want to see Epcot's future world becoming another regular amusement park ! :( ok, now everybody can blast !:animwink:

You would have loved Horizons. :)
It was one of the old school ride akin to SE, a descendant of the great 'slow observation' lengthy rides. This was in the days before 'entertainment' meant plunging, fast acceleration and cheezy rock music.

World of Motion was also one of the old 'boring' rides (which was great). At any rate, SE is the only ride of that kind left that hasn't been gutted and redesigned.

Hey, look on the bright side! We still have El Rio Del Tiempo!

Honestly, though, I think Rio was always one of the best examples of EPCOT progressive themed music. The first few minutes are really quite ingenious because they force you to realize just how many different styles of native Mexican music there are, and create an interesting and slightly forboding atmosphere for the first few scenes. And then, of course, who can forget the incessant mariachi finale?

Now that I think about it Spaceship Earth still has a nice array of themed music to it, although all of it is instrumental and there is no prevailant theme in the music. That's what made World of Motion so exciting from a musical standpoint: It was a textbook of world music history that only played one song. The Assyrian/Egyptian version really took the cake and is still probably THE most obscure piece of WDW music ever.

I just had a vision... maybe they'll play "Space" in the que or something in "Mission: SPACE"! Can anyone else see what I mean... most other rides that took over other rides somehow remind us what was there before.. ie: the pic of mr toad and owl in "Winnie the Pooh," the screen in the first Alien Encounter preshow... "Mission to Mars: Fact or Fiction," etc...

Don't forget about Dean Finder at Imagination. They will probably put some kind of inside joke in there. Somthing that shows the presence of the former ride.

The Imagineers really love to put hidden refrences to the classic rides they replace (It will be interesting to see what they will do for Pooh replacing CBJ in Disneyland....mabey Big Al giving the deed to Owl?). In music form or in some hidden prop around the pavillion, I am sure we will find a nice homage to Horizons in SPACE.

I really do miss the songs of Future World. When the songs were there, the attractions had so much more meaning. I still think one of the old Energy themes could be stuck in UoE somewhere.

I think it would be cool to add Autopia to the Test Track pavillion. If they ever did that (you never know...its kinda popular at DL), they should put "Fun to be Free" in there. They brought back One Little Spark, so you never know!

If you listen to the background music around Future World, I think you can hear some old theme songs once in a while. I remember still hearing One Little Spark even after JII had been closed.
